Nowadays unmanned ground systems are used in supporting of surveillance and explosive ordnance disposal. Also, we expect that will be used to remarkably enhance combat capability through network-based cooperative operations with other combat systems. In order to effectively develop those unmanned systems, we needs a systematic method to analyze combat effectiveness and validate required operation capabilities. In this paper, we propose a practical approach to simulate remote-operated unmanned ground systems by using OneSAF, an US-Army simulation framework. First of all, we design a simulation model of unmanned system by integrating with core components for wireless communications and remote control of mobility and fire. Next, we extend OneSAF functionality to create communication links that connects a remote controller with an unmanned vehicle and define a simulated behavior to operate unmanned vehicles via the communication links. Finally, we demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed model within OneSAF and summarize system effectiveness analysis results.

This paper describes an obstacle detecting system of an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV). The unmanned ground vehicle is consists of several systems such as vehicle control system, navigation system, obstacle detecting system and integration system. Among these systems, the obstacle detecting system is a driving assistance system of UGV. Through the UGV is driving, the system detects obstacles such as cars, human, tree, curb and hills and then send information of obstacles position to integration system for safety driving. In this research, the obstacle detecting system is composed of 5 laser scanners and develop algorithms of detecting obstacles, curb, uphill and downhill road.

In this paper, a precision landing approach is implemented based on real-time image processing. A full-scale landmark for automatic landing is used. canny edge detection method is applied to identify the outside quadrilateral while circular hough transform is used for the recognition of inside circle. Position information on the ground landmark is uplinked to the unmanned helicopter via ground control computer in real time so that the unmanned helicopter control the air vehicle for accurate landing approach. Ground test and a couple of flight tests for autonomous landing approach show that the image processing and automatic landing operation system have good performance for the landing approach phase at the altitude of $20m{\sim}1m$ above ground level.

An unmanned ground vehicle can perform its mission automatically without human control in unknown environment. To move up to a destination in various surrounding situation, navigational information is indispensible. In order to be adopted for an unmanned vehicle, the navigation box is small, light weight and low power consumption. This paper suggests navigation system using a low grade MEMS IMU for supplying position, velocity, and attitude of an unmanned ground vehicle. This system consists of low cost and light weight MEMS sensors and a GPS receiver to meet unmanned vehicle requirements. The sensors are basically integrated by loosely coupled method using Kalman filter and internal algorithms are divided into initial alignment, sensor error compensation, and complex navigation algorithm. The performance of the designed navigation system has been analyzed by real time field test and compared to commercial tactical grade GPS/INS system.

The use of unmanned combat systems is of interest for future battlefield. Advanced techniques are being actively studied to build fully autonomous unmanned systems. However, there are technical, ethical and legal limitations for the fully autonomous unmanned combat systems. In addition, a remote controlled system is necessary so far in order to prepare for situations where fully autonomous unmanned systems fail to function properly. Thus, a procedure of developing operational requirements in system level is proposed and interface requirements of unmanned combat vehicles for remote control are described in this study.

In the midst of the development of science and technology based on the 4th industrial revolution, the ROK Army is moving forward with the ARMY TIGER 4.0 system, a ground combat system that combines future advanced science and technology. The system is developing around an AI-based hyper-connected ground combat system, and has mobility, intelligence, and networking as core concepts. Especially, the dronebot combat system is used as a compound word that refers to unmanned combat systems including drones and ground unmanned systems. In future battlefields, it is expected that the use of unmanned and artificial intelligence-based weapon systems will increase. During the transition to a complete unmanned system, it is a very important issue to ensure connectivity individual unmanned systems themselves or between manned and unmanned systems on the battlefield. This paper introduces the Multiplexer Allocation Problem (MAP) for effective command control and communication of UAV/UGV, and proposes a heuristic algorithm. In addition, the performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by comparing the solutions and computing time. Also, we discuss future research area for the MAP.

This paper deals with the peer-to-peer data communication to connect each distributed levels of developed unmanned system according to the JAUS. The JAUS is to support the acquisition of unmanned system by providing a mechanism for reducing system life-cycle costs. Each of distributed levels of the JAUS protocol divides into a system, some of subsystems, nodes and components/instances, each of which may be independent or interdependence. We have to distribute each of the levels because high performance is supported in order to create several sub-processor computing data in one processor with high CPU speed performance. To complement such disadvantage, we must think the concept that a distributed processing agrees with separating each of levels from the JAUS protocol. Therefore, each of distributed independent levels send data to another level and then it has to be able to process the received data in other levels. So, peer-to-peer communication has to control a data flow of distributed levels. In this research, we explain each of levels of the JAUS and peer-to-peer communication structure among the levels using our developed unmanned ground vehicle.

In this paper, an effective path generation algorithm for obstacle avoidance producing small amount of steering action as possible is proposed. The proposed path generation algorithm can reduce unnecessary steering because of the small lateral changes in generated waypoints when UGV (Unmanned Ground Vehicle) encounters obstacles during its waypoint navigation. To verify this, the proposed algorithm and $A^*$ algorithm are analyzed through the simulation. The proposed algorithm shows good performance in terms of lateral changes in the generated waypoint, steering changes of the vehicle while driving and execution speed of the algorithm. Especially, due to the fast execution speed of the algorithm, the obstacles that encounter suddenly in front of the vehicle within short range can be avoided. This algorithm consider the waypoint navigation only. Therefore, in certain situations, the algorithm may generate the wrong path. In this case, a general path generation algorithm like $A^*$ is used instead. However, these special cases happen very rare during the vehicle waypoint navigation, so the proposed algorithm can be applied to most of the waypoint navigation for the unmanned ground vehicle.

Recognition of structures in urban environments is a fundamental ability for unmanned ground vehicles. In this paper we propose the geometrical featured voxel which has not only 3-D coordinates but also the type of geometrical properties of point cloud. Instead of dealing with a huge amount of point cloud collected by range sensors in urban, the proposed voxel can efficiently represent and save 3-D urban structures without loss of geometrical properties. We also provide an urban structure classification algorithm by using the proposed voxel and machine learning techniques. The proposed method enables to recognize urban environments around unmanned ground vehicles quickly. In order to evaluate an ability of the proposed map representation and the urban structure classification algorithm, our vehicle equipped with the sensor system collected range data and pose data in campus and experimental results have been shown in this paper.

For effective mobility control of unmanned ground vehicles in outdoor off-road environments, terrain cover classification technology using passive sensors is vital. This paper presents a novel method far terrain classification based on color and texture information of off-road images. It uses a neural network classifier and wavelet features. We exploit the wavelet mean and energy features extracted from multi-channel wavelet transformed images and also utilize the terrain class spatial coordinates of images to include additional features. By comparing the classification performance according to applied features, the experimental results show that the proposed algorithm has a promising result and potential possibilities for autonomous navigation.
