  • With the rapid increase in the number of patients with cardiopulmonary diseases, more cardiopulmonary circulatory assist devices are also needed. These devices can be employed when heart and/or lung function poorly. Due to the critical role they take, these devices have to be designed optimally from both mechanical and biomechanical aspects. This paper presents the CFD results of a baseline model of a centrifugal blood pump for the ECMO condition. The details of flow characteristics of the baseline model together with the performance curves and the modified index of hemolysis(MIH) are investigated. Then, the geometry of baseline impeller and the volute are modified in order to improve the biomechanical performance and reduce the MIH value. The numerical simulations of two cases represent that when impeller radius and prime volume decrease the MIH value also decreases. In addition, the modified geometry shows more uniform pressure distribution inside the volute. The findings provide valuable information for further modification and improvement of centrifugal blood pumps from both mechanical and biomechanical aspects.

  • In this study, we investigate the performance variations of an automotive turbocharger compressor with respect to the height variation of the recirculating casing treatment (RCT). We use three RCT heights, namely 1.2 mm, 1.5 mm, and 1.8 mm. We vary the compressor speed from 90,000 to 150,000 rpm, and the flow rate from 0.015 kg/s to 0.08 kg/s. The calculation results of the total pressure ratio and isentropic efficiency showed good agreement with the performance data provided by the manufacturer within a 0.7 percent error. The results showed that the RCT heights of 1.2 mm, 1.8 mm, and 1.5 mm, in that order, exhibited a more uniform pressure distribution, higher pressure ratio, and wider operational range. As the number of revolutions per minute increased, we obtained typical characteristics of a compressor map having a narrower operational range in the region of higher pressure ratio.

  • MILD (Moderate and Intense Low Oxygen Dilution) combustion is a technique which is able to reduce NOx formation and to uniform temperature distribution in the furnace by recirculating the exhaust gas to the fresh air and fuel. This study focuses on finding optimal condition of MILD combustor by changing equivalence ratio with fuel and air flow. The present experiment employs six thermocouple sensors in the furnace, and two concentration probes of NOx and CO at the exhaust exit pipe respectively. The MILD combustion phenomena have been observed at the condition of equivalent ratios of 0.71~0.73, and the temperature uniformity, NOx and CO concentration are also examined at the MILD combustion condition.

  • In a mass manufacturing system of optical fibers, the sufficient cooling of glass fibers freshly drawn from a draw furnace is essential, asinadequately cooled glass fibers can lead to poor resin coating on the fiber surface and possibly fiber breakage during the process. In order to improve fiber cooling at a high drawing speed, it is common to use a helium injection into a glass fiber cooling unit in spite of the high cost of the helium supply. The present numerical analysis carried out three-dimensional thermo-fluid computations of the cooling gas flow and heat transfer on moving glass fiber to determine the cooling performance of glass fiber cooling depending on the method of helium injection. The results showed that afront injection of helium is most effective compared to a uniform or rear injection for reducing air entrainment into the unit and thus cooling the glass fibers at a high fiber drawing speed. However, above a certain amount of injected helium, there was no more increase of the cooling effect regardless of the helium injection method.

  • A study on a buoyancy effect by the temperature difference between a inner room air and a inflowing cool air and also by Inlet velocity can contribute greatly to enhance performance of air conditioning system, so the study on the distribution characteristics of inflowed cool air is important to analyze the cool air storage in a room. For this study, in the real-sized model room, the temperature differences between inflowing cool air and inner room air are 10, 20, $30^{\circ}C$, and the inlet velocities of inflowing cool air are 1, 2, 3m/s respectively as dynamic parameters. Also, a anemos and a vane type diffuser are used as inlet geometric conditions. Following conclusions have been obtained through this study. 1) In case of the anemos type diffuser, it is found that a dimensionless temperature profile is low and the distribution of the inflowed cool air is uniform. and also, all diffuusers have a low temperature of the inner room as increasing the inlet velocity. 2) A mixing takes place rapidly in case of the anemos type diffuser when the temperature difference is low ${\Delta}T=10^{\circ}C$ and the inletvelocity is high V=3m/s. and the mixing degree is higher with the anemos type diffuser than the vane.

  • The degree of purification and the macrostructure of high purity aluminium were studied through the alternate stirring method in order to improve the nonuniformity of solute concentration in the unidirectional stirring method. The $2^3$ factorial design was done to examine the effects of experimental factors more qualitatively. In the relatively low stirring speed of 1500 rpm with alternate stirring mode, the uniform solute profile and refined grain structure were obtained due to strong washing effect and turbulent fluid flow. It was induced by the transition of the momentum boundary layer by alternation of the stirrer. It was concluded from this study that the alternate stirring mode was more effective to obtain the uniformity of solute even in the stirring speed of 1500 rpm. But the degree of purification decreased below the critical alternating period. When 2N(99.8wt.%) aluminium was used as the starting material the morphology of solid-liquid showed the cellular shape and the columnar grains were inclined to the direction of rotation. This inclined grain growth resulted from the difference of relative velocities of solid and liquid. The inclined angle was increased as the stirring speed increased and solidification proceeded. In the case of 4N aluminium, there was no inclined grain growth and it was confirmed from the macrostructure and SEM work that the morphology of solid-liquid interface was planar. From the factorial design, it was found that the alternate stirring mode showed poorer purification effect than that of unidirectional stirring mode at low speed(500 rpm). In addition, the factor that had the most significant effect on the degree of purification was the stirring speed.

  • The boundary element method is applied to determine thermal stress intensity factors for a cusp crack in transient state. In the steady temperature field, numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for a Grifith crack and a symmetric lip cusp crack in a finite body are in good agreement within .+-. 5% with the previous solutions. In transient state, the numerical values of thermal stress intensity factors for the Griffith crack are also in good agreement with the pervious solutions. In both steady and transient states, those for the symmetric lip cusp crack with the crack surface insulated or fixed to the constant temperature are calculates for various effective crack lengths, configuration parameters and uniform heat flow angles. The variations of the thermal boundary conditions of the crack surface have a effect on stress intensity factors. The signs on the values of thermal stress intensity factors can be changed in time variation.

  • Direct synthesis of graphene using a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) has been considered a facile way to produce large-area and uniform graphene film, which is an accessible method from an application standpoint. Hence, their fundamental understanding is highly required. Unfortunately, the CVD growth mechanism of graphene on Cu remains elusive and controversial. Here, we present the effect of graphene growth parameters on the number of graphene layers were systematically studied and growth mechanism on copper substrate was proposed. Parameters that could affect the thickness of graphene growth include the pressure in the system, gas flow rate, growth pressure, growth temperature, and cooling rate. We hypothesis that the partial pressure of both the carbon sources and hydrogen gas in the growth process, which is set by the total pressure and the mole fraction of the feedstock, could be the factor that controls the thickness of the graphene. The graphene on Cu was grown by the diffusion and precipitation mode not by the surface adsorption mode, because similar results were observed in graphene/Ni system. The carbon-diffused Cu layer was also observed after graphene growth under high CH4 pressure. Our findings may facilitate both the large-area synthesis of well-controlled graphene features and wide range of applications of graphene.

  • Zirconia thin films of uniform structure were fabricated by plasma-enhanced metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. Deposition conditions such as substrate temperature were observed to have much influence on the formation of zirconia films, therefore the mechanism of decomposition of $Zr[TMHD]_4$precursor and film growth were examined by XRD, FT-IR etc., as well as the determination of the optimal deposition condition. From temperature dependence on zirconia, below the deposition temperature of 523K, the amorphous zirconia was formed while the crystalline of zirconia with preferred orientation of cubic (200) was obtained above the temperature. Deposits at low temperatures were investigated by FT-IR and the absorption band of films revealed that the zirconia thin film was in amorphous structure and has the same organic band as that of Zr precursor. In case of high temperature, it was found that Zr precursor was completely decomposed and crystalline zirconia was obtained. In addition, at 623K the higher RF power yielded the increased crystallinity of zirconia implying an increase in decomposition rate of precursor. However, it seems that RF power has nothing with the zirconia deposition process at 773K. It was found that the proper bubbler temperature of TEX>$Zr[TMHD]<_4$ precursor is needed along with high flow rate of carrier gas. Through AFM analysis it was determined that the growth mechanism of the zirconia thin film showed island model.
