  • Two unrecorded marine nematode species, belonging to genus Paracanthonchus Micoletzky, 1924, are described on the basis of the specimens collected from rocky intertidal seagrass bed on the eastern coast of Korea. Paracanthonchus macrodon (Ditlevsen, 1918) is characterized by presence of cuticular differentiation, strongly dilated gubernaculum with numerous cusps, three post-cloacal setae, and arrangement of six (4+2) precloacal supplement. Paracanthonchus kamui Kito, 1981 is distinguished from other species of the genus by having the 4.25 turns amphideal fovea, six tubular supplement, rib-shaped gubernaculums with proximally hook-shaped and distally broaden. In this study, we provide taxonomic description and illustration of two unrecorded species of the genus Paracanthonchus by differential interference contrast microscopy. This is the first report on the species of the genus Paracanthonchus from Korea.

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil of Gyeongju city, and Haemadipsa rjukjuana of Gageodo Island, characterizing unrecorded yeast strains from Korea. The molecular analysis of the D1/D2 domain of 26S rDNA of yeast was performed using the Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). No official report exists describing these three species: one species in the genus Candida, one species in the genus Debaryomyces, and one species in the genus Solicoccozyma. Candida saitoana YL9, Debaryomyces fabryi YL1, and Solicoccozyma terrea 20g9-1 are recorded for the first time from Korea. All three strains were oval shaped and polar binding, while positive for glucose, ᴅ-xylose, and ᴅ-cellobiose. Morphological, physiological, and biochemical properties are described in the species descriptions.

  • The goal of this study was to isolate and identify the wild yeast strains in intestine of Othius punctulatus collected in Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do, Korea and characterize their unrecored yeast strains. We isolated 16 wild yeast strains from 5 intestine samples from Othius punctulatus. The 16 wild yeast strains were included three strains in the genus Aureobasidium, four strains in the genus Cystofilobasidium, one strain in the genus Mrakia, three strains in the genus Naganishia, two strains in the genus Saitozyma, two strains in the genus Sampaiozyma and one strain in the genus Scheffersomyces. Among them Cystofilobasidium capitatum YP53, Cystofilobasidium capitatum YP71, Cystofilobasidium macerans YS620, Cystofilobasidium macerans YS622, Mrakia aquatica YP158 and Scheffersomyces stipitis YI5 were recorded for the first time in Korea. The microbiological characteristics and carbon assimilation of these previously unrecorded yeasts were investigated. Almost all of them were oval-shaped. And, glycerol, L-arabinose, xylitol, and inositol are not utilized.

  • A total of 38 bacterial strains within the classes Bacilli and Deinococci were isolated from various sources in Korea. Samples were collected from animal intestine, urine, soil, tidal flat mud, and kimchi. In the sequence comparison and phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA sequences, the 38 isolates were assigned to the classes Bacilli and Deinococci with sequence similarities more than 98.7%. Twenty-four strains and 13 strains were classified the order Bacillales and Lactobacillales in the class Bacilli, respectively. In the order Bacillales, there were nine species in the genus Bacillus, seven species in the genus Paenibacillus, and the remaining eight species in the genera Domibacillus, Halobacillus, Virgibacillus, Lysinibacillus, Paenisporosarcina, Planococcus, Savagea, and Staphylococcus. In the order Lactobacillales, there were four species in the genus Lactobacillus, three species in the genus Leuconostoc, three species in the genus Lactococcus, and the remaining three species in the genera Aerococcus, Enterococcus, and Streptococcus. One species was related to the genus Deinococcus of the order Deinococcales. Most of the isolated strains were Gram-stain-positive, but some were Gram-stain-variable or Gram-stain-negative. Cells were rod or cocci-shaped. Based on the results of 16S rRNA analysis, we report 38 strains as previously unrecorded species to Korea, and the basic characteristics of strains are described herein.

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil collected in Daegu City and Cheongyang County, Republic of Korea. Among 11 strains isolated in this study, nine strains were previously reported and two strains were unreported in Republic of Korea. To identify wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of the D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation test are done using API 20C AUX kit. All strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. Of the two unrecorded yeast strains, CY-9-10C belongs to the genus Mrakia (family Mrakiaceae, order Cystofilobasidiales, class Tremellomycetes) and PG3-4-10C belongs to the genus Slooffia (family Chrysozymaceae, order Microbotryomycetes incertae sedis, class Microbotryomycetes). Both strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. This research described the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that had not officially reported in Korea.

  • During an investigation of unrecorded prokaryotic species in Korea, six unrecorded bacterial strains were isolated from soil samples collected from Uljin-gun. Based on a similarity search using the 16S rRNA gene sequence of the isolated strains and the construction of the neighbor-joining phylogenetic tree, five strains were identified to the genus Pseudomonas of the family Pseudomonadaceae, while one strain was identified as a species belonging to the genus Paenibacillus of the family Paenibacillaceae. The details of these unreported species, including gram staining reaction, colony and cell morphology, basic biochemical characteristics, strain ID, and isolation source, are described in the description of the strains.

  • Two species of the Korean Agaricales are described and illustrated in this paper. Two genera Cystoagaricus and Limacella are new to Korean agaric flora. All of these, Cystoagaricus strobilomyces and Limacella glioderma are recorded for the first time in the Korean fungus flora. The collections cited are all preserved in the Herbarium Conservation Center of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences.
