  • In this paper, we propose a new intrusion detection model, which keeps advantages of existing misuse detection model and anomaly detection model and resolves their problems. This new intrusion detection system, named to MMIDS, was designed to satisfy all the following requirements : 1) Fast detection of new types of attack unknown to the system; 2) Provision of detail information about the detected types of attack; 3) cost-effective maintenance due to fast and efficient learning and update; 4) incrementality and scalability of system. The fast and efficient training and updating faculties of proposed novel multi-class SVM which is a core component of MMIDS provide cost-effective maintenance of intrusion detection system. According to the experimental results, our method can provide superior performance in separating similar patterns and detailed separation capability of MMIDS is relatively good.

  • At the opening ceremony of 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, an unknown cyber-attack occurred. The malicious code used in the attack is based on in-memory malware, which differs from other malicious code in its concealed location and is spreading rapidly to be found in more than 140 banks, telecommunications and government agencies. In-memory malware accounts for more than 15% of all malicious codes, and it does not store its own information in a non-volatile storage device such as a disk but resides in a RAM, a volatile storage device and penetrates into well-known processes (explorer.exe, iexplore.exe, javaw.exe). Such characteristics make it difficult to analyze it. The most recently released in-memory malicious code bypasses the endpoint protection and detection tools and hides from the user recognition. In this paper, we propose a method to efficiently extract the payload by unpacking injection through IDA Pro debugger for Dorkbot and Erger, which are in-memory malicious codes.

  • As Web services are generally open for external uses and not filtered by Firewall, these result in attacker's target. Web attacks which exploit vulnerable web-applications and malicious users' requests cause economical and social problems. In this paper, we are modelling general web service usages based on user-web-session and detect anomal usages with Bayesian estimation method. Finally we propose SAD(Session Anomaly Detection) for detection unknown web attacks. To evaluate SAD, we made an experiment on attack simulation with web vulnerability scanner, whisker. The results show that the detection rate of SAD is over 90%, which is influenced by several features such as size of window or training set, detection filter method and web topology.

  • The most methods for intrusion detection are based on the misuse detection which accumulates hewn intrusion information and makes a decision of an attack against any behavior data. However it is very difficult to detect a new or modified aoack with only the collected patterns of attack behaviors. Therefore, if considering that the method of anomaly behavior detection actually has a high false detection rate, a new approach is required for very huge intrusion patterns based on sequence. The approach can improve a possibility for intrusion detection of known attacks as well as modified and unknown attacks in addition to the similarity measurement of intrusion patterns. This paper proposes a method which applies the multiple sequence alignments technique to the similarity matching of the sequence based intrusion patterns. It enables the statistical analysis of sequence patterns and can be implemented easily. Also, the method reduces the number of detection alerts and false detection for attacks according to the changes of a sequence size.

  • Security visualization is a form of the data visualization techniques in the field of network security by using security-related events so that it is quickly and easily to understand network traffic flow and security situation. In particular, the security visualization that detects the abnormal situation of network visualizing connections between two endpoints is a novel approach to detect unknown attack patterns and to reduce monitoring overhead in packets monitoring technique. However, the session-based visualization doesn't notice a difference between normal traffic and attacks that they are composed of similar connection pattern. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an efficient session-based visualization method for analyzing and detecting between normal server activities and attacks by using the IP address splitting and port attributes analysis. The proposed method can actually be used to detect and analyze the network security with the existing security tools because there is no dependence on other security monitoring methods. And also, it is helpful for network administrator to rapidly analyze the security status of managed network.

  • RSA is known as one of the best techniques for securing secret information across an unsecured network. The private key which is one of private parameters is the aim for attackers. However, it is exceedingly impossible to derive this value without disclosing all unknown parameters. In fact, many methods to recover the private key were proposed, the performance of each algorithm is acceptable for the different cases. For example, Wiener's attack is extremely efficient when the private key is very small. On the other hand, Fermat's factoring can quickly break RSA when the difference between two large prime factors of the modulus is relatively small. In general, if all private parameters are not disclosed, attackers will be able to confirm that the private key is unquestionably inside the scope [3, n - 2], where n is the modulus. However, this scope has already been reduced by increasing the greatest lower bound to [dil, n - 2], where dil ≥ 3. The aim of this paper is to decrease the least upper bound to narrow the scope that the private key will remain within this boundary. After finishing the proposed method, the new scope of the private key can be allocated as [dil, dir], where dir ≤ n - 2. In fact, if the private key is extremely close to the new greatest lower bound, it can be retrieved quickly by performing a brute force attack, in which dir is decreased until it is equal to the private key. The experimental results indicate that the proposed method is extremely effective when the difference between prime factors is close to each other and one of two following requirement holds: the first condition is that the multiplier of Euler totient function is very close to the public key's small value whereas the second condition is that the public key should be large whenever the multiplier is far enough.

  • The traditional malware detection technologies collect known malicious programs and analyze their characteristics. Then such a detection technology makes a blacklist based on the analyzed malicious characteristics and checks programs in the user's system based on the blacklist to determine whether each program is malware. However, such an approach can detect known malicious programs, but responding to unknown or variant malware is challenging. In addition, since such detection technologies generally monitor all programs in the system in real-time, there is a disadvantage that they can degrade the system performance. In order to solve such problems, various methods have been proposed to analyze major behaviors of malicious programs and to respond to them. The main characteristic of ransomware is to access and encrypt the user's file. So, a new approach is to produce the whitelist of programs installed in the user's system and allow the only programs listed on the whitelist to access the user's files. However, although it applies such an approach, attackers can still perform malicious behavior by performing a DLL(Dynamic-Link Library) injection attack on a regular program registered on the whitelist. This paper proposes a method to respond effectively to attacks using DLL injection.

  • Cyber protection is an activity that protects the information systems we operate from cyber attacks and threats. To know the level of protection of the currently operating cyber protection system, it is necessary to update the current state of attack technology by reflecting the constantly evolving cyber threats and to analyze whether it is possible to respond with the protection function. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze the relationship between the attack procedures and defense types of the cyber kill chain with the defense technology(Mitigation ID) of MITRE and present the cyber protection level for each military unit type with a focus on defensive cyber activities. In the future, it is expected that the level of cyber protection will be improved through real-time analysis of the response capabilities of cyber protection systems operating in the defense sector to visualize the level of protection for each unit, investigate unknown cyber threats, and actively complement vulnerabilities.

  • Vulnerable web applications have been the primary method used by the attackers to spread their malware to a large number of victims. Such attacks commonly make use of malicious links to remotely execute a rather advanced malicious code. The attackers often deploy malwares that utilizes unknown vulnerabilities so-called "zero-day vulnerabilities." The existing computer vaccines are mostly signature-based and thus are effective only against known attack patterns, but not capable of detecting zero-days attacks. To mitigate such limitations of the current solutions, there have been a numerous works that takes a behavior-based approach to improve detection against unknown malwares. However, behavior-based solutions arbitrarily introduced a several limitations that made them unsuitable for real-life situations. This paper proposes an advanced web browser based malicious behavior detection system that solves the problems and limitations of the previous approaches.

  • ATCoP(Abnormal traffic controller based on prediction) is presented to securely support reliable Internet service and to guarantee network survivability, which is deployed in Internet access point. ATCoP is a method to control abnormal traffic that is entering into the network When unknown attack generates excessive traffic, service survivability is guaranteed by giving the priority to normal traffic than abnormal traffic, that is reserving some channels for normal traffic. If the reserved channel number increases, abnormal traffic has lower quality service by ATCoP system and then its service survivability becomes worse. As an analytic result, the proposed scheme maintains the blocking probability of normal traffic on the predefined level in the specific interval of input traffic.
