  • In this paper an experimental investigation of characteristics of developing transitional unsteady flows in a square-sectional 180。 curved duct are presented. The experimental study using air is carried out to measure axial velocity profiles secondary flow velocity profiles and entrance length by using Laser Do ppler Velocimeter(LDV) system. The flow development is found to depend upon Dean number dimensionless angular frequency velocity amplitude ration and cur-vature ratio. Of special interest is the secondary flow generated by centrifugal effects in the plane of the cross-section of the duct. The secondary flows are strong and complicate at entrance region. The entrance length of transitional pulsating flow is obtained to 120。 of bended angle of duct in this experimental conditions.

  • High-speed moist air or steam flow has long been of important subject in engineering and industrial applications. Of many complicated gas dynamics problems involved in moist air flows, the most challenging task is to understand the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon when the moist air rapidly expands through a flow device. Many theoretical and experimental studies using supersonic wind tunnels have devoted to the understanding of the nonequilibrium condensation flow physics so far. However, the nonequilibrium condensation can be also generated in the subsonic flows induced by the unsteady expansion waves in shock tube. The major flow physics of the nonequilibrium condensation in this application may be different from those obtained in the supersonic wind tunnels. In the current study, the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon caused by the unsteady expansion waves in a shock tube is analyzed by using the two-dimensional, unsteady, Navier-Stokes equations, which are fully coupled with a droplet growth equation. The third-order TVD MUSCL scheme is applied to solve the governing equation systems. The computational results are compared with the previous experimental data. The time-dependent behavior of nonequilibrium condensation of moist air in shock tube is investigated in details. The results show that the major characteristics of the nonequilibrium condensation phenomenon in shock tube are very different from those in the supersonic wind tunnels.

  • Unsteady flows in a semi-induction system was investigated to verify their characteristics. A semi-induction system was designed and made to verify the Sow characteristics in an intake system. To attain an intact wave of an intake pulse, a single semi-intake system was adopted as a test rig. The system consists of an intake pipe and a rotary valve as a pulse generator, and a variable volume Helmholtz resonator. The variable volume Helmholtz resonator was mounted in the intake pipe to enhance a breathing capacity and engine performance. The phase and amplitude of the pulsating flow in an unsteady flow system were found to affect the charging capacity significantly. The behavior of pressure wave, their phase and amplitude were investigated in various regions. Some of the results obtained from experiments were described.

  • An unstructured hybrid mesh flow solver has been developed for the simulations of three dimensional steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with an artificial compressibility method were discretized by using a node-based finite-volume method. For the unsteady time-accurate computation, a dual-time stepping method was adopted to satisfy a divergence free flow field at each physical time step. The one equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to solve the high-Reynolds number flow fields. This method has been applied to calculate the steady flow fields around submarine configurations and unsteady flow fields around a 3-D infinite cylinder.

  • In the present study, the unsteady in a square-selctional 180.deg. curved duct are experimentally investigated. The experimental study using air in a square-sectional 180.deg. curved duct is carried out to measure axial velocity distributions with data acquisition and processing system. In this system, Rotating Machinery Resolver(RMR) and PHASE Software are used to obtain the results of unsteady flows. In conclusion, the exact measurement of unsteady flow using LDV system depends upon uniformity of metreials, duct thickness, and scattered particles.

  • An unstructured hybrid mesh flow solver has been developed for the simulation of three-dimensional steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields. The incompressible Navier-Stokes equations with an artificial compressibility method were discretized by using a node-based finite-volume method. For the unsteady time-accurate computation, a dual-time stepping method was adopted to satisfy a divergence-free flow field at each physical time step. An implicit time integration method with local time stepping was implemented to accelerate the convergence in the pseudo-time sub-iteration procedure. The one-equation Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model has been adopted to solve high-Reynolds number flow fields. The flow solver was parallelized to minimize the CPU time and to overcome the computational overhead. This method has been applied to calculate steady and unsteady flow fields around submarine configurations and a 3-D infinite cylinder. Validations were made by comparing the predicted results with those of experiments or other numerical results. It was demonstrated that the present method is efficient and robust for the prediction of steady and unsteady incompressible flow fields.

  • In this study, a steady and unsteady aerodynamic analysis program using a 3-dimensional subsonic unstructured panel method is developed and verified. Surfaces of bodies are modeled with the source and doublet distributions on triangular or quadrilateral panels. Geometry modeling of complex geometries and multi-body, therefore, can be easily accomplished. The Kelvin theory and the unsteady Kutta condition allow the doublet strength of the wake panels determined for unsteady flows. Various steady and unsteady flows in two and three dimensions are computed and compared with the analytical and the published computational results.

  • The flows through a turbomachinery tend to be extremely complex due to its inherent unsteady and viscous phenomena. A good analysis of the flows associated with rotor/stator interactions in turbomachinery will be great help in design stage. In this investigation, unsteady viscous flow structurts through one and half stage of UTRC large scale rotating axial turbine are analysed. The numerical data was compared with experimental data and showed good agreement.

  • Three-dimensional and unsteady flow analysis is a practical target of high performance computation. As recently advances of computers, a numerical prediction by the large eddy simulation (LES) are introduced and evaluated for various engineering problems. Its advanced methods for the complex turbulent flows are discussed by several examples applied for aerodynamic designs, analysis of fluid flow mechanisms and their interaction to complex phenomena. These results of time-dependent and three-dimensional phenomena are visualized by interactive graphics and animations.
