Geographical Visualization of Rare Events

  • Maps contain and effectively visualize a number of spatial information. Advances in GIS enable researchers to analyze and represent spatial information through digital maps. Choropleth maps represent different quantities showing usually rates, percentages or densities. Generally, researchers make choropleth maps using raw rates. But, if the events are rare, raw rates cannot be sufficient in representing spatial phenomena. That is to say, if the population is large and events are rare, we cannot be sure that the raw rate is correct. The objective of this study is to make choropleth maps by several rate calculation methods and compare them. We use three methods in choropleth mapping; a raw rate, empirical Bayesian method, and spatial rate method which use prior probabilities. The experiments reveal that maps are somewhat different by used methods. We suggest that a raw rate method can not be an only way to make a rate map and researchers should choose an appropriate method for their objectives.

  • The earth's environmental problems have attracted serious attention worldwide. Various kinds of environmental data, such as remote sensing data, have become available for examining. Although this data is crucial to understanding such problems, there has become an over-abundance in variety of size, format, and filetype which makes it difficult for researchers to handle. We feel that earth environmental researchers should not be burdened by such cumbersome tasks. Therefore, we are developing a digital library for earth environmental information and a VRML based data visualization system for it. Even now, content-based image retrieval systems have many problems attributed to the degree of difficulty in implementing them. Thus, we are trying to visualize this data so that researchers can utilize it more efficiently, effectively, and easily. A great advantage for VRML users is that people can see environmental data from any perspective above the earth and with any resolution easily. Also by using MPEG-movie, users can observe the changes of data drawn from time series files.

  • Experimenting with concrete to determine its compressive and tensile strengths is a laborious and time-consuming operation that requires a lot of attention to detail. Researchers from all around the world have spent the better part of the last several decades attempting to use machine learning algorithms to make accurate predictions about the technical qualities of various kinds of concrete. The research that is currently available on estimating the strength of concrete draws attention to the applicability and precision of the various machine learning techniques. This article provides a summary of the research that has previously been conducted on estimating the strength of concrete by making use of a variety of different machine learning methods. In this work, a classification of the existing body of research literature is presented, with the classification being based on the machine learning technique used by the researchers. The present review work will open the horizon for the researchers working on the machine learning based prediction of the compressive strength of concrete by providing the recommendations and benefits and drawbacks associated with each model as determining the compressive strength of concrete practically is a laborious and time-consuming task.

일부 대학 실험실 연구자들의 근골격계질환 위험 요인과 증상 (Ergonomic Risk Factors and Musculoskeletal Symptoms among University Laboratory Researchers)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of symptoms relating to musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and investigate the risk factors among researchers at university laboratories. Methods: 209 researchers were included in this study, drawn from 27 laboratories at three universities in Korea. Checklists for MSD symptoms and risk factor assessment were utilized. Results: The symptoms checklist showed reliable results with Cohen's Kappa 0.33-0.56, percent agreement 81.0-96.8%, and correlation coefficient 0.41-0.63. The overall prevalence of MSD symptoms was 68.9%, while the prevalence in specific parts of body were as follows: shoulders (47.6%), lower back (46.9%), neck (46.9%), knees (25.4%), wrists (20.1%), elbows (13.6%). The symptom prevalence among women was higher than among men (OR 2.67, 95% CI 1.37-5.18). Daily exposure time was observed to be a significant risk factor for developing MSD symptoms (OR 2.14-6.07). Conclusions: This study suggested that repetitive pipetting and static work posture are the most significant risk factors for MSD symptoms among laboratory researchers.

컴퓨터 분야의 공저자 소셜 네트워크 분석 (A Study on Co-author Networks in the Journal of a Branch of Computers)

  • 다양한 학문 분야에서 연구자 단독이 아닌 여러 연구자가 협동하여 같은 주제를 연구하는 경향을 보이고 있다. 여러 연구자가 협동 하는 형태를 소셜 네트워크 분석 방법을 통해 분석하려는 연구는 여러 분야에서 이루어지고 있으나 컴퓨터 분야에서 이러한 연구는 거의 없었다. 본 논문에서는 한국정보통신학회 논문지의 공저자의 네트워크를 소셜 네트워크 분석기법을 통해 네트워크의 특성과 다양한 연구자 그룹을 분석하며 연결 중심성, 사이 중심성, 에지 강도 등을 분석하고자 한다. 분석결과 공저자 네트워크 내 많은 그룹이 추출되었지만 상위 20개 그룹이 전체의 50% 이상을 차지하였고, 연결 중심성과 사이 중심성 모두 가장 높은 값을 가지는 연구자를 찾을 수 있었다. 또한, 매우 높은 빈도로 공동연구를 하는 연구자 쌍도 찾을 수 있었다. 이러한 공저자 네트워크는 향후연구를 통해 연구주제와 방향성에 대한 심층적인 연구의 토대가 될 것으로 기대된다.

유전자은행의 운영성과 제고를 위한 유전자원이용촉진 판별요인의 탐색 (Discriminant Factors Influencing Utilization of Genetic Resources)

  • 본 연구는 유전자은행을 통한 유전자원활용을 극대화하기 위한 맥락에서 유전자은행의 유전자원이용에 대한 만족과 지속적 이용의 정도차이를 판별할 수 있는 요인, 즉 유전자원이용자(=연구자)가 유전자원에 부여하는 유용성 속성을 실증적으로 분석하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 기존문헌 고찰을 통해 연구자들이 유전자원에 부여하는 유용성 속성을 연구 활동에의 부합성, 유용특성정보, 활용가치, 연구 활동의 촉진성, 신규성으로 도출하고, 미생물유전자원을 이용하는 연구자들을 대상으로 유전자원이용정도가 높은 집단과 낮은 집단(유전자원이용에 대한 만족과 지속적 이용에 기초하여 분류)을 판별할 수 있는 유용성 속성의 파악을 위해 판별분석을 수행하였다. 분석결과, 5개의 유용성 속성 중에서 유전자원의 활용가치와 연구 활동에의 부합성이 판별력이 가장 높은 것으로 나타났다. 유용특성정보와 연구 활동의 촉진성은 판별력이 그리 높지 않았으며, 신규성은 판별력이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구의 결과에 기초하여 유전자원의 활용촉진을 위한 정책적 시사점을 제공하였으며, 본 연구의 한계점과 이를 극복하기 위한 향후 연구방향도 제시하였다.

국내 물리치료분야에 대한 질적 평가와 근거 수준 및 권고 등급 모형 개발 방안 (Qualitative Assessment and Development of Level of Evidence and Strength of Recommendation Models in the Field of Physical Therapy in Korea)

  • Purpose : This study aimed to identify ways to improve the quality of physical therapy research and ultimately review the current situation to improve evidence-based decision-making in physical therapy. Methods : For better evidence-based decision-making in physical therapy, researchers should review the quality assessment of articles in more detail and report their findings for valid and appropriate level of evidence and strength of recommendations. The level of evidence affects how well the findings are derived from well-designed literature. The evaluation of the evidence focuses primarily on the study design and the degree of bias that may compromise the validity of the findings. The final recommendation is based on a combination of the study design and literature quality. To uncover gems of information in each paper, a risk of bias assessment should be performed after the literature has been initially selected. Results : Researchers should consider the complexity of the intervention, appropriate grouping, and calculation of effect sizes for the intervention. Researchers conducting systematic reviews should provide a detailed description of the quality assessment performed and present a detailed analysis of their interpretation of the results. The results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses should be interpreted with caution and include a risk of bias assessment. Guidelines for the level of evidence and strength of recommendations should be developed and utilized more broadly to improve reporting practices in physical therapy. Conclusion : Researchers should be knowledgeable about the strengths and limitations of each study design and methodology. In the future, researchers will also need to improve their ability to critically evaluate their findings, given the potential for their results to influence clinical practice.

  • The present survey aimed at analyzing factors influencing the development of the university library collection, with the special reference to the case of the Education Collection of the Pusan National University Library. For this, the present researchers have identified two areas of influencing factors, i.e.., library factors and user factors. Library factors included collection development policy, manpower, materials received as gift and budget. User factors included faculty and students. For analyzing the factors, the present researchers have relied on qualitative research techniques, using heavily documents produced within the case library, interviews librarians, faculty and students, and observation.

  • The advancement of Information Communication Technology has provided tourism researchers with a golden opportunity to access big data, which plays a critical role in smart tourism. Recognizing the current issue, this paper discusses the evolution of the literature on tourism big data focusing on conceptual understanding of and types of big data, and insights from big data analytics. Indeed, this article provides important research agenda for future tourism researchers who would like to conduct academic research about big data and smart tourism.
