PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to compare the new bone formation capability of zirconia with those of other synthetic bone grafts. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Twelve rabbits were used and four 6-mm diameter transcortical defects were formed on each calvaria. Each defect was filled with Osteon II (Os), Tigran PTG (Ti), and zirconia (Zi) bone grafts. For the control group, the defects were left unfilled. The rabbits were sacrificed at 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Specimens were analyzed through micro computed tomography (CT) and histomorphometric analysis. RESULTS. The Ti and Zi groups showed significant differences in the amount of newly formed bone between 2 and 4 weeks and between 2 and 8 weeks (P<.05). The measurements of total bone using micro CT showed significant differences between the Os and Ti groups and between the Os and Zi groups at 2 and 8 weeks (P<.05). Comparing by week in each group, the Ti group showed a significant difference between 4 and 8 weeks. Histomorphometric analysis also showed significant differences in new bone formation between the control group and the experimental groups at 2, 4, and 8 weeks (P<.05). In the comparison of newly formed bone, significant differences were observed between 2 and 4 weeks and between 2 and 8 weeks (P<.05) in all groups. CONCLUSION. Zirconia bone graft material showed satisfactory results in new bone formation and zirconia could be used as a new synthetic bone graft material.
Doped-$LaCrO_3$ perovskites, because of their good electrical conductivity and thermal stability in oxidizing and/or reducing environments, are used in high temperature solid oxide fuel cells as a gas-tight and electrically conductive interconnection layer. In this study, perovskite $(La_{0.8}Ca_{0.2})(Cr_{0.9}Co_{0.1})O_3$ (LCCC) coatings manufactured by atmospheric plasma spraying followed by heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ have been investigated in terms of microstructural defects, gas tightness and electrical conductivity. The plasma-sprayed LCCC coating formed an inhomogeneous layered structure after the successive deposition of fully-melted liquid droplets and/or partially-melted droplets. Micro-sized defects including unfilled pores, intersplat pores and micro-cracks in the plasma-sprayed LCCC coating were connected together and allowed substantial amounts gas to pass through the coating. Subsequent heat treatment at $1200^{\circ}C$ formed a homogeneous granule microstructure with a small number of isolated pores, providing a substantial improvement in the gas-tightness of the LCCC coating. The electrical conductivity of the LCCC coating was consequently enhanced due to the complete elimination of inter-splat pores and micro-cracks, and reached 53 S/cm at $900^{\circ}C$.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a bioabsorbable bone hemostatic agent comprising poly (ethylene glycol-propylene glycol) copolymers (PEG-PPG) on hemostasis and osteogenesis. Bilateral 3 mm diameter calvarial defects were created in 99 male Sprague-Dawley rats. The defects were filled with PEG-PPG or bone wax. The defects of control group were left unfilled. Virtual autopsy was performed to evaluate bioabsorption. The calvaria were subjected to x-ray microtomography (microCT) and histological examination. Bone volume fraction (BV/TV) and bone mineral density (BMD) were measured using microCT; furthermore, white blood cell count and histological examination were performed. After application of PEG-PPG and bone wax, immediate hemostasis was achieved. Autopsy revealed that PEG-PPG disappeared within 48 h at the application site; in contrast, bone wax remained until 12 weeks. The PEG-PPG and control groups showed significantly more osteogenesis than the bone wax group with respect to BV/TV and BMD at 3, 6, and 12 weeks (p < 0.05). Histology revealed that the bone wax group exhibited little bone formation with inflammation. In contrast, PEG-PPG and control groups showed significantly more qualitative osteogenesis than the bone wax group (p < 0.01). In conclusion, PEG-PPG showed immediate hemostasis and was absorbed to allow progressive osteogenesis.
We propose a new method for automatic fluency scoring of English speaking tests spoken by nonnative speakers in a free-talking style. The proposed method is different from the previous methods in that it does not require the transcribed texts for spoken utterances. At first, an input utterance is segmented into a phone sequence by using a phone recognizer trained by using native speech databases. For each utterance, a feature vector with 6 features is extracted by processing the segmentation results of the phone recognizer. Then, fluency score is computed by applying support vector regression (SVR) to the feature vector. The parameters of SVR are learned by using the rater scores for the utterances. In computer experiments with 3 tests taken by 48 Korean adults, we show that speech rate, phonation time ratio, and smoothed unfilled pause rate are best for fluency scoring. The correlation of between the rater score and the SVR score is shown to be 0.84, which is higher than the correlation of 0.78 among raters. Although the correlation is slightly lower than the correlation of 0.90 when the transcribed texts are given, it implies that the proposed method can be used as a preprocessing tool for fluency evaluation of speaking tests.
Ozone caused the crack on the surface of a rubber article by oxidation of double bond at room temperature. Wax migrates to the surface of a rubber article and makes a physical barrier to prevent process of ozonation. We investigated change of molecular weight distribution of waxes in unfilled NR, SBR, and BR vulcanizates before and after aging at room temperature for 6 months. Migration and evaporation behaviors of wax in a rubber article at ambient conditions help understand a role of wax as an antidegradant and appearance contamination of a rubber article. The relative intensity distribution of n-alkanes of the NR specimen after the aging was shifted to higher molecular weight compared with the relative intensity distribution before the aging, while those of the SBR specimen before and after the aging did not show a big difference.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to know the physical properties of UDMA dental composite resins containing two photosensitizers, PD, DA, as a photosensitizer instead of CQ. We want to know Remaining Double Bond(RDB) of UDMA unfilled resin and diametral tensile strength and flexural strength of composite resin containing PD and DA were compared with those of CQ, most widely used photosensitizer for dental composite resins. Methods: The RDB of UDMA studied by FT-IR spectroscopy increased with irradiation time. The composite resins were tested for their physical properties. The dental composite resins were made with UDMA as a monomer, silanized silica as filler, N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DAEM) as amine initiator, and one of the two kinds of new photosensitizers. Results: The relative RDB of UDMA was in the order: DA > CQ > PD but the physical properties of the composite resins show PD and DA with higher results compared with that containing CQ. The reason for the results is that PD and DA serve not only as a photosensitizer but also as a photo-crosslinking agent. Conclusion: PD and DA show as effective photosensizers, suitable for UDMA dental composite resin compare with a higher efficiency than CQ.
This paper describes the design of a new interlocking masonry system, the production of designed interlocking units and mechanical properties of interlocked masonry assemblages with mortar. In this proposed system, units have horizontal and vertical locks to integrate the units to the wall and have a channel to enable the use of horizontal reinforcements in the wall. Using these units, unfilled, filled or reinforced walls can be constructed with or without mortar. In the production of the interlocking units, it was decided to use foamed concrete. 12 trial productions have been carried out at different mix proportions to obtain the optimum concrete mix. At the end of the mentioned productions, the units were produced with foam concrete which is selected as the most suitable in terms of compressive strength and specific gravity. Then, axial compression, diagonal tension and bed joint shear tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties of the interlocked masonry assemblages with mortar. Results from the tests showed that interlocks designed to strengthen the system against shear stresses by creating discontinuity throughout the joints have been successful to achieve their aim. Obtained data will enable structural analysis of walls to be constructed with these new units.

In this study, sand casting process was applied to manufacture a large aluminum turbo-type fan used for tank powerpack. To apply the sand casting method, the turbo fan was reverse engineered, and after designing three gating systems, the optimal gating system design was selected by performing casting simulation. In the case of the bottom up-gating system, there is a significant temperature loss of the molten alloy during blade filling. When the molten alloy is completely filled into the sand mold, the blade upper tip and front shroud are below the liquidus temperature. In the case of the top down-gating system, molten alloy scattering occurs, but the temperature loss while the blade is filled is smaller than that of the bottom up type. And after the inflow of molten alloy into the mold is completed, the blade upper tip and front shroud are higher than the liquidus temperature. A sand mold was manufactured with the top down-gating system and the casting process was performed. The fan was made perfectly in appearance without any unfilled parts.
A general scheme of a rubber structure is proposed. Using the thermomechanical method(TMA), some changes in the molecular and topological structures for uncured and cured, and unfilled and filled rubbers during processing are shown. In our investigations as region it is understood a complex structure, which is expressed at the thermomechanical curve(TMC) as a zone differed from others in thermal expansion properties. This zone is between the noticed temperatures of relaxation transitions, usually on the level like those determined by DMTA at 1Hz. These regions, which shares, are not stable, and differ in molecular-weight distribution(MWD) of chain fragments between the junctions. Differences in dynamics of the formation of the molecular and topological structures of a vulcanizate are dependent on the rubber formulation, mixing technology and curing time. Some of characteristics of these regions correlate with mechanical properties of vulcanizates what is shown for NR rubbers containing ENR or CPE as a polymeric additive. It is well known that the state of order influences diffusivity of low-molecular substances into the polymer matrix. Because of this, the two topological amorphous regions should influence the distribution of the ingredients and resulting in rubber compounds' heterogeneity, and related properties of cured rubber. Investigation of this problem is expected to be, in the future, one of the essential factors in determining further improvement of polymeric materials properties by compounding with additives and in reprocessing of rubber scrap.

Unidirectional commingled-yarn-based carbon fiber(CF)/polyamide(PA) 6 composite was fabricated under molding pressures of 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 MPa to study its flexural deformation and fracture behavior. Fiber/matrix interfacial bonding area became larger with an increase of molding pressure from 0.4 to 0.6 MPa. For molding pressures .geq. 0.6 MPa, good flexural performance of similar magnitudes was attained. For the fracture test, four kinds of notch direction were adopted : edgewise notches parallel (L) and transverse (T) to the major direction of fiber bundles, and flatwise notches parallel(ZL) and perpendicular(ZT) to this direction. Nominal bend strength for L and ZL specimens exhibited high sensitivity to notching. ZL specimens revealed the lowest values of the critical stress intensity factor $K_c$ which was slightly superior to those of unfilled PA6 matrix. Enlargement of the compression area for T specimens was analyzed by means of the rigidity reduction resulting from the fracture occurrence.
