  • The purpose of this research is (i) to establish the principles particularly appropriate for the arrangement of archival collections is korea, and (ii) to produce a workable model of classification scheme in conformity with the established principles. The archival collections in korea are roughly devided into two groups as follows. (1) The collections of professional institutions of archives such as Korean National Archives. (2) The collections preserved by libraries, museums, and other similar institutions as a secondary collection, and these groups of collections are generally non-systematic collecting. For the arrangement of the former collections, the concept of "respect des fonds" which is universally accepted principies in archives are also applicable. But in case of the arrangement of the latter collections, the above mentioned principles are inappropriate because its collections a re built in separate pieces of documents and records without any relevance to the original function or structure of the corporation. Consequantly it is badly needed to make some devices for the arrangement of these archival collections since the archival collections of korea, in the majority of cases, belong to the latter. The author produced a tentative classification scheme, and adapted the korean traditional form (or type) of documents and records as a cardinal principle of the classification. The scheme is presented at the end of this paper.

For these purposes, this study defines research records and their types by reviewing related studies. In addition, this study analyzed the following research records values: (1) evidence of research integrity and accountability with regard to research misconduct; (2) information for a succeeding study and an honorable failure; and (3) an asset for intellectual property rights and technology transfer. Finally, this study extracted the following characteristics of the research records: (1) each type of documents, data, and materials; (2) the archival bond between program and records; and (3) the continuity of production and use of the records. The findings from this analysis could be considered in revising related laws and policies.

  • Records at closed private universities are simply kept in stacks without the use of records classification systems. However, the systematic management of such records is needed as these are important records that have legal and evidential value during the litigation process. Therefore, this study intends to develop a classification system for recordkeeping at closed private universities aiming to eliminate unnecessary follow-up procedures that may occur because of the absence of a records classification system, and to develop practical tools for managing records at closed universities. To this end, Seonam University, among the 13 transfer records kept by the Korea Advancing Schools Foundation, was selected as the example for this study. The peculiarities of the closing processes and the catalogs of the transfer records were reviewed, and a business function analysis was conducted. Based on the Guidelines for Prescribing Retention Period of University Records by the National Archives and the Ministry of Education, a records classification system for the closed private universities was proposed for the Records Disposition Schedule to handle the uniqueness of closed universities.
