  • Because flow uniformity affects the life cycle and performance of the catalyst, it is an important design factor for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems. We examined how the diffuser angle and the area ratio of the inlet of the SCR reactor to the front of the catalyst affect flow uniformity. For the numerical analysis, we used STAR-CCM+, a common CFD software program. Analysis results showed that the larger the area ratio was, the less the flow uniformity was, and that the longer the diffuser length was, the greater the flow uniformity was. When the area ratio was greater than 1:5, the flow uniformity appeared very similar at the front of the catalyst. As a result, the spread time of the exhaust gas increased and the flow velocity decreased.

  • Role of the perforated pipe is to drain the water with equal pressure and velocity through the holes of perforated pipe. The perforated pipe is being used in many processes of water treatment system, however, the design parameter of perforated pipe is not standardized in korea. In this study, we have found the design parameter of perforated pipe in the water treatment system using the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). The uniformity of outflow from the perforated pipe is directly affected according to area ratio(gross area of holes/surface area of the perforated pipe). In other words, the uniformity of outflow is improved as area ratio is smaller. Also, at the same area ratio, the uniformity of outflow is improved as number of holes is increase. Specially, in case of the two holes per length of pipe diameter(2/D) shows the most uniformity of outflow and the best hydraulic with the smaller pressure drop. The uniformity of outflow is aggravated and the pressure drop of pipe is decrease as length of pipe is longer. In case of that pipe length is 10m and above, the pressure drop decreased about 30% when diameter ratio is 40% with 0.2% of area ratio by comparison with 0.1% of area ratio.

  • With the assumption that the performance of a catalyst is guaranteed and that the performance of an SCR reactor is influenced by the uniformity of fluid flow into the catalyst, this study carried out a numerical analysis of flow uniformity, which is an important design factor in SCR reactors. CFD was used to grasp flow uniformity and flow characteristics inside the SCR reactor. As for the flow uniformity, analysis was carried out on the velocity and direction of the fluid flowing into the front of the first SCR reactor. Numerical analysis was carried out in terms of the area ratios of the mixing evaporator to the catalyst for 500 PS SCR, 1 : 1.9, 1 : 3.1, 1 : 4.5, and 1 : 7.0. The results showed that the larger the area ratio, the smaller the flow uniformity. On the basis of these results, the flow uniformity of the modified SCR reactor is 77%. A guidevane was installed to improve flow uniformity, and attempts were made to grasp the flow uniformity based on the shape of the guide vane. The shape of the guide vane was cylindrical, and numerical analysis was carried out for cases with two cylinders and three cylinders. As a result of the numerical analysis, it was found that while there was no great difference between 82.7% with two cylinders and 81.7% with three cylinders, the effects of the installation of the guide vane on the improvement of flow uniformity were indisputable.

  • Determination of geotechnical characteristics of soil is either to use the field samples to measure the characteristics of soil through laboratory test or measuring the characteristics directly in the field. Field test can be derived similar value by considering characteristics of site and laboratory test can be confirmed the characteristic of soil by testing with field samples. This article describes relative density as the measure of compaction for cohesionless soils and presents several simple and mathematical relationships to help engineers estimate needed parameters for relative density calculations. The main purpose of this research is to investigate possible correlations between coefficient of uniformity, coefficient of curvature, maximum and minimum void ratio, mean grain size. Results show a linear relationship between the minimum and maximum void ratios and a power function relationship between coefficient of uniformity and the limiting void ratios. Void ratio range, which is the difference between the maximum and minimum void ratios, appeared to be log normally distributed but showed no simple mathematical fit to the data. these results were shown to help engineers estimate needed parameters for relative density calculations.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to design a variable frequency LED light system for plant factory which combined red, blue, green, white, and UV lights and controlled the ratio of the light wavelength. In addition, this study evaluated the performance of each combination of LED to verify the applicability. Methods: Four combinations of LED (i.e. Red+Blue, Red+Blue+Green, Red+Blue+White, Red+Blue+UV) were designed using five types of LED. The system was designed to control the duty ratio of each wavelength of LED by 1% interval from 0~100%, the pulse by 1Hz interval from 1~20kHz. Response characteristics of the control system, spectral distribution of each combination, light uniformity and uniformity ratio were measured to test the performance of the system. Results: Clean waveforms were measured from 10Hz to 10kHz regardless of duty ratio. Frequency distortion was observed within 5% of inflection point at frequencies above 10kHz regardless of duty ratio, but it was judged negligible. Spectra showed a normal distribution, and maximum PPF with duty ratio of 100% was $271.4{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ for the Red+Blue combination. PPF of the Red+Blue+Green combination was $258.9{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, and that of the Red+Blue+White combination was $273.9{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. PPF of the Red+Blue+UV combination was $267.7{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. Uniformity ratio for the area excepting border showed 0.90 for the Red+Blue and Red+Blue+White combinations, 0.87 for the Red+Blue+Green combination, and 0.88 for the Red+Blue+UV combination. The light was irradiated evenly at the area excepting border, so it was suitable for plant growing. Conclusions: From the results of this study, response characteristics of the control system, spectral distribution of each combination, light uniformity and uniformity ratio were suitable for applying into the plant factory.

  • In this paper, the hybrid illumination system for effectively detecting surface defects in steel plate with lowcontrast, non-uniformity and featureless is designed based on illuminance uniformity. First of all, characteristics of steel plate defects were considered and typical inspection illumination system is implemented. Optimum illumination parameters for uniformly illuminating an inspection area in the typical illumination system are selected based on the illuminance uniformity and illuminance distribution measurement. The illuminance uniformity and illuminance distribution are measured using an illuminometer based on the arduino. Through illuminance distribution analysis of the typical illumination, an hybrid illumination is designed by fusing bi-directional illumination and coaxial illumination. The hybrid illumination showed higher uniformity ratio and illuminance distribution than the typical illuminations. The hybrid illumination system showed the ability to uniformly illuminate the entire inspection region of steel plate surface.

  • The effects of carburizing pressure and gas ratio on vacuum carburizing properties (uniformity and surface characteristics) have been studied through the analyses of carbon concentration, hardness, surface color, surface roughness and type of carbon bonding. AISI 4115 steel specimens were carburized with various pressures (1, 5, and 10 Torr) at different locations (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6) inside a furnace held at 950 ℃. Since the carburizing pressure represents the density of the carburizing gas, it plays an important role in improving the carburizing uniformity according to locations in the furnace. As the carburizing pressure increased, the carburizing uniformity according to the sample location was improved, but the surface of the carburized specimen was discolored due to the residual acetylene gas, which does not contribute to the carburizing reaction. Therefore, the carburizing uniformity and surface discoloration have been improved by injecting acetylene gas (carburizing gas) and nitrogen gas (non-reactive gas) in a specific ratio.

  • In order to improve hardness uniformity of standard-hardness blocks. experimental procedure was designed using Taguchi Method. For this purpose the following factors were studied: austenitizing temperature, tempering condition, grinding condition, subzero treatment, lapping time, $15{\mu}m$ polishing time, final polishing time. These factors were processed and then ten hardness values were measured on each specimen. SN (signal to noise) ratio for each condition was calculated with standard variations of these values. Finally, from the calculated value of ANOVA on SN ratios, the lapping time was found to be the main factor Better uniformity with longer lapping time implies that residual stress that was formed after quenching is a dominent parameter that affects on the uniformity of hardness. Therefore, step-quenching method was adapted to minimize the residual stress. By this modification of quenching procedure, the hardness uniformity was improved remarkably and the yield ratio was increased from 55% to 88%.

  • Theoretical calculations for the secondary current distributions for the electrode with a projection part in electroplating were performed. Two kinds of electrodes were considered. One is a electrode with the overall conducting surfaces(Case 1) and the other is an electrode in which only a projection part has a conducting surface(Case 2). The effects of applied potential, the ratio of ion exchange current to conductivity, $\xi$ and the aspect ratio on the current distribution were examined. The increase of applied current or the value of $\xi$ decreased the uniformity of current distribution. The small value of aspect ratio resulted the more uniform current distribution and Case 2 showed the better uniformity than Case 2. When this model was applied into an electrode with various projection parts, the local current distribution along the electrode surface were obtained successfully. In this case, the decrease of $\xi$ also increase the uniformity of current distribution as seen previously.

  • The apron is one of the essential protectors to reduce the exposure dose of radiological technologists. This study is to provide a guideline for purchasing the aprons with excellent performance and to help reducing the exposure dose by measuring the shielding ration and uniformity of aprons according to lead equivalent and form types. The shielding ratio of aprons were measured by using radiation generator and dosimeter. Exposure conditions were 81 kVp, 25 mAs, source to image receptor distance (SID) 100 cm and field of view (FOV) $17^{{\prime}{\prime}}{\times}17^{{\prime}{\prime}}$. Exposure areas for front type and around type aprons were divided into 9 areas and for 2 pieces type aprons were divided into 3 areas of top and 4 areas of skirt. The uniformity of aprons were measured by using fluoroscopy and Image J. The 4 regions of interest (ROI) were set into acquired images and measured uniformity by measuring the standard deviation of pixel intensity in ROIs. In continuous shielding ration measurement of aprons according to exposure area, there was not statistical significance (P>0.05). In ANOVA test of aprons, there was statistical significance (P<0.01). In the results of sheilding ratio, although the aprons had equal lead equivalent, there were difference in shielding ratio from 83.59% to 98.15%. In the results of uniformity, the front type aprons with equal lead equivalent indicated the similar uniformity. However, the around type and 2 pieces type apron with equal lead equivalent indicated the different uniformity each other, from 1.8 to 22.2. If the performance evaluation in this study were conducted regularly before and after purchase the aprons, the exposure does to patients and radiological technologists could be reduced.
