Background: Functional ankle instability (FAI) indicating a decrease in muscle strength, proprioception, neuromuscular control, balance and postural control function. Objective: To investigate the effect of jumping exercise on the supporting surface on the ankle muscle thickness, proprioceptive sensation, and balance in adults with FAI. Design: Randomized Controlled Trial. Methods: Twenty young people with FAI were randomly assigned to the unstable supporting surface jump group (N=10) and the stable supporting surface jump group (N=10). The intervention was conducted three times a week for eight weeks, and for 30 minutes per session. Trampoline was used as an unstable support surface and the stable support surface was carried out on a regular floor. The thickness of the tibialis anterior muscle and medial gastrocnemius muscle was measured by ultrasonography, and the proprioception of dorsiflexion and plantarflexion was measured using an electrogoniometer. The dynamic balance was also measured with a balance meter. Results: The the muscle thickness of the medial gastrocnemius muscle was significantly higher in the stable supporting surface jump group than in the unstable supporting surface jump group (p<.05). Furthermore, the plantar flexion proprioception and dynamic balance were significantly improved in the unstable supporting surface jump group than in the stable supporting surface jump group in the intergroup comparison (p<.05). Conclusions: The conclusion has been reached in this study that the jumping exercise on the unstable supporting surface could be a more effective in improving FAI than the regular surface.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effects of lumbar stabilization exercise on static and dynamic balance performance with unstable supporting surface and an even surface. Methods : The subjects of this experimental study were 30 patients among hospitalized stroke patients. They were randomly divided into two groups: unstable supporting surface group(USS; n=15) and an even surface group(ES; n=15). The lumbar stabilization exercise program for patients in two groups went through 40 minute exercise sessions three times a week for 8 weeks. To analyze the effects of a variety of supporting surface, Functional reaching test(FRT), Berg's balance scale(BBS), and Overall stability index(static balance) were measured before and after the exercise. The paired t-test was used to compare mean differences between before and after exercis and the independent t-test was used to compare mean differences between groups. Results : After 8 weeks exercise program, there were significant differences between before and after exercise in FRT, BBS, and static balance. But there were not significant differences in balance between two groups. Conclusion : This study suggest that lumbar stabilization exercise on unstable supporting surface and an even surface can improve FRT, BBS, and a static balance.
Purpose: This study was an investigation of the effect of unstable supporting exercise in young adults with functional ankle instability. The study tested the use of a jumper and virtual reality (VR) training via a VR-head mounted display (HMD) system to provide functional improvement in proprioception, range of motion (ROM), ankle muscle strength, agility, and balance. Methods: The subjects comprised 61 young adults (in their twenties) with functional ankle instability to decide as less than 24 points using Cumberland ankle instability tool. The subjects were divided into three groups: VUS (VR-HMD and unstable supporting exercise, n = 20), VSS (VR-HMD and stable supporting exercise, n = 19), and NUS (non-VR-HMD and unstable supporting exercise, n = 22). The exercise program was conducted three times per week for three weeks. VR training via a VR-HMD system and a VR application on a smart mobile device were used with the VUS and VSS groups, and unstable supporting exercise was used in the VUS and NUS groups for 30 minutes. Proprioception, ROM, ankle muscle strength, agility, and balance were measured before and after training. Results: The VUS group showed significant differences in most results, including proprioception, ROM, ankle muscle strength, agility, and balance to compare before and after, and the VSS and NUS groups partially. Moreover, the VUS group had significant differences in most results when compared with the other groups. Conclusion: Unstable supporting exercise and VR training via a VR-HMD system improved functional ankle instability in terms of proprioception, ROM, ankle muscle strength, agility, and balance.
Background: This study evaluates the effects of lower muscle activity of squat exercise on supporting surface and visual feedback. Methods: The subjects include 30 healthy subjects. To measure muscle activation of the lower limb during squat exercise(stable and unstable surface, visual and unvisual). For evaluation of muscle activation(rectus femoris, biceps femoris), was measured using the Electromyogram, EMG was used. Results: The results shows that Rectus Femoris(RF) and Biceps Femoris(BF) muscle activations were significantly (p<0.05) difference in unvisual-unstable surface(USUV), unvisual-stable surface(SUV), visual-unstable surface(USA), and visual-stable surface(SV) during squat exercise. Conclusion: Squat exercise can improve muscle activation of the lowe limb. particularly, unvisual-unstable surface during squat exercise can improve muscle activation of the lowe limb.
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to examine the Effect of Lunge Exercise on the Balance of Stable and Unstable Supporting surface. Method : The experimenter was a healthy twenties male and female. The period was two weeks, divided into a stable group and a unstable group. Setting the holding time 4 sec 3 sets of 10 times using the Stable and Unstable Supporting Surfaces. The break time was set at one minute for each set. Balance cushions were used for unstable supporting surfaces. Results : After Lunge Exercise, Both groups had an impact on improving their ability to balance. Conclusion : There has not been much change in the ability to balance the stable and Unstable Supporting Surfaces. However, considering surface conditions, the pre and post exercise comparisons had an effect on improving the ability to balance.

Purpose : The aim of this study is to compare the trunk muscle activities in trunk stabilization on the stable and unstable supporting surfaces using by sEMG. Methods : The subjects of this study include seventeen male. We measured sEMG activities of rectus abdominis and erector spine in subjects during trunk stabilization such as plank exercise, quadruped position, quadruped position with rising hand and foot on the stable and unstable surface. Results : sEMG activities in plank exercise was significantly higher in left rectus abdominis and left erector spine on unstable surface then stable surface (p<.05). sEMG activities of left rectus abdominis and left erector spine in quadruped position was significantly higher in unstable surface than stable surface (p<.05). In comparison with posture, Plank exercise showed a significant difference increase other postures (p<.05). Conclusion : sEMG activities of muscle in trunk stabilization was significantly higher in unstable surface than stable surface and plank exercise. So, we suggest that trunk stabilization on the unstable supporting surface and plank exercise were more effective method than stable surface to improve trunk muscles activities.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to assess how much neurac technic affects the stability muscles of the shoulder according to the supporting surface in crawling position. Method: 29 healthy adult males participated in this experiment. The experiment consists of 2 experimental groups and 1 control group. It is conducted for 3 weeks. Each group exercised for 7 seconds and then rested for 3 seconds. Using EMG, the average value of serratus anterior, upper trapezius, and lower trapezius was repeated three times. Experimental group 1 conducted push up plus exercise applied neurac technic with sling on unstable supporting surface. Experimental group 2 conducted push up plus exercise applied neurac technic with sling on stable supporting surface. Control group conducted the push up plus exercise on stable supporting surface. One-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis. Result: It was noticeable that the result of Experimental group 1 affects stability muscles of more than Experimental group 2 and Control group. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of single limb stance exercise according to the support surface on dynamic balance ability and abdominal muscle thickness. Methods : We recruited 28 healthy subjects in this study. Subjects were assigned to 2 groups by matching method. The control group was 5 males and 9 females, and single limb stance exercise was performed on the stable support surface. The experimental group consisted of 6 males and 8 females, and trained to stand on the unstable support. During the single limb stance exercise, the dominant foot was set as the foot that appeared numerically through the exercise of the dynamic balance meter (Biorescue). Single limb stance exercise along the supporting surface was maintained for 15 seconds and then rested for 15 seconds. It was repeated 5 times. Particularly, the balance exercise on the unstable support surface was sufficiently practiced. Independent t test was performed for comparison between groups. Paired t test was performed to compare before and after each group. Results : There was no difference between the control group and the experimental group in the comparison of dynamic balance ability (p>.05). However, there were significant differences before and after exercise in both the control and experimental groups (p<.05). Similarly, in the comparison of abdominal muscle thickness, there was a significant difference within each group, especially internal oblique and transverse abdominis (p<.05), and no difference between groups (p>.05). Conclusion : Based on these results, although there was no difference between the groups, in the experimental group, numerical increase in dynamic balance ability and abdominal muscle thickness was confirmed. Therefore, single limb stance exercise on the unstable support surfaces activates core muscles and has a positive effect on dynamic balancing ability.
