  • Micro-source units having power ratings in thousands of watts can provide even higher reliability and fuel efficiency than the conventional large scale units. These units are also clustered with loads creating micro-grid services to customer sites such as office buildings, industrial parks and homes. Micro-sources adopt voltage source inverter to ensure the power quality of sensitive loads. This paper deals with the connection of micro-sources into the system grid. Modeling and simulation of the grid connected micro-sources at the power frequency range are investigated. Simulation results show that the micro-grid system with two micro-sources has good dynamic characteristics.

  • The gear-reduction units of Korean high-speed trains consist of a motor reduction unit, an axle gear box reduction unit, and a tripod joint shaft. A reduction gear unit is a gearbox used to reduce the rotational speed of the input shaft to a slower rotational speed on the output shaft. This reduction in output speed helps to increase torque. Defective reduction gear units in high-speed trains are caused by damage to the gear or by gear fatigue. To diagnose potential problems, it is important to know the vibration characteristics of the reduction gear units. In this study, we analyzed the vibration characteristics of reduction gears under various conditions. The test setup included a full-scale test rig to evaluate reduction gear under both normal and extreme operating conditions.

  • Following the previous ones, this study is intended to explore methods of qualitative assessment on the view from apartment units. It first complemented and analyzed the attributes of landscape elements and then set up questionnaire items based on these attributes to identify the tendencies in apartment inhabitants' recognition of landscape elements, and then conducted a preference assessment on the test cases sampled on the basis of picture and other data collected in the previous studies to identify the characteristics of the preference for the view from apartment units according to landscape elements. Consequently, the following results have been derived. First, the landscape elements seen from apartment units may be classified into a total of sixteen categories, and the overall ratio of natural elements to artificial ones is shown to be approximately one to three. Second, it is also shown that apartment dwellers tend to prefer natural landscape elements over artificial ones, and the preferences for the distance to and location of landscape elements exhibit certain variance depending on the type of the elements. Third, the analysis of the preference for landscape elements has revealed that the types of landscape elements, the make-up and diversity of landscape elements, and the perceived distance to landscape elements as well as the resultant feeling of openness all affect the preference tendencies.

  • The new seismic isolation system (StLRB) is developed, which can separate non-seismic displacements which come from the thermal expansion etc. in LRB design. The StLRB has 3 components, sliding system (PTFE + stainless plate), LRB (lead rubber bearing) and STU (shock transmit units). In this project, the StLRB is designed to apply to the bridge structure by analyzing the characteristics of each component and also the dynamic behavior of the structure was analyzed by non-linear analysis. The verification test was performed to show the two stages separated by STU units. Test results show the effectiveness of both the separation and the seismic isolation performance.

  • Maintenance scheduling plays an important role in evaluating the supply reliability of power systems. Since generating units must be maintained and inspected, the generation planner must schedule planned outages during the year. Several factors entering into this scheduling analysis include: seasonal load-demand profile, amount of maintenance to bo done on all generating units, size of the units, elapsed time from last maintenance, and availability of maintenance crews. This paper proposes a new algorithm to decide the multi-year maintenance scheduling with considering the total cost. We adjust the maintenance scheduling to levelize the reliability over all period. The proposed algorithm is applied to a real size power system and the developed reliability results are obtained.
