PRESSURE BASED ROUTING PROTOCOL FOR UNDERWATER WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS: A SURVEY

  • Underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs) are similar to the terrestrial sensor networks. Nevertheless, there are different characteristics among them such as low battery power, limited bandwidth and high variable propagation delay. One of the common major problems in UWSNs is determining an efficient and reliable routing between the source node and the destination node. Therefore, researchers tend to design efficient protocols with consideration of the different characteristics of underwater communication. Furthermore, many routing protocols have been proposed and these protocols may be classified as location-based and location-free routing protocols. Pressure-based routing protocols are a subcategory of the location-free routing protocols. This paper focuses on reviewing the pressure-based routing protocols that may further be classified into non-void avoidance protocols and void avoidance protocols. Moreover, non-void avoidance protocols have been classified into single factor based and multi factor based routing protocols. Finally, this paper provides a comparison between these protocols based on their features, performance and simulation parameters and the paper concludes with some future works on which further study can be conducted.

  • Data transmission in poor environment like underwater has considerably serious delay rate and ewer rate. Like this environment usually has heavy fluctuation of error rate and limited wireless communication state. Therefore, mechanism using in such environment has to be efficient and simple. This paper suggests a new block ack mechanism, called the Pervasive Block ACK (PBA), which transmits aggregated ACKs. This mechanism takes effect on reducing number of traffic, decreasing overhead and delay rate in poor environment networks like underwater. Additionally, we can expect energy consumption. We verify propriety and efficiency of PBA through describing numerical result based analytical formula in this paper.

  • It is very difficult to design an underwater communication system because of multipath, Doppler effects, noise, and attenuation. These factors lead to errors in the communication performance and maximum propagation distance. In this study, we calculate the distance that can be realized using the direct-sequence code division multiple access (DS-CDMA) technique with direct-sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) in an underwater communication system considering only the attenuation and noise. We also compare the estimated and calculated propagation distances obtained for several different scenarios.

Photo-Transistors Based on Bulk-Heterojunction Organic Semiconductors for Underwater Visible-Light Communications (가시광 수중 무선통신을 위한 이종접합 유기물 반도체 기반 고감도 포토트랜지스터 연구)

  • Underwater wireless communication is a challenging issue for realizing the smart aqua-farm and various marine activities for exploring the ocean and environmental monitoring. In comparison to acoustic and radio frequency technologies, the visible light communication is the most promising method to transmit data with a higher speed in complex underwater environments. To send data at a speedier rate, high-performance photodetectors are essentially required to receive blue and/or cyan-blue light that are transmitted from the light sources in a light-fidelity (Li-Fi) system. Here, we fabricated high-performance organic phototransistors (OPTs) based on P-type donor polymer (PTO2) and N-type acceptor small molecule (IT-4F) blend semiconductors. Bulk-heterojunction (BHJ) PTO2:IT-4F photo-active layer has a broad absorption spectrum in the range of 450~550 nm wavelength. Solution-processed OPTs showed a high photo-responsivity >1,000 mA/W, a large photo-sensitivity >103, a fast response time, and reproducible light-On/Off switching characteristics even under a weak incident light. BHJ organic semiconductors absorbed photons and generated excitons, and efficiently dissociated to electron and hole carriers at the donor-acceptor interface. Printed and flexible OPTs can be widely used as Li-Fi receivers and image sensors for underwater communication and underwater internet of things (UIoTs).

  • In underwater wireless sensor networks, sensing data such temperature and salinity can be merged by averaging them. Data aggregation is a good choice to reduce the amount of packets and save energy in underwater wireless sensor networks. However, data aggregation could bring about packet delay and non-directional transmission to the sink. In this paper, we propose a new path building algorithm based on data aggregation to mitigate these problems. The paper reduces the delay without wireless interferences and maximizes the energy efficiency by removing the non-directional transmission to the sink. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms in terms of the energy efficiency and the packet delay.

Development of a Real-time Radiation Level Monitoring Sensor for Building an Underwater Radiation Monitoring System (수중 방사선 감시체계 구축을 위한 실시간 방사선 준위 모니터링 센서 개발)

  • In the present study, we developed a real-time radiation-monitoring sensor for an underwater radiation-monitoring system and evaluated its effectiveness using reference radiation sources. The monitoring sensor was designed and miniaturized using a silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) and a cerium-doped-gadolinium-aluminum-gallium-garnet (Ce:GAGG) scintillator, and an underwater wireless monitoring system was implemented by employing a remote Bluetooth communication module. An acrylic water tank and reference radiation sources ($^{137}Cs$, $^{90}Sr$) were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the monitoring sensor. The underwater monitoring sensor's detection response and efficiency for gamma rays and beta particles as well as the linearity of the response according to the gammaray intensity were verified through an evaluation. This evaluation is expected to contribute to the development of base technology for an underwater radiation-monitoring system.

  • For the underwater wireless sensor networks, we propose the packet transmission method which distinguishes more important packet than others. Because the ocean underwater transmission environments are extremely unstable, we use SON(Self Organizing Network) techniques to adapt to the constantly varying underwater acoustic communication channels and randomly deployed sensor nodes. Especially we suppose two kinds of packets which have different priorities, and through the simulations we show that high priority packets arrive at the source node faster than lower priority packets with a proposed scheme.

  • Wireless communication systems are inevitable for efficient underwater activities. Because of the poor propagation characteristics of light and electromagnetic waves, acoustic waves are generally used for the underwater wireless communication. Although there are many kinds of information type, visual images take an essential role especially for search and identification activities. For this reason, we developed an acoustic-based underwater image transmission system under a dual use technology project supported by MOCIE (Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy). For the application to complicated and time-varying underwater environments all-digital transmitter and receiver systems are investigated. Array acoustic transducers are used at the receiver, which have the center frequency of 32kHz and the bandwidth of 4kHz. To improve transmission speed and quality, various algorithms and systems are used. The system design techniques will be discussed in detail including image compression/ decompression system, adaptive beam- forming, fast RLS adaptive equalizer, ${\partial}/4$ QPSK (Quadrilateral Phase Shift Keying) modulator/demodulator, and convolution coding/ Viterbi.   • The underwater acoustic wireless communication networks are generally formed by the different autonomous underwater acoustic vehicles, and transceivers interconnected to the bottom of the ocean with battery deployed modems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has become the most popular modulation technique in underwater acoustic communication due to its high data transmission and robustness over other symmetrical modulation techniques. To maintain the operability of underwater acoustic communication networks, the power consumption of battery-operated transceivers becomes a vital necessity to be minimized. The OFDM technology has a major lack of peak to average power ratio (PAPR) which results in the consumption of more power, creating non-linear distortion and increasing the bit error rate (BER). To overcome this situation, we have contributed our symmetry research into three dimensions. Firstly, we propose a machine learning-based underwater acoustic communication system through long short-term memory neural network (LSTM-NN). Secondly, the proposed LSTM-NN reduces the PAPR and makes the system reliable and efficient, which turns into a better performance of BER. Finally, the simulation and water tank experimental data results are executed which proves that the LSTM-NN is the best solution for mitigating the PAPR with non-linear distortion and complexity in the overall communication system.

A Localization Algorithm for Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks Based on Ranging Correction and Inertial Coordination

  • Node localization is the basic task of underwater wireless sensor networks (UWSNs). Most of the existing underwater localization methods rely on ranging accuracy. Due to the special environment conditions in the ocean, beacon nodes are difficult to deploy accurately. The narrow bandwidth and high delay of the underwater acoustic communication channel lead to large errors. In order to reduce the ranging error and improve the positioning accuracy, we propose a localization algorithm based on ranging correction and inertial coordination. The algorithm can be divided into two parts, Range Correction based Localization algorithm (RCL) and Inertial Coordination based Localization algorithm (ICL). RCL uses the geometric relationship between the node positions to correct the ranging error and obtain the exact node position. However, when the unknown node deviates from the deployment area with the movement of the water flow, it cannot communicate with enough beacon nodes in a certain period of time. In this case, the node uses ICL algorithm to combine position data with motion information of neighbor nodes to update its position. The simulation results show that the proposed algorithm greatly improves the positioning accuracy of unknown nodes compared with the existing localization methods.
