Phytochemical Studies on Astragalus Root(1) - Saponins

  • From the 70% EtOH extract of the roots of Astragalus membranaceus (Leguminosae), fifteen saponins were isolated and identified as astragaloside I (1), isoastragaloside II (2), astragaloside II (3), agroastragaloside I (4), cyclogaleginoside B (5), cycloaraloside A (6), brachyoside B (7), agroastragaloside II (8), astragaloside III (9), astragaloside IV (10), astramembranoside A (11), astramembranoside B (12), cylocanthoside E (13), cyclounifolioside B (14) and azukisaponin V methyl ester (15) by spectroscopic methods. Ten compounds 1 - 3, 5 - 7, 9 - 11 and 14 have cycloastragenol as an aglycon, and four compounds 4, 8 , 12, and 13 have cyclocanthogenin as an aglycon. The hairy roots of A. membranaceus were shown to produce previously unreported cycloartane-type saponins such as agroastragalosides I (4) and II (8) and cycloastragenol $3-O-{\beta}-D-xyloside$ (5), together with the known saponins. This is the first report of these saponins (4, 5, and 8) from the intact plant. Although the occurrence of the oleanane-type triterpene saponin, azukisaponin V methyl ester (15), in Astragalus plants has been demonstrated by others, this is the first report of the azukisaponin V methyl ester (15) from the Astragalus plants.

Rhox in mammalian reproduction and development

  • Homeobox genes play essential roles in embryonic development and reproduction. Recently, a large cluster of homeobox genes, reproductive homeobox genes on the X chromosome (Rhox) genes, was discovered as three gene clusters, ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$, and ${\gamma}$ in mice. It was found that Rhox genes were selectively expressed in reproduction-associated tissues, such as those of the testes, epididymis, ovaries, and placenta. Hence, it was proposed that Rhox genes are important for regulating various reproductive features, especially gametogenesis in male as well as in female mammals. It was first determined that 12 Rhox genes are clustered into ${\alpha}$ (Rhox1-4), ${\beta}$ (Rhox5-9), and ${\gamma}$ (Rhox10-12) subclusters, and recently Rhox13 has also been found. At present, 33 Rhox genes have been identified in the mouse genome, 11 in the rat, and three in the human. Rhox genes are also responsible for embryonic development, with considerable amounts of Rhox expression in trophoblasts, placenta tissue, embryonic stem cells, and primordial germ cells. In this article we summarized the current understanding of Rhox family genes involved in reproduction and embryonic development and elucidated a previously unreported cell-specific expression in ovarian cells.

대전지역 야생화에서 분리한 미기록 효모 균주들의 보고 (Note on Newly Isolated Yeasts from Wild Flowers in Daejeon City, Korea)

  • 본 연구에서는 아직까지 한국 진균 학술지에 보고되어 있지 않은 6종의 새로운 효모들의 형태학적, 생리학적 특성에 대하여 보고한다. 이들 효모들은 한국의 대전시에 서식하고 있는 야생화들로부터 분리해서 ITS-2 또는 18S rDNA 염기서열의 분자생물학적 분석 방법을 이용 동정하였다. 이들 6종의 새로운 국내 미기록 효모들은 Kuraishia capsulate, Lodderomyces elongisporus, Pseudozyma antarctica, Starmerella bombicola으로 분리되었다.

  • Curtius reaction을 이용하여 pentanoic acid로부터 DL-1-aminobutylphosphonic acid를 합성하였고, pyruvic acid 로부터 DL-2-carboxyethylphosphonic acid를 합성하였다. 아직 발표된 바 없는 이들의 N-acyl유도체들을 Schotten Bauman방법 등으로 합성하였다. 그 화합물들은 다음과 같다. N-acetyl-DL-1-aminobutylphosphonic acid N-benzoyl-DL-1-aminobutylphosphonic acid N-benzoyl-DL-2-amino-2-carboxyethylphosphonic acid N-p-chlorobenzoyl-DL-2-amino-2-carboxyethylphosphonic acid. 이 유도체들은 원소분석, I${\cdot}$R spectra, ninhydrin test 및 중화당량으로 확인하였다.

A report of 18 unrecorded prokaryotic species isolated from the feces of an Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana), and from the intestinal tracts of a cobitid fish (Kichulchoia multifasciata) and a Korean splendid dace (Coreoleuciscus splendidus)

  • The animal gut is filled with highly diverse microbes associated with host metabolism, physiology, and pathology. However, numerous animal gut microbes have not been cultured or reported. We isolated various bacterial species using culture-dependent approaches during a comprehensive investigation of endangered endemic vertebrate species in the Republic of Korea. A total of 18 unrecorded bacterial species were isolated from the feces of an Oriental stork (Ciconia boyciana), and from the intestinal tracts of a cobitid fish (Kichulchoia multifasciata) and a Korean splendid dace (Coreoleuciscus splendidus). Based on a phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences, we discovered species belonging to the phyla Actinobacteria (eight species), Firmicutes (seven species), Proteobacteria (two species), and Bacteroidetes (one species). Based on their high 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities (>98.7%) and formation of monophyletic clades with type species, each species was classified into an independent and predefined bacterial species. Gram-stain reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, isolation source, and NIBR IDs for each species are described in the species description section.

에멀젼 변환과 에멀젼 전이 (Emulsion Inversion and Emulsion Transition)

  • 에멀젼 구조가 변하는 에멀젼 변환은 이미 40년 전에 알려졌다. 에멀젼 변환에서는 O/W 에멀젼이 W/O 에멀젼으로, 또는 이와 반대로 구조가 변하므로 연석상과 분산상이 서로 바뀌게 된다. 그러나 3상 에멀젼에서는 이와 같은 에멀젼 변환뿐만 아니라 어떤 특정한 온도에서 연속상은 변하지 않고 분산상의 구조가 바뀌는 현상이 관찰되었다. 이 현상을 에멀젼이라고 불렀으며 에멀젼 전이가 일어나는 온도를 에멀젼 전이 온도라고 하였다. 에멀젼 전이는 이론적인 고찰의 결과이었으며 양친매성 분자/기름/물의 두 3성분계에 대해서 실험적으로 관찰하였다. 이는 이제까지 보고되지 않았던 새로운 현상이다. 본 논문에서는 에멀젼 전이와 에멀젼 전이를 비교 분석하였다.

한반도 미기록 식물: 시베리아여뀌(마디풀과) (The First Record of Knorringia sibirica subsp. sibirica (Polygonaceae) in Korea)

  • 인천광역시 옹진군 백령도에서 발견된 마디풀과 미기록속의 1분류군을 한반도 미기록종으로 보고한다. 이 분류군은 지금까지 시베리아, 몽고 및 중국일대에 분포하는 것으로 알려지던 Knorringia sibirica (Laxm.) Tzvelev subsp. sibirica로서, 한국명은 종소명의 의미와 기준표본의 채집지를 감안해 '시베리아여뀌'로 부여하였다. 이 분류군에 대한 형태적 특징을 간략히 기재하였고, 도해 및 생태 사진을 제시하였다.

한반도 희귀양치식물 2종의 신분포지 보고 (A short record for the distribution of two rare Korean ferns)

  • 희귀식물 분포연구의 일환으로 조사 과정 중 국내 분포가 명확하지 않고 극히 한정된 지역에 분포하는 양치식물 2종의 신분포지가 확인되었다. 함경도와 강원도에 분포하는 것으로 알려진 보태면마(Dryopteris coreano-montana)가 전남 장성군 입암산에서 확인되었으며, 제주도 남쪽에서 드물게 자라는 난대성 양치식물인 공작지네고사리(Dryopteris decipiens)가 전남 장흥군 천관산에서 발견되었다.

국제해사기구의 IUU 어업 퇴치 기여 및 전망 (The Role of IMO for the Eradication of IUU Fishing)

  • The illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing can be properly regulated only if fishing activities, transhipment and landing of illegally caught fish, and processing of fish at sea involved in it are integrally managed. To do this, flag States, port States, coastal States, market States and relevant regional fisheries management organizations shall closely cooperate. In addition, fishing boats involved in IUU fishing often ignore requirements of safety of navigation so that they could be exposed to more causes of incidents and could have less chances to be rescued. Then, it seems to be necessary for the regulation on IUU fishing to include a certain consideration of strengthening safety of those ships. International Maritime Organization(IMO) has developed and implemented international rules for the safety of shipping. IMO has cooperated with Food and Agricultural Organization on IUU fishing since 2000 and the third joint meeting is scheduled in November 2015. This paper reviews the recommendations adopted in the previous meetings, and the measures actually taken as a result of the cooperation and, in particular, focus on the additional roles of IMO for the eradication of the IUU fishing.
