In this paper, we present the development of P-SURO II hybrid AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) which can be operated in both of AUV and ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle) modes. In its AUV mode, the vehicle is supposed to carry out some of underwater missions which are difficult to be achieved in ROV mode due to the tether cable. To accomplish its missions such as inspection and maintenance of complex underwater structures in AUV mode, the vehicle is required to have high level of autonomy including environmental recognition, obstacle avoidance, autonomous navigation, and so on. In addition to its systematic development issues, some of algorithmic issues are also discussed in this paper. Various experimental studies are also presented to demonstrate these developed autonomy algorithms.

Passive sonar system forms the various beams in any desired directions to obtain the improvement in Signal-to-Noise(S/N) ratio, bearing detection and localization of targets, and the attenuation of interferences from other directions. Detection of modern underwater targets is becoming increasingly difficult as noise reduction technology leads to considerably low-level acoustic emissions. Therefore, the improvement of beamforming is very important to detect modern underwater targets at the long range in the complex environmental sea. Also, to react to the fast attack mobiles such as torpedoes, port and starboard discrimination is required to be performed very quickly. In this paper, we proposed the implementation of omnidirectional target bearing detector without port and starboard ambiguity to detect effectively the low-level underwater targets. The port and starboard discrimination is performed by cardioid processing and the improvement of beamforming utilizes the cross correlation matrix of individual hydrophone pairs of linear array sensors. The sea test result shows that the system implemented is good for the detection of the low-level underwater targets.

In active sonar field, a target detection and localization based on a distributed sensor network has been much studied for the underwater surveillance of the coast. Zhou et al. proposed a target localization method utilizing the positions of target-detected sensors in distributed sensor network which consists of detection-only sensors. In contrast with a conventional method, Zhou's method dose not require to estimate the propagation model parameters of detection signal. Also it needs the lower computational complexity, and to transmit less data between network nodes. However, it has large target localization error. So it has been modified for reducing localization error by Ryu. Modified Zhou's method has better estimation performance than Zhou's method, but still relatively large estimation error. In this paper, a target localization method based on modified Zhou's method is proposed for reducing the localization error. The proposed method utilizes the geometry of the positions of target-detected sensors and a line that represents the bearing of target, a line can be found by modified Zhou's method. This paper shows that the proposed method has better target position estimation performance than Zhou's and modified Zhou's method by computer simulations.
The increased use of unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) has led to the development of alternative navigational methods that do not employ acoustic beacons and dead reckoning sensors. This paper describes a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) scheme that uses range sonars mounted on a small UUV. A SLAM scheme is an alternative navigation method for measuring the environment through which the vehicle is passing and providing the relative position of the UUV. A technique for a SLAM algorithm that uses several ranging sonars is presented. This technique utilizes an unscented Kalman filter to estimate the locations of the UUV and surrounding objects. In order to work efficiently, the nearest neighbor standard filter is introduced as the data association algorithm in the SLAM for associating the stored targets returned by the sonar at each time step. The proposed SLAM algorithm was tested by experiments under various three degrees of freedom motion conditions. The results of these experiments showed that the proposed SLAM algorithm was capable of estimating the position of the UUV and the surrounding objects and demonstrated that the algorithm will perform well in various environments.
This paper proposes a method of underwater source localization using the wideband interference patterns matching. By matching two interference patterns in the spectrogram, it is estimated a ratio of the range from source to sensor5, and then this ratio is applied to the Apollonius circle. The Apollonius circle is defined as the locus of all points whose distances from two fixed points are in a constant value so that it is possible to represent the locus of potential source location. The Apollonius circle alone, however still keeps the ambiguity against the correct source location. Therefore another equation is necessary to estimate the unique locus of the source location. By estimating time differences of signal arrivals between source and sensors, the hyperbola equation is used to get the cross point of the two equations, where the point being assumed to be the source position. Simulations are performed to get performances of the proposed algorithm. Also, comparisons with real sea experiment data are made to prove applicability of the algorithm in real environment. The results show that the proposed algorithm successfully estimates the source position within an error bound of 10%.

In multi-static sonar for detecting an underwater target, received signals contain the target echo, reverberation and clutter. Clutter and reverberation are main causes of increasing the false alarm rate. MRAL classifies received signals according to the spatial similarity, and it regards classified signal as reflected signals from a reflector. MRAL reduces the false alarm rate this way. However, the results of MRAL can have localization errors. In this paper, an MRAL post processing algorithm is proposed to reduce the localization errors with the least square (LS) method.

The sound signal radiated from an underwater source is received by the hydrophone of the system, including multi-path time-delay and multi-path signal by sea surface and bottom reflection. The system using a time-delay between received signals for the source localization shows performance degradation due to incoherence by the multi-path propagation environment and the disturbance of a marine environment. Various types of array and signal processing have been used for robust source range and bearing estimation in this environment. In this paper, we use a line array composed of doublet array and an estimated time-delay correction method for robust localization performance in a multi-path propagation environment. Three doublet arrays are located on the same line, and the time-delay between signals received on each doublet array is estimated in a two-step procedure. The estimated time-delay value is obtained by the cross-correlation function and corrected by the interaction formula between the center-frequency of received signal and the geometry of the array with respect to aperture. By this proposed procedure, the range and bearing of source from array were calculated. In order to confirm the validity of the proposed method and array, we simulated localization and estimation using the Monte-Carlo method.

An underwater platform operating a passive sonar needs to acquire the target position to perform its mission. In an environment where sea-floor reflections exist, the position of a target can be estimated using the difference in the arrival time between the signals received through multipaths. In this paper, a method of localization for passive sonar is introduced, based on the EKF (Extended Kalman Filter) using the multipath time difference of arrival in underwater environments. TMA (Target Motion Analysis) requires accumulated measurements for long periods and has limitations on own-ship movement, allowing it to be used only in certain situations. The proposed method uses an EKF, which takes measurements of the time differences of the signal arrival in multipath environments. The method allows for target localization without restrictions on own-ship movement or the need for an observation time. To analyze the performance of the proposed method, simulation according to the distance and depth of the target was performed repeatedly, and the localization error according to the distance and water depth were analyzed. In addition, the correlation with the estimated position error was assessed by analyzing the arrival time difference according to the water depth.

In this paper, we introduce a underwater ranging algorithm with Look-up Table (LUT) by modifying the existing method which is using the changes of angles of accoustic rays with SSP (Sound Speed Profile). We compare the horizontal distance errors and the calculation times. Our new algorithm exploits Time of Arriva l(ToA) - horizontal distance table based on SSP. This algorithm offers faster calculation speed than the previous one with the slight increase of the distance estimation error.
A hull-cleaning robot sticks to the surface of a vessel and moves for efficient cleaning. Precise path planning and tracking using the current position is crucial. Many robots rely on the INS algorithm, but errors accumulate. To fix this, GPS, sonar, and USBL are used, though with limitations. Selecting suitable sensors for the surface operation and accurate positioning algorithm are vital. In this study, we developed a robot position estimation algorithm using the structure of a ship. Problems that arise when expanding the 2D position estimation algorithm used in existing wall structures to 3D were evaluated and methods for solving them were proposed. In addition, we aimed to improve performance by deriving singularities that exist in the robot path and proposing an error correction algorithm based on the singularities.
