The SMAC (Simplified Marker And Cell) algorithm is extended for an application to thermal non-equilibrium two-phase flows in light water nuclear reactors (LWRs). A two-fluid three-field model is adopted and a multi-dimensional unstructured grid is used for complicated geometries. The phase change and the time derivative terms appearing in the continuity equations are implemented implicitly in a pressure correction equation. The energy equations are decoupled from the momentum equations for faster convergence. The verification of the present numerical method was carried out against a set of test problems which includes the single and the two-phase flows. The results are also compared to those of the semi-implicit ICE method, where the energy equations are coupled with the momentum equation for pressure correction.
A Navier-Stokes code has been developed to simulate the flow through a cross flow fan. It is based on an unstructured finite volume method and uses moving grid technique to model the rotation of the fan. A low Reynolds number turbulence model is used to calculate eddy viscosity. The basic algorithm is SIMPLE. Numerical simulations over a wide range of flow rate aye carried out to validate the code. Comparison of all numerical solutions with experimental data confirms the validity of the present code. Present numerical solutions show a noticeable improvement over a previous numerical method which is based on a model of body force to simulate the rotation of the impeller.
The three-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations have been solved by a node-centered finite volume method with unstructured hybrid grids. The pressure-velocity coupling is handled by the artificial compressibility algorithm and convective fluxes are obtained by Roe's flux difference splitting scheme with linear reconstruction of the solutions. Euler implicit method with Jacobi matrix solver is used for the time-integration. The viscous terms are discretised in a manner to handle any kind of grids such as tetragedra, prisms, pyramids, hexahedra, or mixed-element grid. Inviscid bump flow is solved to check the accuracy of high order convective flux discretisation. And viscous flows around a circular cylinder and a sphere are studied to show the efficiency and accuracy of the solver.
In this report, We compared the actual test with the result of pow calculation and Resistance/Self-propulsion of the ship using STAR-CCM+ which is the commercial Reynolds Averaged Navier-Strokes(RANs) Solver. The calculation model was the KRISO Container Ship and 205K Bulk Carrier of Sungdong shipbuilding company. For this calculation, We used Realizable K-Epsilon model for flaw analysis, VOF method for the free surface creation, Moving Reference Frame method for reducing the POW calculation time, and Sliding Mesh method for Self-Propulsion analysis. Calculation of Resistance and Self-Propulsion includes the free-surface. And all calculations in this report were based on unstructured grids.
Rice's monotone streamline upwind finite element method, which was proposed to treat convection-dominated flows, is applied to the linear triangular element. An alignment technique of unstructured grids with given velocity fields is used to prevent the interpolation error produced in evaluating the convection term in the upwind method. The alignment of grids is accomplished by optimizing a target function defined with the inner-product of a properly chosen side vector in the element with the velocity field. Two pure advection problems are considered to demonstrate the superiorities of the present approach in solving the convection-dominated flow on the unstructured grid. Solutions obtained with aligned grids are much closer to the exact solutions than those with initial regular grids. The capability of the present approach in predicting the appearance of the secondary vortex in the laminar confined jet impingement is shown by comparing streamlines to those produced by SIMPLE on a highly stretched grid toward the impingement plate.

A conservative pressure-based finite-volume numerical method has been developed for computing flow and heat transfer by using an unstructured grid system. The method admits arbitrary convex polyhedra. Care is taken in the discretization and solution procedures to avoid formulations that are cell-shape-specific. A collocated variable arrangement formulation is developed, i.e. all dependent variables such as pressure and velocity are stored at cell centers. Gradients required for the evaluation of diffusion fluxes and for second-order-accurate convective operators are found by a novel second-order accurate spatial discretization. Momentum interpolation is used to prevent pressure checkerboarding and the SIMPLE algorithm is used for pressure-velocity coupling. The resulting set of coupled nonlinear algebraic equations is solved by employing a segregated approach, leading to a decoupled set of linear algebraic equations fer each dependent variable, with a sparse diagonally dominant coefficient matrix. These equations are solved by an iterative preconditioned conjugate gradient solver which retains the sparsity of the coefficient matrix, thus achieving a very efficient use of computer resources.

Flow mechanism of contractive and dilative motion is numerically investigated to obtain a propulsive force in highly viscous fluid, which is the simulation of the propulsion in micro-organisms. The computing code for the analysis of complicated motions is developed with cell-centered unstructured grid scheme. The developed code is validated by the well-known problems of cavity flow and oscillating wall. The validated code is applied to the contractive and dilative motion in narrow tube. The computed results are compared with nodal points scheme. By the present results, it is found that propulsive force can be obtained by the contractive and dilative motion through simulation with the developed code.

Computational simulations of turbulent flows around a model ship have been performed to investigate an influence of TVD schemes on the accuracy of advective terms associated with ship resistances. Several TVD schemes including upwind, second-order upwind, vanLeer, and QUICK as well as a nonTVD linear scheme were studied by examining temporal and spatial characteristics of accuracy transition in adjacent cells to the hull. Even though vanLeer scheme was the most accurate among TVD schemes in both structured and unstructured grid systems, the ratio of accuracy switch from 2nd order to 1st order in vanLeer scheme was considerable compared with the 2nd order linear scheme. Also, the accuracy transition was observed to be overally scattered in the unstructured grid while the accuracy transition in the structured grid appeared relatively clustered. It concluded that TVD schemes had to be carefully used in computational simulations of turbulent flows around a model ship due to the loss of accuracy despite its attraction of numerical stability.
An implicit pressure correction method on unstructured Cartesian grid is developed for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. An immersed boundary method is also incorporated to treat the body geometry. Tests show that with an appropriate amount of dissipation, the method is second order accurate both in time and space. The driven cavity flows with and without immersed bodies are computed to demonstrate the capability of the present scheme.
