Behavior of rock mass depend on the mechanical properties of intact rock and geometrical property of discontinuity distributed in rock mass. In case of rock slope, particularly, location of slope failure surface and behavior after failure are changed due to discontinuities. In this study, two 3D slope stability analysis methods were developed for two different failure types which are circular failure and planar failure, considering that failure type of rock slope is dependent on scale of discontinuity which was then applied to real rock slope to review the applicability. In case of circular failure, stable condition was maintained in natural dry condition, which however became unstable when the moisture content of the surface was increased by rainfall. In case of planar failure, rock slope become more unstable comparing to dry condition which is attributable to decrease in friction angle of discontinuity surface due to rainfall. Viewing analysis result above, analysis method proved to have well incorporated the phenomenon occurred on real slope from the analysis result, demonstrating its applicability to reviewing the slope stability as well as to maintaining the slope.
It has been reported that good quality weld beads are not easily obtained during the $CO_2$ CW laser welding of primer coated plate. However, by introducing a small gap clearance in the lap position, the zinc vapor can escape through it and sound weld beads can be acquired. Therefore, this study examines for keyhole behavior by observing the laser-induced plasma and investigates the relation between keyhole behavior and formation of weld defect. Laser-induced plasma has accompanied with the vaporizing pressure of zinc ejecting from keyhole to surface of primer coated plate. This dynamic behavior of plasma was very unstable and this instability was closely related to the unstable motion of keyhole during laser welding. As a result of observing the composition of porosity, much of Zn element was found from inner surface of porosity. But Zn was not found from the dimple structure fractured at the weld metal. By analyzing of vaporizing element in laser welding, a component ratio of Zn was decreased by introducing a small gap clearance. Therefore we can prove that the major cause of porosity is the vaporization of primer in lap position. Mechanism of porosity-formation is that the primer vaporized from the lap position accelerates dynamic behavior of the key hole and the bubble separated from the key hole is trapped in the solidification boundary and romaines as porosity.

Membrane structures, a kind of lightweight soft structural system, are used for spatial structures. The material property of the membrane has strong axial stiffness, but little bending stiffness. Therefore membrane structures are unstable structures initially. These soft structures need to be introduced initial stresses first because of its initial unstable state, and it happens large deformation phenomenon. To find the structural shape after large deformation caused by initial stiffness introduced, we need the shape analysis considering geometric nonlinearity in structural design procedure In this study, we analyze the soft spatial structures by the NASS which is the program for nonlinear analysis. The analytic model is a roof membrane structures of Barrel Vault-Type. We have done the shape analysis and the stress-deformation analysis considering the orthotropic material, and then study the safety.
On the assessment results of the non-point source pollutant removability of bio-block using waste sewage sludge, at the reactor's initial operation stage, the removal efficiency of COD was slightly unstable. However, after the reactor was stabilized, the COD removal efficiency was higher in the reactor filled with bio-blocks compared to the reactor filled with broken stones. In terms of nitrogen and phosphorus, their removal efficiency was unstable at the initial stage of the reactor operation. This phenomenon was investigated through the bio-block elution experiments. Results indicated that nitrogen and phosphorus were eluted from the bio-blocks affecting their removal at the initial operation. Furthermore, based on elution tests conducted after the dry ashing of the waste sewage sludge, part of the nitrogen and phosphorus was eluted similar to the bio-block elution test results, although considerable amounts of nitrogen and phosphorus were reduced compared to the sludge cake. Prior to the use of the waste sewage sludge bio-blocks as a filter medium to remove non-point source pollutants, a stabilization period of 10 days was required. After the stabilization process, results showed similar characteristics as general aggregates. Moreover, to use the bio-block as a filter medium for the non-point pollutant removal, the filling ratio of 75% was the most suitable as it resulted in the highest nitrogen removal efficiency after the stabilization. The results of this study suggested that waste sewage sludge can be suitably recycled as a mixed raw material for the bio-blocks, with satisfactory application as a filter medium in artificial wetlands, stormwater runoff problems, stream water pollutants to eliminate non-point source pollutants.

Supercavitation is a phenomenon in which the cavity covers the entire underwater vehicle. The purpose of this paper is to compare and analyze the thermal effect on the cavity characteristics by changing the ventilated gas temperature through computational analysis. For this study, a homogeneous mixture model based on the 3D Navier-Stokes equation was used. As a phase change model, it is its own code considering both pressure change and temperature change. A dimensionless number Tm was presented to analyze the numerical results, and as the Tm increased, the cavity length increased by about 3.6 times and the cavity width by about 3.3 times at 393.15 K compared to room temperature. Analyzing these thermal effects, it was confirmed that rapid heat exchange and heat transfer between the gas phase and the liquid phase occurred at the location where the ventilated gas was sprayed, affecting the cavity characteristics. In addition, it can be confirmed that the initial cavity surface becomes unstable as the ventilated gas temperature increases, and it can be confirmed based on the numerical analysis results that the critical temperature at which the cavity surface becomes unstable is 373.15 K.
This study was carried out to safety evaluation, the practical application and improvement of design method of the agricultural reservoir due to raising embankments. Also, it was to compare and analyze the pore water pressure (PWP), seepage (leakage) quantity and piping phenomenon according to high water table and rapid drawdown. The seepage analysis by finite element analysis was used for steady state and transient condition. The pore water pressure distribution for steady state and transient condition showed positive(+) PWP on the upstream slope, it was gradually changed negative(-) PWP on the downstream slope. The PWP in the core ranged from 100 ~ -33 kPa, the seepage line in the incline-type core suddenly decreased towards the lower levels from the higher levels. The PWP according to rapid drawdown is remained in the vicinity of the upstream slope, therefore, it is investigated to be in an unstable state by the slope stability analysis. The PWP after raising embankments showed smaller than in the before raising embankments. It was likely to be the piping phenomenon because the gradients in the before raising embankments showed largely at downstream slope, and the stability for piping in the after raising embankments increased stable state. The seepage quantity per 1 day and the leakage per 100m for the steady state and transient condition appeared to be safe against the piping. It reduced slightly regardless of the transient condition before the raising embankments and it decreased largely about 2.4 times in the early days after the raising embankments.
In this study, we investigated the halo surface defection of various phenomenon occurred during the injection molding process which is caused by the thinning of the product thickness and the importance of the appearance. Surface analysis was performed to observe the difference between the surface where defects appeared and the surface which did not appear. Based on these results, we analyzed the phenomenon of halo surface defects was caused by unstable flow of resin generated in injection molding and velocity change of flow front. Furthermore, we will conduct a clear analysis of halo surface defects through observations through optical microscopy and subsequent observations with atomic force microscope. It has been analyzed that halo in PP is due to the rheological difference between the crystalline and amorphous regions while that in PC/ABS is due to shear separation of PC and ABS.

This paper introduces a newly developed high speed material testing apparatus for tensile tests at the strain rate up to 500/sec. The tensile properties of sheet metals are indispensable for the accurate crashworthiness analysis of auto-bodies since the local strain rate reaches to 500/sec in the car crash. An appropriate experimental method has to be developed to acquire the tensile properties at the intermediate strain rate ranged from 0.003/sec to 200/sec. Tensile tests of various different steel sheets for an auto-body were perform ed to obtain the dynamic properties with respect to the strain rate. The dimensions of specimens that can provide the reasonable results were determined by the finite element analysis. A special jig fixture of a load cell is designed to reduce the load ringing phenomenon induced by unstable stress propagation at the high strain rate. Stress-strain curves were acquired for each steel sheet from the dynamic tensile test and utilized to obtain the relationship of the stress to the strain rate.

The some papers which deal with the dynamic instability for shell-like structures under the step load have been published, but there are few papers which treat the essential phenomenon of the dynamic buckling using the phase plane for investigating occurrence of chaos. In nonlinear dynamics, examining the characteristics of attractor on the phase plane and investigating the dynamic buckling process are very important thing for understanding why unstable phenomena are sensitively originated by various initial conditions. In this study, the direct and the indirect snap-buckling of shallow arches considering geometrical nonlinearity are investigated numerically and compared with the static critical load.
The Yellow Sand Events observed over the Korean peninsula during 22-24 April, 1993 were examined using the synoptic data and GMS visible image to identify the transport path of the Yellow Sand and the main factor governing the duration of the Yellow Sand phenomenon. The 850 hPa convergence chart and the 700 hPa trajectory analyses of the air mass laden with Yellow Sand particles suggested that the Yellow Sand particles observed over Korea were probably transported from the Gobi Desert and the Loess Plateau. The duration of the Yellow Sand Events was about 35-40 hours rather shorter than normal as the high pressure system centered near the Mongolia region moved rapidly toward the Yellow Sea, which drove away the Yellow Sand particles over the Korean peninsula toward the Japan Islands, furthermore the low-level stratification of the air mass over the Korean penishula showed the unstable atmospheric condition leading to atmospheric diffusion of the particles. The trajectory analyses and the GMS visible image indicated that the long-range transport of the air mass laden with the Yellow Sand particles of this case was more dependent on the 700 hPa air flow than on the 850 hPa air flow.
