Epidemiological Aspects of Pathogenic Microbial Foodborne Disease Outbreaks in Korea and Japan, 1999-2004

  • Pathogenic microbial foodborne disease outbreaks (PMFBDOs) have increased in many countries, the boom in food service establishment is not matched by effective food safety and control. In this study, we investigated the current state and the epidemic aspects of FBDOs in Korea and Japan. In Korea, the average prevalence rate of foodborne disease (FBD) was 15.0 per 100,000 population and cases per outbreak of FBD was 57.0. During the same period in Japan, the prevalence rate showed an average of 24.9, and the cases per outbreak were 16. When both prevalence rate and cases per outbreak were compared, the prevalence rate in Japan was much higher than that in Korea (p<0.01). However, average cases per outbreak of FBD in Japan were much lower than those in Korea (p<0.01). In Korea, outbreaks of FBDs were more common in spring (p<0.01), while in Japan, more frequent in summer and winter (p<0.01). Outbreaks of FBD occurred largely through restaurant and school foods (32.0% and 27.5%) in Korea. In Japan, the proportion of the outbreak cases in the restaurant and home were 23.7% and 12.1%, and cases of unknown causes of FBDs were 48.2%, respectively. Bacteria were the major causes of infection in both countries. The prevalence of PMFBDOs by Salmonella spp. Vibrio parahemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus were much higher in Korea, while those by Camphylobacter spp. and SRSV were more common in Japan. The causes by virus were more frequent in Japan (13.7%) than in Korea (7.7%). The prevalence of FBDs in Korea and Japan showed characteristic differences, especially in the PMFBDOs due to such factors as geography, climate, culture, diet and food management.

HSV-1 ICP27 represses NF-κB activity by regulating Daxx sumoylation

  • Herpes simplex virus type 1 ICP27 is a multifunctional protein responsible for viral replication, late gene expression, and reactivation from latency. ICP27 interacts with various cellular proteins, including Daxx. However, the role of interaction between ICP27 and Daxx is largely unknown. Since Daxx is known to repress $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity, there is a possibility that ICP27 may influence the inhibitory effect of Daxx on $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity. In this study, we tested whether ICP27 affects the $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity through its interaction with Daxx. Interestingly, ICP27 enhanced the Daxx-mediated repression of $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity. In addition, we found that sumoylation of Daxx regulates its interaction with p65. ICP27 binds to Daxx, inhibits Daxx sumoylation, and enhances p65 deacetylation induced by Daxx. Consequently, ICP27 represses the $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity, by elevating the inhibitory effect of Daxx on $NF-{\kappa}B$ activity through desumoylation of Daxx.

  • Our PC have been under constant threat of malicious codes and viruses today. As many new ways of cyber attacks are being developed, such as zero-day-attack, nobody's PC is guaranteed to be safe from the attacks. In case where a user uses the existing verification protocol on a unsecured PC, the user's verification information may well be threatened by sniffing or man-in-the-middle attack. Especially, deadly attacks like memory hacking would give hard time for users to even recognize any symptom of virus infection. Therefore, this paper designs secured QR-Login user verification protocol for smart devices that are ready to communicate with QR-Code and proposes a way to keep critical data safe when using the internet. This way, user would be able to safeguard his/her critical data even when under attack by unknown attacks and safely carry out extremely sensitive task, like financial trading, on the device.

Perinatal outcome and possible vertical transmission of coronavirus disease 2019: experience from North India

  • Background: The consequences of severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 on mother and fetus remain unknown due to a lack of robust evidence from prospective studies. Purpose: This study evaluated the effect of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on neonatal outcomes and the scope of vertical transmission. Methods: This ambispective observational study enrolled pregnant women with COVID-19 in North India from April 1 to August 31, 2020 to evaluate neonatal outcomes and the risk of vertical transmission. Results: A total of 44 neonates born to 41 COVID-19-positive mothers were evaluated. Among them, 28 patients (68.3%) (2 sets of twins) were delivered within 7 days of testing positive for COVID-19, 23 patients (56%) (2 sets of twins) were delivered by cesarean section; 13 newborns (29.5%) had low birth weight; 7 (15.9%) were preterm; and 6 (13.6%) required neonatal intensive care unit admission, reflecting an increased incidence of cesarean delivery and low birth weight but zero neonatal mortality. Samples of cord blood, placental membrane, vaginal fluid, amniotic fluid, peritoneal fluid (in case of cesarean section), and breast milk for COVID-19 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction tested negative in 22 prospective delivery cases. Nasopharyngeal swabs of 2 newborns tested positive for COVID-19: one at 24 hours and the other on day 4 of life. In the former case, biological samples were not collected as the mother was asymptomatic and her COVID-19 report was available postdelivery; hence, the source of infection remained inconclusive. In the latter case, all samples tested negative, ruling out the possibility of vertical transmission. All neonates remained asymptomatic on follow-up. Conclusion: COVID-19 does not have direct adverse effects on the fetus per se. The possibility of vertical transmission is almost negligible, although results from larger trials are required to confirm our findings.

A Study on Detection of Small Size Malicious Code using Data Mining Method (데이터 마이닝 기법을 이용한 소규모 악성코드 탐지에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the abuse of Internet technology has caused economic and mental harm to society as a whole. Especially, malicious code that is newly created or modified is used as a basic means of various application hacking and cyber security threats by bypassing the existing information protection system. However, research on small-capacity executable files that occupy a large portion of actual malicious code is rather limited. In this paper, we propose a model that can analyze the characteristics of known small capacity executable files by using data mining techniques and to use them for detecting unknown malicious codes. Data mining analysis techniques were performed in various ways such as Naive Bayesian, SVM, decision tree, random forest, artificial neural network, and the accuracy was compared according to the detection level of virustotal. As a result, more than 80% classification accuracy was verified for 34,646 analysis files.

  • Recently, cyberattacks are using hacking techniques utilizing intelligent and advanced malicious codes for non-face-to-face environments such as telecommuting, telemedicine, and automatic industrial facilities, and the damage is increasing. Traditional information protection systems, such as anti-virus, are a method of detecting known malicious URLs based on signature patterns, so unknown malicious URLs cannot be detected. In addition, the conventional static analysis-based malicious URL detection method is vulnerable to dynamic loading and cryptographic attacks. This study proposes a technique for efficiently detecting malicious URLs by dynamically learning malicious URL data. In the proposed detection technique, malicious codes are classified using machine learning-based feature selection algorithms, and the accuracy is improved by removing obfuscation elements after preprocessing using Weighted Euclidean Distance(WED). According to the experimental results, the proposed machine learning-based malicious URL detection technique shows an accuracy of 89.17%, which is improved by 2.82% compared to the conventional method.

Clinical characteristics of Epstein-Barr virus infection detected by polymerase chain reaction in children less than 15 years old (15세 이하의 어린이에서 중합효소 연쇄반응으로 검출된 Epstein-Barr 바이러스 감염의 임상적 특성)

  • Purpose : Previously, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection was diagnosed by serological examination; currently, many EBV antigen detection methods have been developed and applied clinically for diagnosing EBV infection. To delineate the clinical characteristics of EBV infection, clinical and laboratory findings were evaluated for patients who tested positive in EBV polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Methods : EBV PCR was conducted in 352 patients admitted to the pediatric ward from January 2004 to December 2006, with more than 2 clinical signs such as fever (${\geq}37.5^{\circ}C$), exudative throat infection, lymphadenopathy, hepatitis of unknown etiology, and splenomegaly. The EBV viral gene was detected by PCR in 115 patients (32%), and the clinical characteristics of these patients were evaluated. Laboratory findings such as leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, atypical lymphocyte, and alteration in aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels in peripheral blood were examined. The EBV-specific immunoglobulin M antibody (EBV-IgM Ab) was also tested. Results : Most of the children were younger than 8 years (89%), and the male to female ratio was 1.3:1. Exudative throat infection and fever (${\geq}37.5^{\circ}C$) were observed in all patients. Cervical lymph node enlargement was seen in 36 patients (31 %); leukocytosis ($WBC{\geq}10,000/mm^3$), in 54 patients (47%); and atypical lymphocyte (${\geq}20%$), in 28 patients (24%). EBV-IgM Ab was positive in 33 patients (29%). The younger patients had higher ALT levels and higher incidence of positive EBV-IgM Ab than the older patients. Conclusion : The cumulative number of patients diagnosed to have EBV infection by PCR increased markedly for those under 8 years. ALT was higher and EBV-IgM Ab was detected more in younger patients with EBV infection.

Clinical Features of Non-A, B, C Viral Hepatitis in Children (소아에서 발생한 비-A, B, C형 바이러스성 간염의 임상 고찰)

  • Purpose: Non-A, B, C viral hepatitis is the name given to the disease with clinical viral hepatitis, but in which serologic evidence of A, B, C hepatitis has not been found. Little is known about the etiology and clinical features of non-A, B, C viral hepatitis in children. Methods: A clinical analysis of 45 cases with non-A, B, C viral hepatitis who were admitted to the Department of Pediatrics, Pusan National University Hospital, from January 2001 to June 2004 was carried out retrospectively. Patients who were positive for HBsAg, anti-HAV and anti-HCV and had toxic, metabolic, autoimmune, or neonatal hepatitis were excluded in this study. Results: Among 45 cases of non-A, B, C viral hepatitis, the etiology was unknown in 26 (57.8%), CMV (cytomegalovirus) in 14 (31.1%), EBV (Epstein Barr virus) in 2 (4.4%), HSV (herpes simplex virus) in 2 (4.4%) and RV (rubella virus) in 1 (2.2%). Twenty seven out of 45 (60.0%) patients were under 1 year of age. Sixteen (33.3%) patients had no specific clinical symptoms and were diagnosed incidentally. On physical examination, twenty seven out of 45 patients (60.0%) had no abnormal findings. Forty three out of 45 patients (95.6%) showed classic clinical course of acute viral hepatitis, whereas fulminant hepatitis developed in two patients. Mean serum ALT (alanine aminotransferase) level was $448.7{\pm}771.9IU/L$. Serum ALT level was normalized in 31 out of 45 patients (81.6%) within 6 months and all patients within 18 months. Aplastic anemia was complicated in a case. Conclusion: Although most patients with non-A, B, C viral hepatitis showed a good prognosis, a careful follow-up would be necessary because some of them had a clinical course of chronic hepatitis, fulminant hepatitis and severe complication such as aplastic anemia.

Molecular Miology of the Poliovirus (폴리오바이러스의 분자생물학)

  • The poliovirus is a small, and non-enveloped virus. The RNA genome of poliovirus is continuous, linear, and has a single open reading frame. This polyprotein precursor is cleaved proteolytically to yield mature products. Most of the cleavages occur by viral protease. The mature proteins derived from the P1 polyprotein precursor are the structural components of the viral capsid. The initial cleavage by 2A protease is indirectly involved in the cleavage of a cellular protein p220, a subunit of the eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4F. This cleavage leads to the shut-off of cap-dependent host cell translation, and allows poliovirus to utilize the host cell machinery exclusively for translation its own RNA, which is initiated by internal ribosome entry via a cap-independent mechanism. The functional role of the 2B, 2C and 2BC proteins are not much known. 2B, 2C, 2BC and 3CD proteins are involved in the replication complex of virus induced vesicles. All newly synthesized viral RNAs are linked with VPg. VPg is a 22 amino acid polypeptide which is derived from 3AB. The 3C and 3CD are protease and process most of the cleavage sites of the polyprotein precursor. The 3C protein is also involved in inhibition of RNA polymerase II and III mediated transcription by converting host transcription factor to an inactive form. The 3D is the RNA dependent RNA polymerase. It is known that poliovirus replication follows the general pattern of positive strand RNA virus. Plus strand RNA is transcribed into complementary minus strand RNA that, in turn, is transcribed for the synthesis of plus strand RNA is transcribed into complementary minus strand RNA that, in turn, is transcribed for the synthesis of plus strand RNA strands. Poliovirus RNA synthesis occurs in a membranous environment but how the template RNA and proteins required for RNA replication assemble in the membrane is not much known. The RNA requirements for the encapsidation of the poliovirus genome (packaging signal) are totally unknown. The poliovirus infection cycle lasts approximately 6 hours.

Detection of etiologic agents in diarrhea fecal samples from calves in Gyeongnam province, Korea (경남지역에서 송아지 설사병 병원체 검출 조사)

  • The objective of this study was to determine the infection patterns of etiological agents causing calf diarrhea in the Gyeongnam province, Korea. In this study, from January 2011 to December 2011, feces and necropsy specimens from 249 calves diagnosed with diarrhea (<7 months old) were examined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction assay and bacteria & coccidium isolation for detection pathogenic organism. The results of this study showed that 78 cases (31.3%) in spring, 71 cases (28.5) in summer, 62 cases (24.9%) in fall and 38 cases (15.3%) in winter were diagnosed with calf diarrhea, respectively. Calf diarrhea-causing pathogens were diagnosed as bacteria 113 (45.4%), viruses 97 (39.0%), coccidium 1 (0.4%), unknown cases 13 (5.2%), and mixed infections 25 (10.0%). We isolated three virus types from fecal samples (97), which were classified as BVD 64 (66.0%), BRV 21 (21.6%), and BCV 12 (12.4%). Moreover, co-infected pathogens were 25 cases, consisting with BVD & BRV 11 (44%), BVD & BCV& BRV 7 (28.0%), E. coli & BCV 3 (12%), and BVD & IBR 1 (4.0%). In summary, we demonstrated that the enteropathogens of bacteria, viruses, and parasite were detected in samples from cattle with diarrhea, principally in young calves less than 7 months of age. Future studies of infectious diarrhea in cattle should include assays for this etiologic agent.
