A 3-D localization method of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) has been developed, which can solve the limitations oj the conventional localization, such as LBL or SBL that reduces the flexibility and availability of the AUV. The system is composed of a mother ship (small unmanned marine prober) on the surface of the water and an unmanned underwater vehicle in the water. The mother ship is equipped with a digital compass and a GPS for position information, and an extended Kalman filter is used for position estimation. For the localization of the AUV, we used only non-inertial sensors, such as a digital compass, a pressure sensor, a clinometer, and ultrasonic sensors. From the orientation and velocity information, a priori position of the AUV is estimated by applying the dead reckoning method. Based on the extended Kalman filter algorithm, a posteriori position of the AUV is, then, updated by using the distance between the AUV and a mother ship on the surface of the water, together with the depth information from the pressure sensor.

In order to successfully detect and identify underwater targets located on the seabed, unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) typically acquire acoustic signals with a side-scan sonar device and reconstruct information about the target from the processed images. As the quality of the side-scan sonar images acquired by USVs depends on the environment and operating parameters, using modeling and simulation techniques to design side-scan sonar devices can help optimize the reconstruction of the sonar images. In this work, we study a side-scan sonar design for use in USVs, that takes the movement of the platform into account. First, we constructed a simulated seabed environment with underwater targets, and specified the maneuvering conditions and sonar systems. We then generated the acoustic signals from the simulated environment using the sonar equation. Finally, we successfully imaged the simulated seabed environment using simple signal processing. Our results can be used to derive USV side-scan sonar design parameters, predict the resulting sonar images in various conditions, and as a basis for determining the optimal sonar parameters of the system.

This study is about development of technology system for an advanced deep-sea unmanned underwater robot of S. Korea analysed by the application of scenario planning. It was developed a 6000m class next-generation deep-sea unmanned underwater vehicle(or robot, UUV) system, soonly ROV 'Hemire' and Depressor 'Henuvy' in 2006 at S. Korea and motion control, adaptive control algolithm, a work-space manipulator control algolithm, especially the underwater inertial-acoustic navigation system robust to initial errors and sensor failures. But there are remained matters on position tracking of the USBL, inertial-acoustic navigation system, attitude sensor, designed sonar sensors. So this study suggest the new idea for settle the matters and then this idea help the development of the underwater inertial-acoustic navigation system robust to initial errors and sensor failures, such as acoustic signal drop-out, by modifying the error covariance of the failed sonar signal when drop-out occurs. As a result, the future policy for deep-sea unmanned underwater robot of S. Korea is to further spur the development of new technology and more improvement of the technology level for deep-sea unmanned underwater robot system with indicator and imaginary wall as external device.
Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are unmanned, underwater vessels that are used to investigate sea environments in the study of oceanography. Docking systems are required to increase the capability of the AUVs, to recharge the batteries, and to transmit data in real time for specific underwater works, such as repented jobs at sea bed. This paper presents a visual :em control system used to dock an AUV into an underwater station. A camera mounted at the now center of the AUV is used to guide the AUV into dock. To create the visual servo control system, this paper derives an optical flow model of a camera, where the projected motions of the image plane are described with the rotational and translational velocities of the AUV. This paper combines the optical flow equation of the camera with the AUVs equation of motion, and deriver a state equation for the visual servo AUV. Further, this paper proposes a discrete-time MIMO controller, minimizing a cost function. The control inputs of the AUV are automatically generated with the projected target position on the CCD plane of the camera and with the AUVs motion. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the modeling and the control law of the visual servo AUV simulations on docking the AUV to a target station are performed with the 6-dof nonlinear equations of REMUS AUV and a CCD camera.
Underwater vehicles such as UUVs (Unmanned Underwater Vehicles) and ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles) use sonar to detect their underwater environment or other underwater vehicles. The underwater vehicles designed recently have an electrical power system with high rotational speed. This system can generate high frequency vibrations above 10 kHz, and these vibrations can cause bad (negative) effects on the performance of the sonar. In many previous investigations, numerical analyses have been used for high frequency vibration problems. In this study, an experimental analysis was carried out, and a circular cylindrical shell was considered as the hull structure of an underwater vehicle. Frequency transfer functions for the circular cylindrical shell were identified using an experimental vibration analysis in the air and in a fully-submerged condition. We compare the frequency transfer functions in the air and water to obtain hydro-elastic effects. It is found that the dynamic characteristics of the circular cylindrical shell are changed by varying the response position.

This paper describes the development and field experiments of Manta-type Unmanned Underwater Vehicle (UUV). Various simulations for Manta UUV are performed by using the nonlinear 6-DOF motion of equations. Through this simulation we verified the motion performances of Manta UUV. To acquire the blueprint of Manta UUV, it was designed with the simulation results. The Manta UUV uses a Doppler Velocity Log (DVL), gyrocompass, GPS, pressure sensor and other minor sensors, applied to measure the motion, position and path of Manta UUV. For its propulsion and changing a direction in the underwater, one vertical fin and four horizontal fins are installed at the hull of UUV. The Manta UUV system was verified with motion and autonomous navigation test at field.

This paper presents a hybrid underwater navigation system for unmanned underwater vehicles, using an additional range sonar, where the navigation system is based on inertial and Doppler velocity sensors. Conventional underwater navigation systems are generally based on an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a Doppler velocity log (DVL), accompanying a magnetic compass and a depth sensor. Although the conventional navigation systems update the bias errors of inertial sensors and the scale effects of DVL, the estimated position slowly drifts as time passes. This paper proposes a measurement model that uses the range sonar to improve the performance of the IMU-DVL navigation system, for extended operation of underwater vehicles. The proposed navigation model includes the bias errors of IMU, the scale effects of VL, and the bias error of the range sonar. An extended Kalman filter was adopted to propagate the error covariance, to update the measurement errors, and to correct the state equation, when the external measurements are available. To illustrate the effectiveness of the hybrid navigation system, simulations were conducted with the 6-d.o.f. equations of motion of an AUV in lawn-mowing survey mode.
This paper compares methods for attitude estimation of a UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). Attitude estimation plays a key role in underwater navigation using DVL(Doppler Velocity Log). The paper proposes attitude estimation methods using EKF(Extended Kalman Filter), UKF(Unscented Kalman Filter), and CF(Complementary Filter). It derives methods using the measurements from MEMS-AHRS(Microelectromechanical Systems-Attitude Heading Reference System) and DVL. The methods are used for navigation in a test pool and their navigation performance is compared. The results suggest that even if there is no measurement relative to some absolute landmarks, DVL-only navigation can be useful for navigation in a limited time and range.

An AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) is an unmanned underwater vessel to investigate sea environments and deep sea resource. To be completely autonomous, AUV must have the ability to home and dock to the launcher. In this paper, we consider a class of homing trajectory planning problem for an AUV with kinematic and tactical constraints in horizontal plane. Since the AUV under consideration has underactuated characteristics, trajectory for this kind of AUV must be designed considering the underactuated characteristics. Otherwise, the AUV cannot follow the trajectory. Proposed homing trajectory panning method that called VGM (Virtual Goal Method) based on visibility graph takes the underactated characteristics into consideration. And it guarantees shortest collision free trajectory. For tracking control, we propose a PD controller by simple guidance law. Finally, we validate the trajectory planning algorithm and tracking controller by numerical simulation and ocean engineering basin experiment in KORDI.

Underwater acoustic sensor array can detect acoustic signal in underwater and the sensor array can be mounted in each left, right or front side of the UUV(Unmanned Underwater Vehicle). The sensor array could be conformal array and effected turbulent boundary layer flow noise. Therefore, in this paper numerical simulations were performed to know the how the outer flow noise affect the hydrophone which embedded in the elastomer. Corcos wall pressure model was used as turbulent boundary layer flow noise and this model was applied to the frequency density function. Characteristics of transfer function according the kx wave number were simulated and design parameters were thickness of elastomer, density, and modulus of elasticity. Based on the simulation results when increasing the thickness of elastomer noise reduction was increased. This results can be applied to the design of conformal array of UUV.
