In the context of lifelong education program for an aging society and information age, elementary school facilities are expected to accommodate various people in diverse age group and diverse physical abilities. Introduction of the 'Universal Design' concept seems inevitable in school environment in terms of public infra structure for community. However, in architectural point of view, unlike foreign examples, simply applied barrier-free and safety standards of domestic guidelines based on dimensional data does not function enough to achieve universal design in authentic manner. This study is focused on this issue and suggests the direction of improvement for architectural design guidelines. Through the comparative analysis of foreign and domestic design guidelines, two principles of universal design-'Flexibility in Use', 'Perceptile Information'- are found to be lacking in the domestic design guidelines for elementary school facilities. It is expected for government authority to develop more concrete guidelines to achieve universal design for school as a basic public space in the community.

As the population of the aged and the disabled increases, the needs for universal design is also growing. Universal design is to design for diverse users including all ages from children to the elderly, the disabled and non-disabled, the pregnant, the tourist, and etc. This study is intended to develop the design evaluation tool and guidelines of universal design for applying to space design. In order to achieve this, four basic spaces in human living such as residential space, educational space, working space, and cultural space were selected. Then, the elements of universal design were chosen for each space. The numbers of areas in each space were 12 for residential spae, 5 for educational space, 6 for working space, and 6 for cultural space. Also, 60 elements of universal design for residential space, 53 for educational space, 36 for working space, and 46 for cultural space were selected. The field observation with photos and user evaluation survey were carried out for each space by using these elements. Finally, the elements and guidelines of universal design applied for spatial design were suggested. This consisted of 8 areas and 67 elements. This would be useful for designing space for all people.

The concept of universal design has become an essential requirement for environmental design, due to the growing population of the aged, and the increasing needs of people with disabilities. This study aims to propose a universal design guideline for apartment housing units that can be adapted to both a general household and a household with elderly or disabled individuals. This design process encompasses literary reviews, and includes the measurements of the dimensions and facilities of currently available apartment housing. The three domestic universal guidelines were reviewed, and a universal design checklist for apartment housing units was developed. Afterward, the individual elements and inclusive factors of universal design, for apartment housing units, were collected and examined according to the each functional space within the home. The results and conclusions are as follows: 1) The factors of universal design are diversified by the division of the functional spaces within the home, such as the private space, the work space and the entertaining space. 2) Due to the lack of space and storage, wheelchairs cannot be used in most currently available apartment types; this problem can be resolved by applying flexibility and optional adaptation. The solutions for the above are additional design factors that will enable more convenient usage and elaborate design.

The current study examines principles to develop universal design guidelines for manufacturing information and communication devices. The study surveyed inconveniences disabled people experience in the information and communication environment with current technology and design, and suggested abbreviated universal design guidelines. Design guidelines should reduce those inconveniences detected through the task analysis and GOMS modelling of the usage by disabled people. Design and functional features of mobile phones were examined since they quickly became essential communication tools for both disabled and non-disabled people alike. Design issues were examined in controls, input methods, and output methods in terms of human factors and ergonomics. It is expected that both governments and manufacturers can save costs to produce and manufacture special assistive devices for disabled people by implementing universal design in their communication products. Since it is becoming the international trend, application of the universal design should be enforced to all communication and information devices by government for the higher quality of life for all groups of user.

The worldwide population is aging rapidly. In this circumstance, Korean society is in need of the urgent comprehensive countermeasures that will help the elderly with their health problems and infection control in their daily life. Universal design has supportive, adaptable, accessible and safety-oriental design standards for the elderly. Is this study, we propose the guidelines of the mobile application development based on the application of the universal design for infection control in the elderly. From the perspective of the universal design, there are several important guidelines including 'generalized access', 'simple and intuitive usage', 'low physical effort', and 'visualized language' based on the KCDC(Korea centers for disease control and prevention) principles for the elderly. These findings show that the guidelines for improving the health literacy of the mobile application via universal design are necessary to enhance the health behavior of infection control for the elderly.

Current world population is rapidly ageing and the disabled population is expected to age seriously as well. The concern about the elderly and the disabled is increased largely not just the field of social welfare and service but the housing planning where the physical environment of everyday life is. Recently in Ireland, 'Universal Design Guideline for Homes' is established and proposed in public. It is considered as initial and special national policy for the socially venerable. The purpose of this research is to analyze the User Benefit Characteristics(UBC) of 'Universal Design Guideline for Homes in Ireland' and clearly organize the characteristics for comprehensive communication. The research subjects are 444 guidelines of 'Universal Design Guideline for Homes in Ireland.' The research is conducted by contents analysis technique, and each guideline is analyzed by the 4 main concepts of UBC- 'Behavioral Facilitation(BF)', 'Physiological Maintenance(PhM)', 'Perceptual Maintenance(PM)', 'Social Facilitation(SF).' As results, the User Benefit Characteristic of 'Universal Design Guideline for Homes in Ireland' is ordered by PhM>PM>BF>SF. The design guidelines are supposed to support ageing in place and sustainable living in the existing houses even though people are ageing or being disabled. 'Universal Design Guideline for Homes in Ireland' supports safe behavior and comfort cognition especially in indoor and surrounding outdoor environment. This research is significant for sharing the knowledge and comprehension of decreasing environmental stress of the elderly in specific, and could be utilized for developing new elderly housing in future.

Liturgical space of Catholic churches should be equal conditions for everyone who wants to participate in the liturgy. However liturgical space is standardized for healthy adults without considering the elderly and the disabled. This study intended to suggest the guidelines required for the construction of Catholic churches from the perspective of universal design for all believers to equally participate in liturgy. The results of the study are as follows. First, as a result of the analysis of the liturgical spaces in six Catholic churches from the perspective of universal design, although the principle of universal design was not appropriately applied to all liturgical spaces of a Catholic church, there were cases where it was appropriately applied in part to each of the Catholic churches. Therefore, this study suggested the examples of exemplary installation by space, which is considered to be the materials that can be referenced and utilized when planning the liturgical spaces in the Catholic churches from the perspective of universal design. Second, the obligations required by the building regulations were installed in six cases, but the application of the universal design was insufficient in other spaces. Therefore, more careful consideration for users is considered necessary during space planning. Third, the construction of Catholic churches should be planned, taking into account the liturgical law; for this purpose, the provision of the guidelines for Catholic architectural planning further than the guidelines for architecture by each diocese is necessary. At this time, the collaboration between the Catholic officials and the architects and designers with knowledge of Catholic doctrine is required.

The purpose of this study was to develop a workwear design that takes into account the characteristics of people with severe developmental disabilities who can engage in vocational activities. The aim was to identify needs according to the specific characteristics of people with severe disabilities to design work clothes and develop products according to universal design guidelines. This research method was conducted through representative interviews from a company employing people with severe dis- abilities in Daegu to determine the requirements for workers-related work clothes, and then applied universal design guidelines to perform appropriate design. The results of the study show that the hygiene and warmth of clothing are important for people with developmental disabilities. Therefore, the use of bright materials is required. Second, people with brain lesions often have low body temperature due to difficulties with blood circulation, for which warmth is a required factor. Third, people with severe developmental disabilities should not be differentiated in comparison to people without disabilities, therefore, it was important to use nondiscriminatory designs. Accordingly, it was more efficient to modify and supplement clothing designed for non-disabled people with hidden functions to suit specific characteristics, rather than to develop specialized clothing. These demands were found to conform to what is referred to as a universal design concept, through which three nondiscriminatory shirt designs and two easy-to-use pants were designed.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate current usages and situations of kitchen with regard to universal design concept in order to provide useful data to plan universally designed kitchen space for all family members. Previous studies for universal design and kitchen planning were reviewed and a checklist was developed to evaluate kitchen space based on universal design concept by researchers of this study. Also, all items in the checklist were reclassified by 5 universal design criteria(Supportiveness, Adaptability, Communicability, Pleasantness, and Accessibility) and analyzed sample kichens by the criteria. The 7 households with different characteristics*age, sex, degree of disability or aging, and number of family) were selected for case studies. The results of this study suggested several critical design points to establish directions or provide guidelines for further kitchen planning.

Objective:The objective of this study is to apply the principals and policies of universal design to offer a safe and efficient workplace for older workers. Background: The concept of universal design has rapidly developed under the paradigm that tasks should be easy and comfortable for all people with diverse features. The concept is also fitting when designing a workplace. Method: Legislations, policies and precedents of workplaces with older workers have been studied and analyzed. The compilation has been used to project the present and future of employing universal design at workplace devisal. Results: Every country has its own legislations/policies regarding universal design, flexible working, and age-friendly workplaces to increase hire of older workers. The basic concept of UD and its application is explained. This study provides guidelines for employing universal design at workplaces and preventing accidents for older workers. Conclusion: Following the principals of universal design is expected to furnish a comfortable and safe workplace and lengthen the period of workers participating in the labor force in an ageing society. Application: This study offers the principles for universal design, serving as fundamental research for its application to the workplace.
