  • This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sea surface temperature as a climatic element and catch amount of offshore and coastal fisheries in Korea using annual time series data from 1970 to 2013. It also tried to predict the future changes in catch amount of fisheries by climate change. Time series data on variables were estimated to be non-stationary from unit root tests, but one long-term equilibrium relation between variables was found from a cointegration test. The result of Granger causality test indicated that the sea surface temperature would cause directly changes in catch amount of offshore and coastal fisheries. The result of regression analysis on sea surface temperature and catch amount showed that the sea surface temperature would have negative impacts on the catch amount of offshore and coastal fisheries. Therefore, if the sea surface temperature would increase, all other things including the current level of fishing effort being equal, the catch amount of offshore and coastal fisheries was predicted to decrease.

  • This study aimed to analyze the relationship between sea temperatures and anchovy catch of Anchovy drag net fishery using annual time series data from 1970 to 2013. In the analysis, time series data on variables (CPUE, sea surface temperature, and 10m temperature) were estimated to be non-stationary from unit root tests, but one long-term equilibrium relation among variables was found from a cointegration test. From an exclusion test, a 10m temperature would not have relations with CPUE and sea surface temperature. The result of regression analysis on sea surface temperature and anchovy catch indicated that the sea surface temperature would have positive impacts on the anchovy catch. It means that when the sea surface temperature would increase, all other things including the current level of fishing effort being equal, the catch of anchovy was predicted to increase. More specifically, the result showed that when 1% of sea surface temperature increases, CPUE would be increased by 2.81%.

  • Purpose - The objective of the paper is to explain both the price sensitivity of international tourists to South Korea and the price sensitivity of Korean tourists to international travel. The study examines long-run equilibrium relationships and Granger causal relationships between foreign exchange rates and inbound and outbound tourism demand in South Korea. Research design/ data / methodology - The study employs monthly time series data from January 1990 to September 2010. The paper examines the long-run equilibrium relationship using the Johansen cointegration test approach after unit root tests. The short-run Granger causality was tested using the vector error correction model with the Wald test. Results - Hypothesis 1 testing whether there is a long-run equilibrium relationship between exchange rates, inbound and outbound tourism demand is supported. Hypothesis 2 testing whether exchange rates lead to a change in touristarrivals and expenditure is not supported. Hypothesis 3 testing whether exchange rates lead to a change in tourist departures and expenditure is supported. Conclusions - The findings of this study show that the impacts of tourism price competitiveness are changing quite significantly with regard to destination competitiveness. In other words, the elasticity of tourism price over tourism demand has been moderated.

  • Because Korea and Japan has joined WTO and OECD, it is impossible to carry out a direct export-promoted policy such as export subsidies. Therefore, the only policy which is internationally valid for promoting an export is the export insurance. Hence export insurance system became more useful tool since it's one of the few allowed subsidies under WTO. This paper examines to find the impacts of export insurance on the export supply in Korea and Japan. The period of data is from 1980 to 2006. Unlike previous studies on the effectiveness of export subsidy in export supply, the current study examines the stationarity nature of the concerned variables. The unit root tests show that all variables are not I(0) Time Series. Instead, they are I(1) Time Series. To this, cointegration verification was conducted based on the use of Johansen verification method to define the existence (or non-existence) of long-term balance relationship among variables. The concerned variables are revealed to be cointegrated. In order to analyze, this study introduce a VEC model. In this paper we construct two VEC models. The one is about Korea, the other is about Japan. The empirical evidences show that export insurance system has not contributed to promoting export supply in Japan. But the results of empirical analysis showed significant and positive effects of Korea export insurance upon the export supply.

  • The role of money in the modern economy highly determines the intensity and the development of the macroeconomy. The money supply is assumed to be as much as money demand, which reflects the economic character of a country and indicates the growth and development of macroeconomy. In Indonesia, the money supply (M1) is related to the economic dynamics in either the monetary market or the goods market. This research aims at analyzing factors that influence the money supply and to what extent the economic factors affect the money supply in Indonesia. The analysis method used in this research was Vector Autoregressive (VAR) with some variables, such as money supply (M1), interest rate, and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the 1st quarter of 2001 until the 1st quarter of 2013. The data collection method was in the form of data compilation from credible sources, such as Bank of Indonesia (BI), Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), and International Financial Statistics (IFS). To obtain adequate analysis results, several tests were taken, such as unit-root test, Granger causality test, and optimal lag. VAR analysis formulates the correlation among independent variables, so it also sees the study of impulse response and matrix decomposition.

  • A 7K60MC-S low speed diesel engine in a power plant has frequently experienced high vibration since the unit completed construction works. Up to date, no fundamental vibration solutions were reached. Hence, several vibration tests and analyses were conducted to identify the root cause of this high vibration and to suggest the optimal countermeasures for diesel engine. The 9.25 Hz and 25.4 Hz vibrations have been observed on main body during operation. The magnitude of engine upper structural vibration is generally similar in horizontal transverse direction. However, differences in the 'Fore' and 'After' vibration magnitude with the same vibration phase angle at 9.25 Hz occur due to the explosion pulsations of 7 cylinders and the Inertia momentum added by the SCR (selective catalytic reduction) duct system. It was analyzed that the excess structural vibration occurred when the natural frequency of engine body is affected by the exciting sources due to the explosion pressure and the discharge pulsation of the seven cylinders in resonance range.

  • This study aims to analyze causalities among Hairtail prices by distribution channel using a vector autoregressive model. This study applies unit-root test for stability of data, uses Granger causality test to know interaction among Hairtail Prices by distribution channel, and employes the vector autoregressive model to estimate statistical impacts among t-2 period variables used in model. Analyzing results of this study are as follows. First, ADF, PP, and KPSS tests show that the change rate of Hairtail price by distribution channel differentiated by logarithm is stable. Second, a Granger causality test presents that the producer price of Hairtail leads the wholesale price and then the wholesale price leads the consumer price. Third, the vector autoregressive model suggests that the change rate of Hairtail producer price of t-2 period variables statistically, significantly impacts change rates of own, wholesale, and consumer prices at current period. Fourth, the impulse response analysis indicates that impulse responses of the structural shocks with a respectively distribution channel of the Hairtail prices are relatively more powerful in own distribution channel than in other distribution channels. Fifth, a forecast error variance decomposition of the Hairtail prices points out that the own price has relatively more powerful influence than other prices.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between unemployment and shadow economy for 7 selected ASEAN countries using panel data from 2000-2017. This study uses a sample of 7 ASEAN countries including Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam covering the 2000-2017 period. The stationarity of the variables is determined by Pesaran panel unit-root tests. The Westerlund panel co-integration technique is used to examine the long-run relationship among the variables. In addition, dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS) methods are also employed. The DOLS and FMOLS results indicate that unemployment acts as an important driver for the increase in the shadow economy. In addition, the study results also reveal that GDP per capita has a negative impact on the shadow economy. Moreover, government expenditure, bank credit, and inflation are positively related to the shadow economy. The empirical results indicate that the size of the shadow economy is boosted by unemployment in the selected ASEAN economies. In addition, it is also evident that an increase of GDP per capita in the sample countries results in a lower shadow economy. Besides, government expenditure, bank credit, and inflation play a crucial role in the shadow economy.

  • This study aims to examine the causal links between the fiscal components, i.e., government expenditures (GE) and government revenues (GR), and their impact on the economic growth of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region. This analysis considered secondary panel data from 1990 to 2019 at an annual frequency. The data is obtained from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank Database. A panel cointegration and panel DH causality (Dumitrescu and Hurlin) approach was employed on financial data at an annual frequency from 1990 to 2019. The findings from panel unit root and panel cointegration tests demonstrate that, at first, all the variables are stationary and cointegrated. The panel ARDL disclosed that GE has a long-run connection with GDP, is significantly and positively associated with economic growth in the long run, whereas GR is significant in the short run. The contribution of GE is high in sustaining economic growth as compared to GR. Also, cointegration regression disclosed that GE is more sensitive toward GDP, while GR is less elastic. Lastly, the findings reveal that bidirectional causality exists between GE and GR variables. These results have policy implications for sustainable economic growth in the ASEAN region.
