Atomic scale crystal growth processes

  • Computer simulations have played a central role in the development of our understanding of the atomic scale processes involved in crystal growth. The assumptions underlying computer modeling will be discussed and our recent work on modeling of the kinetic formation of thermodynamically unstable phases in alloys or mixtures will be reviewed. Our Monte Carlo computer simulations have reproduced the experimental results on the rapid recrystallization of laser-melted doped silicon. An analytical model for this phenomenon has been developed, and its applicability to other materials will be discussed.

  • Many papers which deal with the dynamic instability for shell-like structures under the step load have been published, but there are few papers which treat the essential phenomenon of the dynamic buckling using the phase plane for investigating occurrence of chaos. Dynamic buckling process in the phase plane is a very important thing for understanding why unstable phenomena are sensitively originated in nonlinear dynamics by various initial conditions. In this study, the direct and the indirect snap-buckling of shallow arches considering geometrical nonlinearity are investigated numerically and compared with the static critical load.

균열재(龜裂材)의 불안정연성파괴(不安定延性破壞)에 대한 J 적분(J積分) 평가(評價)를 위한 탄소성해석(彈塑性解析) (Elasto-Plastic Analysis for J-integral Evaluation of Unstable Fracture in Cracked Ductile Materials)

  • 본(本) 연구(硏究)는 소규모강복범위(小規模降伏範圍)를 벗어나는 대규모강복조건하(大規模降伏條件下)에서 구조안정성(構造安定性)에 관(關)한 중요(重要)한 문제(問題)인 불안정연성파괴(不安定延性破壞)를 평가(評價)할 수 있는 파괴역학인자(破壞力學因子)로서의 J 적분(積分)을 수치해(數値解)로서 구하는데 그 목적(目的)을 두었다. 이를 위해 균열재(龜裂材)의 균열선단요소(龜裂先端要素)로 8절점등방특이요소(節點等方特異要素)를 사용(使用)하고, 균열발생(發生)은 파괴인성(破壞靭性) $J_{IC}$를 초과할 때 일어나도록 하였으며, 그리고 균열성장(成長)의 취급(取級)은 균열개구각(龜裂開口角)을 이용(利用)했다. 본(本) 연구(硏究)에 의해 해석(解析)된 J 적분치(積分値)를 사용(使用)하여 균열재의 균열발생 과 안정성장(安定成長), 불안정(不安定) 발생점(發生點)을 찾은 결과(結果) 다른 연구결과(硏究結果)와 잘 일치(一致)하고 있어 탄소성(彈塑性)을 고려(考慮)한 J 적분치(積分値)가 균열의 안정성장(安定成長) 및 불안정연성파괴(不安定延性破壞) 문제(問題)를 다루는 파괴역학인자(破壞力學因子)로서 직접(直接) 이용(利用)될 수 있음을 보였다.

세미 플로팅 링 베어링으로 지지된 터보차저의 Subsynchronous 진동 특성 (Subsynchronous Vibration Behavior of Turbocharger Supported by Semi Floating Ring Bearing)

  • The small turbocharger for the automotive application is designed to operate up to 200,000 rpm to increase system efficiency. Because of high rotation speed of turbocharger, floating ring bearing are widely adopted due to its low friction loss and high rotordynamic stability. This paper presents a linear and nonlinear analysis model for a turbocharger rotor supported by a semi-floating ring bearing. The rotordynamic model for the turbocharger rotor was constructed based on the finite element method and fluid film forces were calculated based on the infinitely short bearing assumption. In linear analysis, we considered fluid film force as stiffness and damping element and in nonlinear analysis, the fluid film force was calculated by solving the time dependent Reynolds equation. We verified the developed theoretical model by comparing to modal test results of test rotors. The analysis results show that there are two unstable modes, which are conical and cylindrical modes. These unstable modes appear as sub-synchronous vibrations in nonlinear analysis. In nonlinear analysis, frequency jump phenomenon demonstrated when vibration mode is changed from conical mode to cylindrical one. This jump phenomenon was also demonstrated in the test. However, the natural frequency measured in the test differs from those obtained using nonlinear analysis.

경락노선상 직류 전위 측정에서의 문제점 (The Problems in the Measurement of DC Potential on Meridian Skin Area)

  • Background and purpose: The measurement of direct current (DC) potential on skin area of meridian has recently been adopted to explore the electrophysiological characteristics of meridian system, But there exists two problems to be explained; the entity of the DC potential to be measured and the characteristics of electrode gel interface of measurement system, It is not clear whether the DC potential reflect, at least hypothetically, the entity of meridian, and if there exist any unstable factor in the DC potential measurement system. Methods: In this study, we designed an electronic circuit model of skin and applied known DC potential sources $({\pm}10.75mV,\;0mV)$ to the electrode interface of the skin model. Results: The result showed that the measured DC potential changed according to the time, and the same phenomenon was observed when the electrode gel was replaced with an electric condenser. It is suggested that the measurement of DC potential on electrode gel interface is very difficult and produces unstable values due to the capacity effect of electrode gel. Conclusion: Further studies on the DC potential evaluation in the context of meridian study should consider and bypass this problem.

  • 본 논문에서는 쉘형 스페이스 프레임 구조물의 구조 불안정 특성을 조사한다. 대공간 구조물은 대경간을 가볍게 만들기 위해 두께비를 얇게 만들어야 하므로, 구조설계시 구조불안정 검토가 중요하다. 쉘형 구조물의 구조불안정은 다양한 조건에 따라 민감하게 반응하며, 이는 대변형을 수반하는 비선형 문제에 귀착하게 된다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 기하학적 비선형을 고려한 수치해석 기법을 통하여 쉘형 스페이스 프레임 구조물의 하중 및 경계조건에 따른 불안정 거동을 비교하고, 불안정 현상에 미치는 영향을 파악하여 기초적인 붕괴 메커니즘을 규명한다.

산업차량용 토크컨버터의 작동 안정성 평가 방법에 대한 연구 (A Study on the Evaluation Method of the Operation Stability of a Torque Converter Mounted on Industrial Vehicle)

  • This paper presents the induced mathematical modeling equations for evaluating the operation stability with automatic transmission of heavy duty vehicle. This theoretical approach indicates that linearized governing equations of system can be converted into eigen-value problems. if the eigen-value has positive number, we can predict the engine operating point locates an unstable operating region. To be a stable state, the unstable operating point diverges toward a stable point which is able to maintain uniform velocity. Based on the previous theoretical analysis, we carry out dynamic simulation to show the behavior of engine operating point and torque converter in transient state. As a result of the dynamic simulation, the suggested theoretical method is found to be reasonable for evaluating the operation stability of a torque converter. In addition, the numerical results explain the engine stops and fluctuating phenomenon in reality.

Dynamic interaction analysis of actively controlled maglev vehicles and guideway girders considering nonlinear electromagnetic forces

  • This study intends to explore dynamic interaction behaviors between actively controlled maglev vehicle and guideway girders by considering the nonlinear forms of electromagnetic force and current exactly. For this, governing equations for the maglev vehicle with ten degrees of freedom are derived by considering the nonlinear equation of electromagnetic force, surface irregularity, and the deflection of the guideway girder. Next, equations of motion of the guideway girder, based on the mode superposition method, are obtained by applying the UTM-01 control algorithm for electromagnetic suspension to make the maglev vehicle system stable. Finally, the numerical studies under various conditions are carried out to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the maglev system based on consideration of the linear and nonlinear electromagnetic forces. From numerical simulation, it is observed that the dynamic responses between nonlinear and linear analysis make little difference in the stable region. But unstable responses in nonlinear analysis under poor conditions can sometimes be obtained because the nominal air-gap is too small to control the maglev vehicle stably. However, it is demonstrated that this unstable phenomenon can be removed by making the nominal air-gap related to electromagnetic force larger. Consequently it is judged that the nonlinear analysis method considering the nonlinear equations of electromagnetic force and current can provide more realistic solutions than the linear analysis.

Methodology for Determining of Generator Operation Point for Ensuring Voltage Stability Against Generator Faults in Jeju-Haenam HVDC System

  • This paper presents a new algorithm for determining generator operation point for maintaining stability considering generator faults in Jeju-Haenam HVDC system. As the HVDC system consumes reactive power for the transmission of active power substantially, compensation of reactive power is essential. And the HVDC system is operated on frequency control mode. That is to say, the HVDC system almost manages system frequency. Therefore, we recognized that the Jeju system could be unstable if the reactive power consumed by the HVDC is insufficient when out-of-step occurs with large generators. When the solution of power flow analysis does not converge due to the unstable system phenomenon, we have difficulty in establishing countermeasures as the post-fault information is not available. In this paper, for the purpose of overcoming this difficulty in establishing countermeasures, we introduce the CPF(Continuation Power Flow) algorithm. This paper suggests an algorithm for calculating the output limitation of the generator to maintain the stability in case of generator fault in the Jeju system.

구조시스템에 따른 Tensegrity형 케이블 돔의 정적 불안정 거동특성 (The Static Unstable Characteristics of Tensegrity-Type Cable Dome according to the Structural System)

  • 대공간 구조는 3차원적인 힘의 흐름과 면내력에 의해 외부하중에 대한 저항능력을 확보하는 형태저항형 구조로서 기본적인 구조저항 메커니즘은 구조물 자체의 곡률을 이용하여 면외방향으로 작용하는 외력을 주로 면내력으로 저항할 수 있게 한 구조시스템이다. 따라서 최소의 재료로, 가볍고 얇게 대공간을 만들 수 있는 장점이 있다. 대공간 구조시스템 중 연성 구조물의 일종인 막 구조, 케이블 구조 또는 복합 구조체로서의 막-케이블 구조물의 비약적인 발전이 최근 주목을 끌고 있다. 즉, 기존의 일반 구조재보다 가볍고 축 강성은 강하나 휨 강성은 매우 작은 막 및 케이블을 사용하여 대공간 구조물을 보다 효과적으로 구축할 수 있는 구조시스템을 말한다. 그러나, 이러한 구조물은 하중 레벨이 어느 임계값에 도달하면 구조물의 형상에 따라 뜀좌굴(snap-through) 또는 분기좌굴(bifurcation)에 의한 불안정 현상이 일어나며, 이로 인한 파괴 메커니즘의 파악은 구조설계에서 매우 중요하다. 본 연구에서는 텐세그리티형 케이블 돔 구조물의 구조시스템에 따른 정적 불안정 거동 특성을 파악하기 위해 먼저, 형상해석을 통해 복합 케이블 돔 구조물인 Geiger형, Zetlin형 및 Flower형 케이블 돔 구조물의 초기응력에 의한 형상을 결정하고, 형상해석 결과를 기준으로 하여 정적 외력에 의한 불안정 문제를 파악하고자 한다.
