Fundamental features of the arc stability in DC arc furnace of 720V/100kA/72MW have been investigated. Cassie-Mayr arc model has been employed and applied for the target dc arc furnace. In order to characterize the parameters of Cassie-Mayr arc model and the behavior of unstable arc dynamics, the advanced arc simulations of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) has been performed. The MHD based arc simulation has been validated in the subcomponent level, for the free burning arc set up in the laboratory. From the results of MHD simulation, dc arc dynamic resistance is proposed to be an effective arc stability function reflecting the instability of dynamic arc behavior. The experimental result confirms the usefulness of proposed dynamic arc resistance as arc stability function. The proposed arc stability function can be regarded as an effective criterion for the overall power conversion system to maintain highly stable arcing operation leading to better productivity and reliability.

This research examined the mechanical behavior of fiber-reinforced concrete at unstable environmental conditions. Concrete composites with varying percentages of steel and glass fibers were analyzed. Compressive, indirect tensile, and fracture toughness properties were evaluated using the Edge Notched Disc Bend (ENDB) test under freezing-thawing and acidic environments and the results were compared with normal conditions. Steel fibers decreased the strength in the specified cycles, while glass fibers showed a normal strength trend. The compressive, tensile and fracture toughness of the samples containing 1.5 vol.% fibers showed a 1.28-, 2.13- and 4.5-fold enhancement compared to samples without fibers, after 300 freezing-thawing cycles, respectively.
The purpose of this research is to find relationships between safeguards' personality traits and stress coping behaviors. The findings then could provide data to adapt safeguards to their duties. For that, personality traits such as sociability, stability and stress coping behaviors and the effects were investigated. In addition, cognitive aspects which were known to influence stress coping behaviors were appraised. The findings of this research are as follows, First, regarding personality traits and stress coping behaviors, the unstable and unsocial group used the emotion-focused coping style more than the stable and social group. The two groups didn't show any significant differences in the problem-focused coping style. The A-type group used both the problem-focused style and the emotion-focused style more than the B-type group. The common characteristic of the unstable, the unsociable and the A-type groups was the heavy use of avoidance behaviors of the emotion-focused coping style. Second, In the correlation between the personal traits and the stress coping effects regarding adaptability, the stability influenced stress coping effects. Third, regarding the personality traits, the coping styles and the coping effects, A-type group showed high correlation with the sociability but not with the stability. The problem-focused coping style showed high correlation with the emotion-focused style. Fourth, the cognitive appraisal on the stress causes influenced the stress coping styles but not the stress coping effects. Fifth, the cognitive appraisal on the same stress causes didn't show any significant differences among the personality traits.
A stadium roof that uses the pin-jointed spatial truss system has to be designed by taking into account the unstable phenomenon due to the geometrical non-linearity of the long span. This phenomenon is mainly studied in the single-free-node model (SFN) or double-free-node model (DFN). Unlike the simple SFN model, the more complex DFN model has a higher order of characteristic equations, making analysis of the system's stability complicated. However, various symmetric conditions can allow limited analysis of these problems. Thus, this research looks at the stability of the DFN model which is assumed to be symmetric in shape, and its load and equilibrium state. Its governing system is expressed by nonlinear differential equations to show the double Duffing effect. To investigate the dynamic behavior and characteristics, we normalize the system of the model in terms of space and time. The equilibrium points of the system unloaded or symmetrically loaded are calculated exactly. Furthermore, the stability of these points via the roots of the characteristic equation of a Jacobian matrix are classified.
An alternative inverse feedback structure for adaptive active control of periodic noise is introduced for systems with nonminimum phase cancellation path. To obtain the inverse model of the nonminimum phase cancellation path, the cancellation path model can be factorized into a minimum phase term and a maximum phase term. The maximum phase term containing unstable zeros makes the inverse model unstable. To avoid the instability, we alter the inverse model of the maximum phase system into an anti-causal FIR one. An LMS predictor estimates the future samples of the noise, which are necessary for causality of both anti-causal FIR approximation for the stable inverse of the maximum phase system and time-delay existing in the cancellation path. The proposed method has a faster convergence behavior and a better transient response than the conventional filtered-x LMS algorithms with the same internal model control structure since a filtered reference signal is not required. We compare the proposed methods with the conventional methods through simulation studies.
Hot deformation behavior of a carbon steel (A350 LF2) was characterized by compression tests in the temperature range of $800-1250^{\circ}C$ and the strain rate range of $0.001-10s^{-1}$, The microstructural evolution during hot compression was investigated and deformation mechanisms were analyzed by constructing a deformation processing map. Processing maps were generated using the combination of dynamic material model (DMM) and flow instability theories based on the flow stability criteria and Ziegler's instability criterion. In order to evaluate the reliability of the map, the mirostructural characteristics of the hot compressed specimens were correlated with test conditions in the stable and unstable regime. The combined microstructural and processing map of A350 LF2 was applied to predict an optimum condition and unstable regions for hot forming.
Purpose: This study is designed to identify clusters according to the causal attribution that people make about the cancer and to determine influences of coping behavior and depression as output of causal attribution. Method: The subjects were 192 patients who had been diagnosed cancer one year ago and attended an outpatient clinic. For cancer patients to be classified homogenious groups according to causal attribution, cluster analysis of subjects' ratings on the Causal Dimension Scale was been made. Results: Cluster 1(n=71) had patients with having external, stable and uncontrollable attribution. Cluster 2(n =70) had patients with having unstable and external controllable attribution regarding cause of cancer. They were not important whether cause of cancer was self or other. Cluster 3(n=51) had patients with having internal, unstable and internal controllable attribution. Coping behaviors between cluster 1 and 3 were significant difference. However, depression was not significant difference among clusters. Conclusion: Based upon these results, it is recommended that the developing training program to be changed to the more positive attribution is necessary.
This paper presents the induced mathematical modeling equations for evaluating the operation stability with automatic transmission of heavy duty vehicle. This theoretical approach indicates that linearized governing equations of system can be converted into eigen-value problems. if the eigen-value has positive number, we can predict the engine operating point locates an unstable operating region. To be a stable state, the unstable operating point diverges toward a stable point which is able to maintain uniform velocity. Based on the previous theoretical analysis, we carry out dynamic simulation to show the behavior of engine operating point and torque converter in transient state. As a result of the dynamic simulation, the suggested theoretical method is found to be reasonable for evaluating the operation stability of a torque converter. In addition, the numerical results explain the engine stops and fluctuating phenomenon in reality.
An experimental study of the effect of operating conditions on the behavior of a lean premixed laboratory combustor operating on natural gas has been conducted. Measurements were made characterizing the pressure fluctuations in the combustor and the flame structure over a range of inlet temperatures, inlet velocities and equivalence ratios. In addition the fuel distribution at the inlet to the combustor was varied such that it was an independent parameter in the experiment. Inlet temperature, inlet velocity and equivalence ratio were all found to have an effect on the stability characteristics of the combustor. The nature of this effect, however, depended on the fuel distribution. For example, with one fuel distribution the combustor would become unstable when the temperature was increased, whereas with a different fuel distribution the combustor would become unstable when the temperature was decreased. Similarly, the operating conditions had an effect on the flame structure. For example the intensity-weighted center of mass of the flame was found to move closer to the center body as either the temperature or equivalence ratio increased. It was interesting and somewhat surprising to note, however, that as the location of the center of mass changed with operating conditions it did so by moving along a line of constant flame angle.
