Suggestion on Korean Name of Echinochloa oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger and E. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch (논 잡초 Echinochloa oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger와 E. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch의 국명 설정에 대한 제안)

  • Echinochloa oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch is one of major troublesome weeds in the paddy fields in Korea. The Korean name and scientific name of the species has been controversial among researchers. The Korean names 'Nonpee' and 'Gangpee' are being used interchangeably and the application of its scientific name is being confused. The committee composed of the Korea National Arboretum and the Korean Society of Plant Taxonomists has agreed in the use of 'Nonpee' as the Korean name. Therefore, we suggest to use the agreed name of the species for researchers to avoid confusion. In addition, the application of scientific names is also confused with E. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch and E. oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger. E. oryzicola (Vasinger) Vasinger should be applied to the known 'Nonpee' and E. oryzoides (Ard.) Fritsch should be applied to the unrecorded 'Nadononpee' discovered in Masan, Gyeongsangnam-do.

Distribution and Taxonomy of Entomopathogenic Fungal Species from Korea (한국에서 채집된 동충하초의 분포와 분류)

  • Thirty three entomopathogenic species belonging to twelve genus were collected throughout 16 collecting sites from 1990 to 1996. Among those collected species, 14 unrecorded species such as Cordyceps bifusispora, C. martialis, C. oxycephala, C. paludosa, C. pentatomi, C. rosea, C. ryogamiensis, Shimizuomyces paradoxa, Akanthomyces aculeatus, Polycephalomyces ramosus, Tilachlidiopsis nigra were added to Korean entomopathogenic species through this study. In nature, occurrence of Cordyceps nutans, C. sphecocephala and Paecilomyces tenuipes were from early June to late September. On the other hand, C. militaris, C. kyushuensis and C. pruinosa were mainly found from mid July to mid August when relative humidity are increased. Nine species of the genus Cordyceps including C. bifusispora and four deuteromycetous species were isolated. As a result of cultural test using six Cordyceps species, anamorph of C. militaris, C. kyushuensis were proved as Verticillium sp. C. pruinosa as Acremonium sp., C. sphecocephala as Hymenostilbe sp. and C. scarabaeicola as Beauveria sp., respectively.

Two unrecorded naturalized plants in Korea: Stachys agraria and Dracocephalum moldavica (Lamiaceae) (한반도 미기록 귀화식물: 애기석잠풀과 향용머리)

  • Two unrecorded naturalized species, Stachys agraria Schltdl. & Cham. and Dracocephalum moldavica L (Lamiaceae), are newly reported in Korea. Stachys agraria and D. moldavica were found at Seogwipo-si on Jeju-do and at ChunChen-si in Gangwondo in Korea, respectively. Stachys agraria is distinguished from other related Korean taxa by corolla of 2.4-5.2 mm long with six to twelve flowers in the node. Its local name is "Ae-gi-seok-jam-pul" based on shorter than longer corollar. Dracocephalum moldavica was distinguishable from other Dracocephalum in Korea by the following combination of characters, oblong to ovate-triangular ($1.7-2.4cm{\times}0.8-1.2cm$) leaves and rough crenate at the margin. This taxon is referred to as 'Hyang-yong-meo-ri' in Korean based on its fragrance. We provide a description, illustrations, photographs, and a key of related taxa in Korea.

First Record of Largescale Mullet, Chelon macrolepis (Mugiliformes: Mugilidae) from Jeju Island, Korea (한국 숭어과(Mugilidae) 어류 1 미기록종, Chelon macrolepis)

  • Two specimens of Chelon macrolepis were collected from southern coastal waters of Jeju Island and Busan in February 2007 and October 2010, and it, herein, described as an unrecorded species from Korea. Chelon macrolepis is characterized by posterior tip of maxilla exposed when mouth closed, having 31~32 lateral line scales, and 23~24 vertebrae. The new Korean name is proposed as "Keun-bi-neul-sung-eo" for Chelon macrolepis.

  • Through a floral study and resource investigation of Korean mushrooms during the year 1993, five species of Agaricales, Pseudoclitocybe cyathiformis (Bull.: Fr.) Sing.; Pholiota brunnescens A.H. Smith & K. Hesler; Coprinus angulatus Peck; Rhodophyllus bisporus Hongo; Suillus viscidipes Hongo and one form of Gasteromycetes, Lysurus mokusin (L.: Pers.) Fr.f. sinensis (Lloyd) Kobayashi, were found and described new to Korean flora. Pseudoclitocybe is described as an unrecorded genus to Korea. The color names cited are from Kornerup & Wanscher's Methuen Handbook of Colour (1984). All the specimens are deposited in the RDAGB's and ASIK's herbarium.

A new record of Carex (Cyperaceae) to Korean flora: Carex benkei T. Shimizu (한국 사초속(사초과)의 미기록 식물: 긴화살사초)

  • An unrecorded species, Carex benkei T. Shimizu, was found in Is. Jaewondo, Jaewon-ri, Imja-myeon, Sinan-gun, Jeollanam-do and Dongbaik-dongsan, Seonheul-ri, Jocheon-eup, Jeju-si, Is. Jeju-do, South Korea. C. benkei is closely related to C. transversa Boott and C. brownii Tuck., and C. benkei is distingushied from the pistillate scales length, excluding the awn, similar to the achene and the beak of the achene with an annular appendage. A new Korean name, 'Gin-Hwa-Sal-Sa-Cho', was given based on its long pistillate scales excluding the awn compared with Carex transversa Boott. We provide here its redescription, illustrations, photographs, and a key to species of the sect. Confertiflorae Franch. ex Ohwi.

Two new naturalized species from Korea, Glyceria declinata Bréb. and Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. (한국 미기록 벼과 귀화식물: 유럽육절보리풀과 처진미꾸리광이)

  • Two naturalized species, Glyceria declinata $Br{\acute{e}}b$. and Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. are herein newly reported from Korea. Glyceria declinata, 'Yu-Reop-Yuk-Jeol-Bo-Ri-Pul', was found along the Seomjin River, Gurye-eup, Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, as well as along the Gwangjucheon River, Sa-dong, Dong-gu, Gwangju. It is distinguished from G. acutiflora by spikelets 15-20mm long and obtuse lemma. Puccinellia distans, "Cheo-Jin-Mi-Kku-Ri-Gwang-I", was found in Yeongjong Island, Incheon, Yongyu Island, Incheon and Chojijin, Ganghwa-gun. It is distinguished from P. nipponica by lemmas 1.8-2.5mm long, ligule 1-2mm long and the lower branches of panicle usually reflexed after anthesis.

First record of Myriophyllum oguraense Miki (Haloragaceae) in Korea (한반도 미기록식물: 긴동아물수세미)

  • Here we report a previously unrecorded species of Korean Myriophyllum L. (Haloragaceae). This taxon, M. oguraense Miki has been regarded as a Japanese endemic for some 60 years. Myriophyllum oguraense and its closely related M. verticillatum L. share the characteristic of having pectinate emergent leaves that are similar in shape to, but much smaller than, the submerged leaves. However, the primary characteristic that differentiates these taxa is the turion shape (club shaped in M. verticillatum and linear in M. oguraense). The common name, 'Gin-dong-a-mul-su-sae-mi' was also newly given considering its characteristic turion shape. Photographs and a key to Korean Myriophyllum species are provided in addition to complete descriptions including information on nomenclatural types, distributions and specimens examined.

Floristics of bryophytes in Dongbaek-dongsan at Seonheul Gotjawal (선흘 곶자왈 동백동산의 선태식물상 연구)

  • This study presents a survey on the bryophytes in Dongbaek-dongsan located at Seonheul Gotjawal on the north-eastern face of Mt. Halla in Jeju Island, Korea. A total of 85 taxa belonging to the Bryophyta (22 families 44 genera 62 species), Marchantiophyta (12 families 16 genera 23 species) were found. Among them, 3 moss species, Diphyscium perminutum Takaki, Racomitrium japonicum Dozy & Molk., and Isopterygium minutirameum (M$\ddot{u}$. Hal.) A. Jaeger. were new additions to the bryophyte flora of Korea. The liverwort index was 27.0%. Predominant life-form was weft. The rates for the bryophytes dominating in mesic to hygric sites were higher than for the bryophytes mainly observed in xeric habitats. We considered that the composition and distribution of species are affected by the different environmental factors according to the evergreen broad-leaved forests, wetlands and exposed spaces. Moreover, the rocks were the substrate type that play a major role in providing the micro-habitats for bryophytes in this area. Particularly, the bryophytes of swamps in this area were very unique and various for its limited space and showed plant communities with mosaic spatial pattern, along with vascular plants. We suggest more detailed and comprehensive studies on the swamps where endemic fern Mankyua chejuense B. -Y. Sun, M. H. Kim & C. H. Kim inhabits to provide valuable information for the conservation and restoration of the species and habitats.

Two Newly Naturalized Species in Korea: Lolium rigidum Gaudin (Poaceae) and Oenothera rosea L'Hér. ex Aiton (Onagraceae) (한반도 미기록 귀화식물: 댕돌보리와 애기분홍낮달맞이꽃)

  • Two unrecorded naturalized species, Lolium rigidum Gaudin (Poaceae) and Oenothera rosea L'H$\acute{e}$r. ex Aiton (Onagraceae) were newly reported in Korea. L. rigidum, 'Daeng-Dol-Bo-Ri', was found at roadside of Yesong beach, Yesong-ri, Bogil-myeon, and roadside of Myeongsasimni beach, Sin-ri, Sinji-myeon, in Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do. It was distinguished from L. mutiflorum Lam by spikelet 10-20 mm long, florets 2-10(-13), and obtuse lemma, awn absent or up to 3-8(-10) mm. O. rosea, 'Ae-Ki-Bun-Hong-Nat-Dal-Mat-I-Kkot', was found in side of Wondong wetland, Yongdang-ri, Wondong-myeon, Yangsan-si, Gyeongsangnam-do. This taxon was distinguishable from other Oenothera in Korea by following combination of characters, stem erect to ascending, petal 5-12 mm long, pink to bright purple. Descriptions and illustrations of the two taxa and their photographs in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of Lolium and Oenothera from Korea.
