Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved using SIMPLER method in the intrinsic curvilinear coordinates system to study the unsteady viscous flow physics over two-dimensional ellipses. Unsteady viscous flows over various thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 200, 400, and 1,000. This study is focused on the understanding the effects of Reynolds number and elliptic cylinder thickness on the drag and lift forces. The present numerical solutions are compared with available experimental and numerical results and show a good agreement. Through this study, it is observed that the Reynolds number and the cylinder thickness affect significantly the frequencies of the force oscillations as well as the mean values and the amplitudes of the drag and lift forces.

The purpose of this study is to present the most effective numerical scheme to calculate the unsteady flows. In order to calculate the flow quantities of flow past a circular cylinder, Three-time level and five convective schemes are applied to unsteady and convective terms, respectively. The values obtained are compared with those from the existing experimental and numerical studies. At Reynolds numbers up to 160, time intervals can be expanded 10 times of Implicit Euler scheme using Three-time level method, and it is found that QUICK and CUI schemes work much stable than others even if less grid density conditions. The combination of Three-time level and QUICK scheme gives high resolutions for laminar unsteady problems with PC level.

Vortex shedding which is the dominant feature of body wakes and of direct relevance to practical engineering problems, has been intensively studied for flows past a circular cylinder. In contrast, vortex shedding from a hydrofoil trailing edge has been studied to much less extent despite numerous practical applications. The physics of the problem is still poorly understood. The present study deals with $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$ vortex shedding from a truncated trailing-edge hydrofoil in relatively high Reynolds number flows. The objectives of this paper are twofold. First, we aim to simulate unsteady turbulent flows past a two dimensional hydrofoil through a hybrid particle-mesh method and penalization method. The vortex-in-cell (VIC) method offers a highly efficient particle-mesh algorithm that combines Lagrangian and Eulerian schemes, and the penalization method enables to enforce body boundary conditions by adding a penalty term to the momentum equation. The second purpose is to investigate shedding frequencies of vortices behind a NACA 0009 hydrofoil operating at a zero angle of attack.

Direct numerical simulation was carried out to study the vortical structures of the flow around a wall-mounted cube in a channel at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500 based on cubic height and bulk mean velocity. The cubic obstacle is situated in the entrance region of the channel flow where the boundary layers are developing. Upstream of the obstacle, steady and unsteady laminar horseshoe vortex systems are observed at Re=1,000 and Re=3,500, respectively; the near-wake flow is turbulent in both cases. The flow separates at each leading sharp edge of the cube, and subsequent vortex roll-up is noticed in the corresponding free-shear layer. The vortex shedding from the upper leading edge (upper vortices) and that from the two lateral leading edges (lateral vortices) are both quasi-periodic and their frequencies are computed. The upper and lateral vortices further develop into hairpin and Λ vortices, respectively. A series of instantaneous contours of the second invariant of velocity gradient tensor helps us identify spatial and temporal behaviors of the vortices in detail. The results indicate that the length and time scales of the vortical structures at Re=3,500 are much shorter than those at Re:1,000. Correlations between the upper and lateral vortices are also reported.
Separation control has been performed using synthetic jets on airfoil at high angle of attack. Computed results demonstrated that stall characteristics and control surface performance could be substantially improved by resizing separation vortices. It was observed that the actual flow control mechanism and flow structure is fundamentally different depending on the range of synthetic jet frequency. For low frequency range, small vortices due to synthetic jet penetrated to the large leading edge separation vortex, and as a result, the size of the leading edge vortex was remarkably reduced. For high frequency range, however, small vortex did not grow up enough to penetrate into the leading edge separation vortex. Instead, synthetic jet firmly attached the local flow and influenced the circulation of the virtual airfoil shape which is the combined shape of the main airfoil with the separation vortex. Theses results show the characteristic of unsteady flow of single synthetic jet. Beside, we researched on multi-array synthetic jet to obtain applicable synthetic jet velocity. Multi-location synthetic jet is proposed to eliminate small vortex on suction surface of airfoil. With the results, we concluded that the flow around airfoil is stable by high frequency synthetic jet with elimination of small vortex and confirmation of stable flow. Moreover, performance of multi-array/multi-location synthetic jet can be improved by changing phase angle of multi-location synthetic jet.
This paper represents a numerical study of the flow field due to the interactions between a pair of vortices produced by vortex generators in a rectangular channel flow. In order to analyze longitudinal vortices induced by the vortex generators, the pseudo-compressibility method is introduced into the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Strokes equations of a 3-dimensional unsteady, incompressible viscous flow. A two-layer $k-{\epsilon}$ turbulence model is applied to a flat plate 3-dimensional turbulence boundary to predict the flow structure and turbulence characteristics of the vortices. The computational results predict accurately the vortex characteristics related to the flow field, the Reynolds shear stresses and turbulent kinetic energy. Also, in the prediction of skin friction characteristics the computational results are reasonably close to those of the experiment obtained from other researchers.

The fluid dynamic properties of a circular arc type sea anchor were calculated by a discrete vortex method. The flow for the surface of the sea anchor was represented by arranging bound vortices at adequate intervals. The simulations were performed by assuming that the separations occur at edges. With time, the drag coefficient was almost constant but the lift coefficient oscillated in a cycle by von Karman's vortex street. As the camber ratios increase, the drag coefficient and Strouhal number were almost constant but the oscillating amplitude of the lift coefficient increased largely.
In the vortex particle method based on the vorticity-velocity formulation for solving the Wavier-Stokes equations, the unsteady, incompressible, viscous laminar flow over a NACA 0012 foil is simulated. By applying an operator-splitting method, the 'convection' and 'diffusion' equations are solved sequentially at each time step. The convection equation is solved using the vortex particle method, and the diffusion equation using the particle strength exchange(PSE) scheme which is modified to avoid a spurious vorticity flux. The scheme is improved for variety body shape using one image layer scheme. For a validation of the present method, we illustrate the early development of the viscous flow about an impulsively started NACA 0012 foil for Reynolds number 550.
A Numerical study of laminar vortex-shedding past a circular cylinder has been performed widely by many researchers. Many factors, such as numerical technique and domain size, number and shape of grid, affected predicting vortex shedding and Strouhal number. In the present study, the effect of convection scheme, time discretization methods and grid dependence were investigated. The present paper presents the finite volume solution of unsteady flow past circular cylinder at Re=200, 400. The Strouhal number was predicted using UDS, CDS, Hybrid, Power-law, LUDS, QUICK scheme for convection term, implicit and crank-nicolson methods for time discretization. The grid dependence was investigated using H-type mesh and O-type mesh. It also studied that the effect of mesh size of the nearest adjacent grid of circular cylinder. The effect of convection scheme is greater than the effect of time discretization on predicting Strouhal. It has been found that the predicted Strouhal number changed with mesh size and shape.

Nnumerical investigations of the tip vortical characteristics were conducted with lateral tip blowing to reduce Blade-Vortex Interaction (BVI) noise. The predictions of BVI noise were performed using a combined method of an unsteady Euler code with an aeroacoustic code based on Ffowcs- Williams and Hawkings formulation. A moving overlapped grid system with three types of grids (blade grid, inner and outer background grid) was used to simulate BVI of helicopter with two OLS-airfoil blades in forward/ descending flight condition. The calculated waveform of BVI noise, which is characterized by the distinct peaks caused during blade vortex interaction, clearly shows the effect of lateral blowing at tip to reduce BVI noise
