The effects of austenitizing temperature in a range of $1000{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$ on the corrosion resistance in 420J2 stainless steel tempered at $150^{\circ}C$ were investigated by an electrochemical uniform corrosion test in a solution of 0.5M $H_2S0_4$. Pitting test and DL-EPR test for intergranular corrosion were carried out in a solution of 3.5% NaCl and 0.5M $H_2S0_4$ + 0.01 M KSCN respectively. In uniform corrosion test, specimens austenitized below $1100^{\circ}C$ showed similar corrosion current density and passive current density, whereas specimens austenitized at $1150^{\circ}C$ showed a little higher values. Pitting potential slightly increased with an increase of austenitizing temperature. The degree of sensitization, DOS, also slightly increased with an increase of austenitizing temperature, reaching the highest degree at $1150^{\circ}C$. It was expected that the increase of DOS was due to the larger grain size rather than the dissolved precipitates in the matrix.
The corrosion of metals and alloys in flowing liquids can be classified into uniform corrosion and localized corrosion which may be categorized as follows. (1) Localized corrosion of the erosion-corrosion type: the protective oxide layer is assumed to be removed from the metal surface by shear stress or turbulence of the fluid flow. A macro-cell may be defined as a situation in which the bare surface is the macro-anode and the other surface covered with the oxide layer is the macro-cathode. (2) Localized corrosion of the differential flow-velocity corrosion type: at a location of lower fluid velocity, a thin and coarse oxide layer with poor protective qualities may be produced because of an insufficient supply of oxygen. A macro-cell may be defined as a situation in which this surface is the macro-anode and the other surface covered with a dense and stable oxide layer is the macro-cathode. (3) Localized corrosion of the active/passive-cell type: on a metal surface a macro-cell may be defined as a situation in which a part of it is in a passivation state and another in an active dissolution state. This situation may arise from differences in temperature as well as in the supply of the dissolved oxygen. Compared to uniform corrosion, localized corrosion tends to involve a higher wall thinning rate (corrosion rate) due to the macro-cell current as well as to the ratio of the surface area of the macro-anode to that of the macro-cathode, which may be rationalized using potential vs. current density diagrams. The three types of localized corrosion described above can be reproduced in a Jet-in-slit test by changing the flow direction of the test liquid and arranging environmental conditions in an appropriate manner.
Effects of austenite on the uniform corrosion in the solution of $1\;N\;H_2SO_4$ were investigated through the electrochemical polarization test. Two phases structures of martensite and austenite were obtained by annealing treatment at the range of $500^{\circ}C{\sim}700^{\circ}C$ for 10min. in 70% cold-rolled 202 stainless steel. Volume fraction of reversed austenite increased rapidly with an increase of annealing temperature. Uniform Corrosion was occur mainly on martensite phase in 202 austenitic stainless steel with two phase of austenite and martensite. Corrosion current density increased with an increase of volume fraction of austenite, therefore uniform corrosion was affected by volume fraction of austenite
In this study, we investigated the corrosion damage characteristics of steel for offshore wind turbine tower substructure using an accelerated electrochemical test. The galvanostatic corrosion test method was employed with a conventional 3 electrode cell in natural sea water, and the steel specimen was served as a working electrode to induce corrosion in an accelerated manner. Surface and cross-sectional image of the damaged area were obtained by optical microscope and scanning electron microscope. The weight of the specimens was measured to determine the gravimetric change before and after corrosion test. The result revealed that the steel tended to suffer uniform corrosion rather than localized corrosion due to active dissolution reaction under the constant current regime. With increasing galvanostatic current density, the damage depth and surface roughness of surface was increased, showing approximately 25 times difference in damage depth between the lowest current density ($1mA/cm^2$) and the highest current density ($200mA/cm^2$). The gravimetric observation showed that the weight loss was proportionally increased with increment of current density that has 75 times different according by experimental conditions. Consequently, uniform corrosion of the steel specimen was conveniently induced by the electrochemically accelerated corrosion technique, and it was possible to control the extent of the corrosion damage by varying the current density.
440A martensitic stainless steels which were modified with reduced carbon content(~0.5%) and addition of small amount of nickel, vanadium, tungsten and molybdenum were manufactured. Effects of alloying elements and tempering temperatures on the uniform corrosion in the solution of lN H2S04 were investigated through the electrochemical polarization test. When tempering temperature is constant, corrosion current density in active-passive transition point, Icorr, decreased a little with an increase of austenitizing temperature. In addition to this, when austenitizing temperature is constant, longer holding time showed a little lower Icorr and Ipass, passive current density. And when austenitized at $1050^{\circ}C$ and tempered in a range of $350{\sim}750^{\circ}C$, best anti-corrosion properties were obtained at $350^{\circ}C$ tempering temperature while worst at $450^{\circ}C$ or $550^{\circ}C$. The specimens tempered at below $450^{\circ}C$ and above $550^{\circ}C$, similar and good anti-corrosion characteristics were obtained regardless of alloying elements added, showing anti-corrosion characteristics are influenced more by tempering temperature than by alloying elements.

This research aims to study an effect of sodium chloride solution concentration on the corrosion rate of AA1100 aluminium alloy and SGACD zinc coated steel lap joint with a test duration of 30 days and a test temperature of $45^{\circ}$. The summarized results are as follows. Increase of the NaCl solution concentration increased the weight loss of Al, corrosion rate of Al, weight loss of Fe and also decreased the corrosion rate of Fe. Increase of the test duration affected to increase the weight loss and corrosion rate of Al and also decrease the weight loss and corrosion rate of Fe. The corrosion that was formed in a lap joint consisted of the uniform corrosion on the surface of the metals and the galvanic corrosion in the lap area of the joint. The maximum weight loss of AA 1100 aluminium and SGACD zinc coated steel that was occurred in the sodium chloride with 3.25% was 2.203% and 3.208%, respectively.. The maximum corrosion rate of AA 1100 aluminium and SGACD zinc coated steel that was occurred in 4.00% and 3.5% sodium chloride solution was 0.156 mm/year and 0.479 mm/year, respectively.

Metal containers represent a situation where a specific metal is exposed to a wide variety of electrolytes of varying degrees of corrosivity. For example, hundreds, if not thousands of different products are packaged in an aluminum beverage can. These products vary in pH, chloride concentration and other natural or artificial ingredients which can effect the type and severity of potential corrosion. Both localized (perforation) and uniform corrosion (metal dissolution without the onset of pitting) may occur in the can. A quick test or series of tests which could predict the propensity towards both types of corrosion would be useful to the manufacturer. Electrochemical noise data is used to detect the onset and continuation of pitting corrosion. Specific noise parameters such as the noise resistance (the potential noise divided by the current noise) have been used to both detect pitting corrosion and also to estimate the pitting severity. The utility of noise resistance and other electrochemical parameters has been explored through the application of artificial neural networks. The versatility of artificial neural networks is further demonstrated by combing electrochemical data with electrolyte properties such as pH and chloride concentration to predict both the severity of both localized and uniform corrosion.
This paper investigated the characteristics of anodized aluminum 6061-T6 alloy for corrosion and stress corrosion cracking(SCC) under natural seawater. The hard anodizing oxide film formed on the 6061-T6 was a uniform thickness of about 25 ㎛. The corrosion characteristics were performed with a potentiodynamic polarization test. SCC was characterized by a slow strain rate tensile test under 0.005mm/min rate. As a result, the anodizing film showed no significant effect on SCC in the slow strain rate test. However, the corrosion current density of base metal was measured to be approximately 13 times higher than that of the anodized specimen. Therefore, the anodizing film significantly improved the corrosion resistance of 6061-T6 alloy in natural seawater.
The carboxylates as a corrosion inhibitor has been studied by many researchers because of its environmental safety and low depletion rate. However, conventional test methods of inhibitor such as weight loss measurements, linear polarization resistance and corrosion potential monitoring etc., evaluate uniform corrosion of metals. These methods are unable to evaluate crevice-related corrosions, which are encountered in most of heat exchanging facilities. In order to choose the optimum corrosion inhibitor, the appropriate test methods are required to evaluate their performances in service environment. From this point of view, polarization technique was used to evaluate the characteristics of sodium heptanoate on corrosion behavior for carbon steel. Especially a thin film crevice sensor technique were applied to simulate the crevice corrosion in this study. From these experiments, we found that oxygen as an oxidizing agent was required to obtain stable passive film on the metal. Presence of oxygen, however, accelerated crevice corrosion. Potential shift by oxygen depletion and weakened inhibitive film inside the crevice were responsible for such accelerated feature. It is shown that film for corrosion inhibition is a mixture of sodium heptanoate and iron (II) heptanoate as reaction product of iron surface and sodium heptanoate. The iron (II) heptanoate which has been synthesized by reaction of heptanoic acid and ferrous chloride in methanol solution forms bidentate complex.
This paper was studied on the electrochemical corrosion characteristics of weld zone for refrigerating and heating systems pipe. Austenitic stainless steel is widely applied to various fields of industry, because it is good to corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. But STS 304 is reliable to sensitization by heat cycle on welding. Therefore, in this study, electrochemical polarization test of STS 304 steel pipe manufactured by arc welding in tap water was carried out. And then polarization resistance behavior, uniform and local corrosion behaviors of base metal(BM), weld metal(WM) and heat affected zone(HAZ) for STS 304 pipe were investigated. The corrosion current density of STS 304 steel pipe is high in order of BM(153nA/cm2) < WM(614nA/cm2) < HAZ ($1.675{\mu}A/cm2$). The pitting potential of HAZ(238mV/SCE) for STS 304 is lower than BM(1206mV/SCE) and WM(369mV/SCE). Therefore, the local corrosion like pitting corrosion, galvanic corrosion and crevice corrosion of HAZ for STS 304 is more sensitive than BM and WM.
