LID technologies are capable of mitigating the negative impacts of non-point source (NPS) pollution generated in different land uses. Apart from the increase in point and non-point pollutant generation, highly developed and paved areas generally affect microclimate conditions. This study evaluated both the efficiency of Low Impact Development (LID) facilities in treating NPS pollutant loads as well as the unit pollutant loads (UPL) generated in various urban features (such as parking lots and highways). This investigation also looked at how LID technology helped to alleviate Urban Heat Island (UHI) conditions. As compared to the typical unit pollutant loads in South Korea, the unit pollutant loads at Kongju National University were relatively low, because of no classes, limited vehicular transmission, and low anthropogenic activities during vacation. After receiving treatment from the LID facilities, the effluent pollutant loads were significantly decreased. The sedimentation in filtration mechanisms considerably reduced the pollutant fractions in the influent. Additionally, it was shown that LID facilities' mean surface temperatures are up to 7.2℃ lower than the nearby paved environment, demonstrating the LID systems reducing the UHI impact on an urban area.
Reliable long-term flows by SWAT-K model were applied to the relationship between stream flow and pollutant load derived from 8-day measured data of Ministry of Environment (MOE) in order to obtain continuous loadograph and evaluate accuracy in water quality modeling for the Chungju dam watershed. The measured flow were compared with flow duration curve from the model, and it showed that measured values corresponded to the almost full range of stream flow conditions except at Odae A. And there was significant relationship ($R^2=0.60{\sim}0.97$) between measured flow and water quality load at all unit-watersheds. Applying this relationship to simulated flows, continuous loadograph was obtained and compared with modeled pollutant loads. Although there were some differences during some dry and flood seasons, those were not significant and overall trend showed a good agreement. From the results, we would be able to derive a continuous loadograph based on measured data at total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) unit-watersheds on a national scale, in which stream flow and water quality have been measured at 8-day intervals since 2004, and this could be helpful to utilize distributed water quality models with difficulty in calibrating and validating parameters from lack of measured data at present.

The purpose if the study is to apply GIS technique to sample area, Choensoo-Bay basin for an efficient and practical coastal zone management if pollution control. The basins, Unit if pollution control, are selected with qualitative analysis using DEM after considered river length, degree and area of basin through channel network analysis. Choensoo-Bay basin is divided with 6 zones to 33 subordinate zones. It is found to be a big difference of pollutant loads in each zone. The pollutant loads use to review for efficient zoning. And also the result apply to measurement of water quality and building for environmental infrastructure.

Characteristics of unit loads of pollutants were investigated at a paddy fields area(Soro-ri) with large-scaled plots on loam soil during irrigation seasons of 1999 ∼2000. The average irrigation requirement of experimental paddy area are estimated at over 3,000 mm. The unit loads of pollutants in paddy fields area are determined by subtracting irrigation water load from outflow load (percolated and surface outflow loads). Surface outflow load in rainy days was calculated using the relationships of discharge and load, which are grouped into fertilizing and non-fertilizing periods. The ratios of the surface outflow load in rainy days to the total surface outflow load are 16.4% for T-N, 26.8% for T-P, and 23.3% far CODc,. The unit loads of pollutants show month-to-month and year-to-year variations, and monthly unit load of pollutants can show negative values, indicating that the paddy area acts as the pollutants sink. The average unit loads of the pollutants during irrigation seasons were estimated at 18.2 kg/ha fur T-N, 0.31 kg/ha for T-P, and 43.3 kg/ha for CODc,, which are smaller than the reported values for Kosei area in Japan.

In national water quality policy, it changed previous regulation method that focuses on concentration of pollutants in effluent water to the way that regulates total amount of pollutants. The target of water quality in watershed of each river was set up, as the government instituted Total Maximum Daily Loads(TMDL). In order to accomplish successfully TMDL, it requires that the amount of pollutant loads discharged from point and nonpoint pollutant source should be investigated. This study, therefore, conducted the monitoring of the stormwater runoff at field region in farming area. And pollutants loads and unit loads discharged from field region results is calculated. As a result, the concentration of pollutants were calculated as follows: 10.5 BOD mg/L, 19.6 $COD_{Mn}$ mg/L, 4.5 TN mg/L and 2.4 TP mg/L. The unit load of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, TOC, TSS, TN and TP discharged from field region, also, were determined to $31.8kg/km^2/yr$, $56.7kg/km^2/yr$, $8.5kg/km^2/yr$, $560.9kg/km^2/yr$, $8.3kg/km^2/yr$ and $5.1kg/km^2/yr$, respectively. It was identified that there were some differences of unit loads between the results obtained from this study and previous one. To calculate exact unit loads, therefore, long term monitoring should be conducted.
The effects of low impact development (LID) techniques, such as green roofs and porous pavements, on the runoff and pollutant load from an apartment complex were simulated using the Site Evaluation Tool (SET). The study site was the Olympic Village, a preexisting apartment complex in Seoul, South Korea, which has a high percentage of impervious surfaces (approximately 72% of the total area). Using the SET, the effects of replacing parking lots, sidewalks and driveways (37.5% of the total area) having porous pavements and rooftops (14.5% of the total area) with green roofs were simulated. The simulation results indicated that LID techniques reduced the surface runoff, and peak flow and pollutant load, and increased the evapotranspiration and soil infiltration of precipitation. Per unit area, the green roofs were better than the porous pavements at reducing the surface runoff and pollutant loads, while the porous pavements were better than green roofs at enhancing the infiltration to soil. This study showed that LID methods can be useful for urban stormwater management and that the SET is a useful tool for evaluating the effects of LID on urban hydrology and pollutant loads from various land covers.
In this paper, a new and integrated approach easily used to calculate the pollutant loads from agricultural watersheds is suggested. Basic concepts of this empirical tool are based on the hypotheses that variations in event mean concentrations(EMCs) of the pollutants from a given agricultural watershed during rainstorms are only due to the rainfall pattern. This assumption would be feasible to agricultural watersheds whose land uses does not change during the cultivation period overlapped by rainy season and also in which point-sources of the pollutants are rare. Therefore, if EMC data sets through extensive sampling from various rural areas are available, it is possible to establish relationships between EMCs, shapes and land uses of the watersheds, and rainfall events. For this purpose, fifty one sets of EMC values were obtained from nine different watersheds, and those data were used to develop predictive tools for the EMCs of 55, COD, TN and TP in rainfall runoff. The results of the statistical tests for those formulas show that they are not only fairly good in predicting actual EMC values of some parameters, but also useful in terms of calculating pollutant loads on any time-spans such as the day of rainfall event or weekly, monthly, and yearly. Their applicability was briefly demonstrated and discussed. Also, the unit loads calculated from EMCs based on different land uses and real rainfall data over one of the watershed used for this study. were provided, and they are compared with other well-known unit loads.

Pollutant loads calculated with unit factor method can not identity seasonal variations of pollutant inputs. Estimation of pollutant loads considering rainfall runoff can overcome these limits. SCS curve number method was applied to estimate runoff of each event of Koeup watershed of Koheung estuary lake. SCS curve numbers were calculated based upon land use, soil types of the catchment using GIS. Point and nonpoint source pollutant loads were summed up for total loads estimation. Those from nonpoint source were estimated by multiplying the calculated runoff and expected mean concentrations (EMC) presented by the Minister of Environment of Korea. DEM can present three dimensional views of a terrain, identity stream networks and flow accumulation. Furthermore, it can examine accumulated pollutant loads of specific point of a catchment. Therefore, cell based pollutant load estimation was attempted using DEM. ArcView was utilized to collect, store and manipulate spatial and attribute data of pollutant sources and features of the catchment. Cell-based DEM which was established by the GRID module of ARC/INFO was employed to estimate flows and pollutant loads.

Point & nonpoint source pollutant loads were calculated in Juam lake watershed using GIS, and water quality was simulated using water quality model. Point source pollutant loads were estimated using the unit pollutant loads presented by the Ministry of Environment(MOE, 1998). Nonpoint source pollutant loads were estimated using the value of the direct runoff multiplied by expected mean concentration. The direct runoff was calculated using SCS curve number method. Water quality simulation was conducted using WASP model(2001) developed by U.S. EPA. In order to apply the model, Juam lake watershed was divided into 44 subbasins according to slope, elevation, soil type, landuse and precipitation. Then the model was applied to one subbasin. Simulation results were compared to observed values and the result should good agreement with each other.

Nonpoint source pollutant loading from watershed may cause a problem to the water quality of the reservoir and stream. The characteristics of stream flow and water quality were monitored to investigate the runoff loading of the Namdae-cheon watershed from May in 1999 to October in 2003. Stage-discharge rating curve at the stream gauging site was established, and annual stream runoff of the study watershed was estimated as 499.4∼1,330.8mm during four years. The concentrations of total-nitrogen and total-phosphorus of stream water quality ranged from 0.76 to 6.95mg/L and from 0.0010 to 0.2276 mg/L, respectively, where T-N was generally higher than the water quality standard 1.0 mg/L for agricultural water use. The loads by unit generation of pollutant mass with respect to population, livestock, land use in this watershed were calculated. The runoff pollutant loadings by concentrations of total-N and total-P were estimated during study period, where the annual runoff loading of total-P was much less than the load by pollutant mass unit generation. The relations between stream discharge and water quality were analysed, and there was a high correlation for total-N but low for total-P. These results will be used to develop the monitoring techniques and water quality management system of agricultural watershed.
