A GUI based pre/post processor program, which is based on the MFC and OpenGL library in the Windows O/S, hee been developed for NUFLEX Using this program, users are able to generate and modify structured or unstructured grid geometries, set all the parameters for the solver, and observe the results of the simulation in graphic view by vector or scalar plots. The mesh geometry data can be imported from or exported to other programs by supporting functions for reading from and writing to CGNS data format files.
Numerical simulation for the axisymmetric body with contractive and dilative periodic motion is carried out. The present analysis shows that a propulsive force can be obtained in highly viscous fluid by the contractive and dilative motion of axisymmetric body. An axisymmetric code is developed with unstructured grid system for the simulation of complicated motion and geometry. It is validated by comparing with the results of Stokes approximation with the problem of uniform flow past a sphere in low Reynolds number($R_n$ = 1). The validated code is applied to the simulation of contractive and dilative periodic motion of body whose results are quantitatively compared with the two dimensional case. The simulation is extended to the analysis of waving surface with projecting part for finding out the difference of hydrodynamics performance according to variation of waving surface configuration. The present study will be the basic research for the development of the propulsor of an axisymmetric micro-hydro-machine.
In the present study, a three-dimensional least square/level set based two-phase flow code was developed for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems using finite element discretization. The present method can be utilized for the analysis of a free surface flow problem in a complex geometry due to the feature of FEM. Since the finite element method is employed for the spatial discretization of governing equations, an unstructured mesh can be naturally adopted for the level set simulation of a free surface flow without an additional load for the code development except that solution methods of the hyperbolic type redistancing and advection equations of the level set function should be devised in order to give a bounded solution on the unstructured mesh. From the numerical experiments of the present study, it is shown that the proposed method is both robust and accurate for the simulation of three-dimensional sloshing problems.

The inverse radiation analysis of a two-dimensional irregular configuration using unstructured triangular meshes is presented. In this study, an enclosure filled with an absorbing, emitting and scattering medium with diffusely emitting and reflecting opaque boundaries is considered. The finite volume method is applied to solve the radiative transfer equation in order to simulate the measured incident radiation values which are used as input data for the inverse analysis. The conjugate gradient method is adopted for the estimation of wall emissivities by minimizing the objective function at each iteration step. To verify the performance of the unstructured grid system, we compare the results with those using a structured grid system for the two-dimensional lopsided shape. The effect of measurement errors on the estimation accuracy is also investigated.
A mathematical methodology is proposed for designing nozzle hole shapes producing controlled geometric cavitation. The proposed methodology uses an unstructured RANS flow solver, with the ability to compute sensitivity derivatives via an adjoint algorithm. The adjoint formulation for the N-S equations is presented while variation of the turbulence viscosity is not taken into account during the geometry modifications. The sensitivities are calculated in a mode independently of the shape parameterisation. The method is used to develop and evaluate conceptual shapes for nozzle hole cavitation reduction. The localized region at the hole inlet producing cavitation, is parameterised using its radius of curvature, while a cost function is formulated to eliminate the negative pressures present at this location. Sensitivity derivatives are used to assess the dependence of the localized region on the minimum pressure, and to drive the geometry to the targeted shape. The results show that the computer model can provide nozzle hole entry shapes that produce predefined flow characteristics, and thus can be used as an inverse design tool for nozzle hole cavitation control.

In this study a complete 3D surface reconstruction method is proposed based on the concept that the vertices of surface model can be completely matched to the unstructured point cloud. In order to generate the initial mesh model from the point cloud, the mesh subdivision of bounding box and shrink-wrapping algorithm are introduced. The control mesh model for well representing the topology of point cloud is derived from the initial mesh model by using the mesh simplification technique based on the original QEM algorithm, and the parametric surface model for approximately representing the geometry of point cloud is derived by applying the local subdivision surface fitting scheme on the control mesh model. And, to reconstruct the complete matching surface model, the insertion of isolated points on the parametric surface model and the mesh optimization are carried out Especially, the fast 3D surface reconstruction is realized by introducing the voxel-based nearest-point search algorithm, and the simulation results reveal the availability of the proposed surface reconstruction method.
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach is now playing an important role in the engineering process in these days. Generating proper grid system in time for the region of interest is prerequisite for the efficient numerical calculation of flow physics using CFD approach. Grid generation is, however, usually considered as a major obstacle for a routine and successful application of numerical approaches in the engineering process. CFD approach based on the unstructured grid system is gaining popularity due to its simplicity and efficiency for generating grid system compared to the structured grid approaches, especially for complex geometries. In this paper an automated triangular surface grid generation using CAD(Computer Aided Design) surface data is proposed. According to the present method, the CAD surface data imported in the STL(Stereo-lithography) format is processed to identify feature edges defining the topology and geometry of the surface shape first. When the feature edges are identified, node points along the edges are distributed. The initial fronts which connect those feature edge nodes are constructed and then they are advanced along the CAD surface data inward until the surface is fully covered by triangular surface grid cells using Advancing Front Method. It is found that this approach can be implemented in an automated way successfully saving man-hours and reducing human-errors in generating triangular surface grid system.

Flood damage is one of the most important and influential natural disaster which has an effect on human beings. Local concentrated heavy rainfall in urban area yields flood damage increase due to insufficient capacity of drainage system. When the excessive flood occurs in urban area, it yields huge property losses of public facilities involving roadway inundation to paralyze industrial and transportation system of the city. To prevent such flood damages in urban area, it is necessary to develop adequate inundation analysis model which can consider complicated geometry of urban area and artificial drainage system simultaneously. In this study, an urban flood analysis model adopting the unstructured computational grid was developed to simulate the urban flood characteristics such as inundation area, depth and integrated with subsurface drainage network systems. By the result, we can make use of these presented method to find a flood hazard area and to make a flodd evacuation map. The model can also establish flood-mitigation measures as a part of the decision support system for flood control authority.
The coarse mesh finite difference (CMFD) method is applied to the discontinuous finite element method based discrete ordinate calculation for source convergence acceleration. The three-dimensional (3-D) DFEM-Sn code FEDONA is developed for general geometry applications as a framework for the CMFD implementation. Detailed methods for applying the CMFD acceleration are established, such as the method to acquire the coarse mesh flux and current by combining unstructured tetrahedron elements to rectangular coarse mesh geometry, and the alternating calculation method to exchange the updated flux information between the CMFD and DFEM-Sn. The partial current based CMFD (p-CMFD) is also implemented for comparison of the acceleration performance. The modified p-CMFD method is proposed to correct the weakness of the original p-CMFD formulation. The performance of CMFD acceleration is examined first for simple two-dimensional multigroup problems to investigate the effect of the problem and coarse mesh sizes. It is shown that smaller coarse meshes are more effective in the CMFD acceleration and the modified p-CMFD has similar effectiveness as the standard CMFD. The effectiveness of CMFD acceleration is then assessed for three-dimensional benchmark problems such as the IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) and C5G7MOX problems. It is demonstrated that a sufficiently converged solution is obtained within 7 outer iterations which would require 175 iterations with the normal DFEM-Sn calculations for the IAEA problem. It is claimed that the CMFD accelerated DFEM-Sn method can be effectively used in the practical eigenvalue calculations involving general geometries.

Flow and aerodynamic characteristics were analyzed numerically for a commercial passenger airplane, Boeing 747-400, flying in the cruising condition. The model geometry with 100:1 in scale was obtained by the photo scanning measurement with the maximum error of 1.4% comparing with the real airplane dimension. The three-dimensional inviscid steady compressible governing equations were solved by the finite volume method in the unstructured grid system. The convective terms were treated by the Crank-Nicholson and first-order upwind schemes. In the computational results, the strong wing-tip vortices were clearly observed and the pressure contours on the airplane surface were suggested. The lift and drag forces in the wing with engines increase by 1.49% and 3.9%, respectively compared with the case without engines. The aerodynamic forces were estimated quantitatively for each element which consists of the airplane.
