Repeated column chromatography of the CHCI_3-soluble fraction of Zingiber zerumbet led to the isolation and identification of two aromatic compounds, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde (1) and vanillin (2), and six kaempferol derivatives, kaempferol-3,4',7-O-trimethylether (3), kaempferol-3-O-methylether (4), kaempferol-3,4'-O-dimethylether (5), 4'-O-acetylafzel in (6), kaempferol-3-O-(4-O-acetyl-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside)], 2',4'-O-diacetylafzelin (7), kaempferol-3-O-(2,4-O-diacetyl-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside)], and 3',4'-O-diacetylafzelin (8), kaempferol-3-O-(3,4-O-diacetyl-$\alpha$-L-rhamnopyranoside)]. The structures of 1-8 were identifed by analysis of spectroscopic data as well as by comparison with published values. This is the first report on the isolation of compounds 1-3 from this plant.

The quality of Alismatis Rhizoma was evaluated by reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method. Alisol B 23-acetate was used as a standard marker for evaluation. This component was fully separated from the other components in the plant extracts on a ODS column. Identifcation of alisol B 23-acetate was carried out by comparing the LC/MS spectrum of separated peak from the extract with that of standard. Alisol B 23-acetate contents in Alismatis Rhizoma obtained from several herbal markets were varied from $0. 15\%$ to $0.56\%$.

Four diarylheptanoids, (5R)-1,7-bis (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-heptane-5-O-$\beta$-D-glucoside (1), (5R)-1,7-bis (3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)-heptane-5-ol (2), oregonin (3), hirsutanonol (4), were isolated from the bark of Alnus hirsuta Turcz and its inhibitory effects on melanogenesis by measuring the melanin level and tyrosinase activity in B16 melanoma cell were examined. Melanin level and tyrosinase activity were reduced to 75 to 85% by addition of diarylheptanoids to incubation medium of the melanoma cell. On the other hand, melanin level and tyrosinase activity were reduced to 13 to 43% by the addition of diarylheptanoids to incubation medium of the melanoma cell treated with melanogenesis stimulator, $\alpha$-MSH and forskolin. These melanogenesis inhibitory effects were significantly different compared with control.

A series of novel exomethylene cyclopropyl nucleosides have been synthesized starting from Feist's acid. Classical nucleophilic substitution conditions ($K_2CO_3$, 18-crown-6) of the tosylate 2 as well as Mitsunobu reaction (DEAD, $PPh_3$) of alcohol 1 with pyrimidine bases afforded a series of novel cyclopropyl nucleosides. Compound 4b displayed moderate anti-HBV activity without any cytotoxicity up to $100{\;}{\mu}M$.

A reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatographic method was developed to determine the contents of psoralen and angelicin from some medicinal herbs. The optimum eluent for chromatography was 20 v/v% acetonitrile in water on a Zorbax 300SB $C_{18}$ column. The identification was carried out by comparing the retention time and mass spectra of the relevant peaks with their standards. The variation of the concentration of psoralen and angelicin was wide between different species. The seeds of Psoralea corylifolia showed the highest contents of psoralen (7.8 mg/g) and angelicin (2.3 mg/g) among the tested herbs.

A strong antioxidant activity, which was measured by the radical scavenging effect on 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) radical, was detected in the methanol extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge (Labiatae). By activity-directed fractionation, compounds 1 and 2 were isolated as antioxidant principles of S. miltiorrhiza. Compounds 1 and 2 were identified as dimethyl lithospermate and 3-(3, 4-dihydroxyphenyl)lactamide, respectively, on the basis of spectral data. The radical scavenging effect of compounds 1 and 2 on DPPH radical exceeded that of L-ascorbic acid which is a well known antioxidant. These two compounds also showed prominent inhibitory activity against free radical generation in dichlorofluorescein (DCF) method and cytoprotective effect against t-BHP in cultured liver cell.

The effect of some alcohols on the riboflavin derivatives in non-polar solvent was studied by various spectroscopic method in order to support the view point that alcohol may directly interect with the isoalloxazine moiety of FAD, the coenzyme of D-amino-acid oxidase. The most possible association complex between alcohol and riboflavin is the 1:1 complex through the 2-C carbonyl function of the isollaxazine ring nd the hydroxyl proton of alcohol. It is appeared that methanol has a larger association constant than any other alcohols, and the association constant decreases with the carbon number increases and being bulkier in the alkyl group of alcohols.

The effect of Red ginseng saponin on plasma lipid levels in Wistar rats fed on a diet high in cholesterol and triglyceride was determined. A dose of Red ginseng-crude saponin (150 mg/kg/day) was administered orally for 4 weeks to Wistar rats fed on a diet containing 2% cholesterol and 10% olive oil. Plasma levels of total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride were measured and lipoproteins were analyzed by using electrophoretic technique. Red ginseng saponin showed no significant changes of HDL-cholesterol level but it lowered plasma levels of total cholesterol and elevate those of triglyceride intensively.

Intramuscular schwannomma is unusual and rare cases were reported in the literature in the gluteus maximus muscle. We present a case of an intramuscular schwannoma arising from the gluteus maximus muscle in a sixty-five-year-old woman. An oval in shape and well encapsulated tumor was found embedded with the gluteus maximus muscle, and then the lesion was excised surgically. Two years following excision of the lesion, the patient remained asymptomatic, with no evidence of local recurrence.

As a rare cause of tumor in hand, we report eight cases of neurilemmoma in the digital nerve. Enucleation of the neurilemmoma under the microscopy resulted in complete relief of the symptoms at the latest follow-up.
