  • As the size of semiconductors becomes smaller, it is necessary to perform high precision polishing of nanoscale. Ceria, which is generally used as an abrasive, is widely used because of its uniform quality, but its stability is not high because it has a high molecular weight and causes agglomeration and rapid precipitation. Such agglomeration and precipitation causes scratches in the polishing process. Therefore, it is important to accurately analyze the size distribution of ceria particles. In this study, a study was conducted to select dispersants useful for preventing coagulation and sedimentation of ceria. First, a dispersant was synthesized and a ceria slurry was prepared. The defoamer selection experiment was performed in order to remove the air bubbles which may occur in the production of ceria slurry. Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation (AsFlFFF) were used to determine the size distribution of ceria particles in the slurry. AsFlFFF is a technique for separating nanoparticles based on sequential elution of samples as in chromatography, and is a useful technique for determining the particle size distribution of nanoparticle samples. AsFlFFF was able to confirm the presence of a little quantities of large particles in the vicinity of 300 nm, which DLS can not detect, besides the main distribution in the range of 60-80 nm. AsFlFFF showed better accuracy and precision than DLS for particle size analysis of a little quantities of large particles such as ceria slurry treated in this study.

  • Direct synthesis of graphene using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been considered a facile way to produce large-area and uniform graphene film, which is an accessible method from an application standpoint. Hence, their fundamental understanding is highly required. Unfortunately, the CVD growth mechanism of graphene on Cu remains elusive and controversial. Here, we present the evidences for two different growth modes of graphene on Cu investigated by varying carbon feedstock (C2H2 and CH4) and working pressure. The number of uniform graphene layer grown by C2H2 increased with increasing its injection time. A combined secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) study revealed a carbon-diffused Cu layer created below surface region of Cu substrate with the expansion of Cu lattice. The graphene on Cu was grown by the diffusion and precipitation mode not by the surface adsorption mode, because similar results were observed in graphene/Ni system. The carbon-diffused Cu layer was also observed after graphene growth under high CH4 pressure. Based on various previous results and ours, we have successfully found that there are two selective growth modes for graphene on Cu substrate, and a desired mode can be chosen by tuning working pressure corresponding to the kind of carbon feedstock. We believe that this finding will shed light on high quality graphene growth and its multifaceted applications.

  • For the homogeneous dispersion of $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ceramics, Zr-precusors were mixed with oxide $Al_2O_3$powders by chemical routes such as partial precipitation or partial polymerization of Zr-nitrate solutions. In case of the mechanical mixing of ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$ oxide powders, relatively homogeneous dispersion was difficult to achieve so that the particle size and distributions of $ZrO_2$ were relatively inhomogeneous after sintering at high temperature. But when the Zr-Y-hydroxide were co-precipitated to ultrafine $Al_2O_3$ oxide powders followed by calcinations, homogeneous dispersion of nano-sized $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3/ZrO_2$ composite ceramics were obtained. But because of the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ particles, dispersed $ZrO_2$ was grown up to more than 0.2${mu}m$ (200 nm) when sintered at the temperature of higher than $1500^{\circ}C$ But when the sintering temperature was kept to lower than $1400^{\circ}C$ by using nano-sized $\alpha-alumina$, the particle size of dispersed $ZrO_2$ could be sustained below 0.1 ${\mu}m$. But the coalescence of dispersed $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles could not be avoided so that the mechanical properties were not enhanced contrary to the expectations. So Zr-polyester precursors were precipitated and coated to the surface of ultrafine $\alpha-alumina$ powders by the polymerization of Ethylene Glycol with Citric Acid and Zirconium Nitrate. By this dispersion much more uniform dispersion of $ZrO_2$ was achieved at $1450\~1600^{\circ}C$ of sintering temperature ranges. And due to especially discrete dispersion of $ZrO_2$ between $Al_2O_3$ particles, their mechanical strength was more enhanced than mechanical mixing or hydroxide precipitation methods.

  • Li3V2(PO4)3 and Li3V2(PO4)3/C composite with single phase monoclinic structure for the cathode materials are successfully synthesized by direct co-precipitation method using N2H4·H2O as the reducing agent and alginic acid as the carbon source, and their electrochemical properties were compared. The particles with approximately 1~2 ㎛ size and the uniform spherical-like morphology of the narrow particle size distribution were obtained. In addition, the residual carbon can also improve the electrical conductivity. The Li3V2(PO4)3/C composite has improved initial specific discharge capacity and excellent cycle characteristics to maintain capacity stably than Li3V2(PO4)3. The results indicate that the reducing agent and carbon composite can affect the good crystallinity and electrochemical performance of the cathode materials.

  • The spatial and temporal non-uniform distribution of precipitation makes water management difficult. Due to climate change, nonuniform distribution of precipitation is worsening, and droughts and floods are occurring frequently. Additionally, the intensity of droughts and floods is intensifying, making existing water management systems difficult. From June 2022 to June 2023, most of the water storage rates of major dams in the Yeongsan river and Seomjin river basin were below 30%. In the case of Juam dam, which is the most dependent on water use in the basin, the water storage rate fell to 20.3%, the lowest ever. Pyeongnim dam recorded the lowest water storage rate of 27.3% on May 4, 2023. Due to a lack of precipitation starting in the spring of 2022, Pyeongnim dam was placed at a drought concern level on June 19, 2022, and entered the severe drought level on August 21. Pyeongrim dam and Suyangje(dam) have different operating institutions. Nevertheless, the low water level was not reached at Pyeongnim dam through organic linkage operation in a drought situation. Pyeongnim dam was able to stably supply water to 63,000 people in three counties. In order to maximize the use of limited water resources, we must review ways to move water smoothly between basins and water sources, and prepare for water shortages caused by climate change by establishing a consumer-centered water supply system.

  • Highly uniform and well-dispersed Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-7 (ZIF-7) particles were prepared by the precipitation of $Zn^{2+}$ using benzimidazole, which were converted into ZnO nanoparticles by heat treatment at $500^{\circ}C$ for 24 h. The ZIF-7 derived ZnO nanoparticles showed abundant mesopores, high surface area, and good dispersion. The gas sensing characteristics toward 5 ppm acetone, ethanol, trimethylamine, ammonia, p-xylene, toluene, benzene, and carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide were investigated at $350-450^{\circ}C$. ZIF-7 derived ZnO nanoparticles exhibited high response to 5 ppm acetone ($R_a/R_g=57.6$; $R_a$: resistance under exposure to the air, Rg: resistance under exposure to the gas) at $450^{\circ}C$ and negligible cross-responses to other interference gases (trimethylamine, ammonia, p-xylene, toluene, benzene, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide) and relatively low responses to ethanol. ZIF derived synthesis of metal oxide nanoparticles can be used to design high performance acetone sensors.

  • We have studied the iron uptake by the purified brush-border membrane vesicles (BBMVs) to determine the effect of fructose on the absorption of iron. BBMVs were prepared by the modified calcium precipitation method, The degree of purification was routinely assessed by the marker enzyme, alkaline phosphatase, and the functional integrity was tested by $D-[1-^3H]glucose$ uptake. The appearance of membrane vesicles was shown by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The uptakes of complexes of labeled iron $[^{59}Fe]$ with fructose and ascorbate were measured with a rapid filtration technique, The uptake rate and pattern of the two iron-complexes, Fe(III)-fructose and Fe(III)-ascorbate, were also observed. A typical overshooting uptake of D-glucose was observed with peak value of $2{\sim}3$ times higher concentration than that at equilibrium. This result was similar to other studies with BBMVs. TEM showed that the size of BBMVs was uniform and we can hardly find any contaminants, Fe(III)-fructose has the higher value of $V_{max}$ and the lower value of Km than those of Fe(III)-ascorbate, respectively. It may be concluded that D-fructose is more effective in promoting the iron absorption than ascorbate.

  • Polar rain is a spatially uniform precipitation of electrons with energies around 100eV that penetrate into the polar cap region where geomagnetic field lines are connected to the Interplanetary Magnetic Fields (IMF). Since their occurrences depend on the IMF sector polarity, they are believed to originate from the field aligned component of the solar wind. However, statistically direct correlation between polar rain and solar wind has not been shown. In this presentation, we examined specifically the IMF strength influence on the polar rain flux variation by classifying of IMF sector polarities. For this study, we employed the polar rain flux data measured by STSAT-1 and compared them with the solar wind parameters obtained from the WIND and ACE satellites. We found the direct mutuality between polar rain flux and IMF strength with correlation coefficient above 0.5. This proportional tendency appears stronger when the northern hemisphere is in the away sector of the IMF, which could be associated with a favorable geometry for magnetic reconnection. Simple particle trajectory simulation clearly shows why polar rain intensity depends on the IMF sector polarity. These results are consistent with the direct entry model of Fairfield et al.(1985), while low correlation coefficient with solar wind density, the similarity between slops of both energy spectra shows that transport process occur without acceleration.

  • Effect of calcining temperature on the sintering behaviors and microwave dielectric properties of BMT[Ba(Mg1/3Ta2/3)O3] ceramics was studied. The calcining temperatures were varied from 80$0^{\circ}C$ to 130$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. It was found that, as calcining temperature lowered below 125$0^{\circ}C$, second phase such as Ba5Ta4O15 phases started to appear in calcined powder with unreacted powders. After sintering, exaggerately grown Ba5TaO3 phase could be found amang the uniform BMT grains in sintered body. Basis on the infiltration experiment, Ba0.05TaO3 phase should be formed by reaction of BMT grain and BaO-MgO eutectic liquid. But increase of calcining temperature above 125$0^{\circ}C$, there was not any second phase or unreated component in calcined powder and sintered body. As result, low calcining temperature led to precipitation of second phase in specimen and resulted decrease of Q value of BMT ceramics.

  • $Ce_{0.8}Gd_{0.2}O_{1.9}$(GDC20) powder was prepared from a mixture of submicron-sized $CeO_2$ powder and Gd precipitates using ammonium carbonate $((NH_4)_2CO_3)$ as a precipitant. The mixture was calcined at $700^{\circ}C$ for 4 h followed by ball-milling that resulted in the GDC powder with an average particle size of $0.46{\mu}m$. The powder had a very uniform particle size distribution with particle sizes ranging from $0.3{\mu}m$ to $1{\mu}m$. Sintering of undoped GDC samples did not show a relative density of 99.2% until the temperature was increased to $1500^{\circ}C$, whereas GDC samples doped with 5 mol% CoO exhibited a significant densification at lower temperature reaching a relative density of 97.6% at $1100^{\circ}C$ and of 98.8% at $1200^{\circ}C$.
