  • Due to reflect at surface of the water and limit bandwidth, it is difficult to design underwater acoustic communication systems with high-reliability and high transmission rate. Therefore the trends of underwater communication is transformed from single sensor to multiple sensor studies. However, underwater MIMO communication techniques have a high correlation value between multiple sensors on transmitters and receivers in underwater environments, it is difficult to expect space diversity gain on muli-path channels. Therefore, this paper proposed the MISO communications system with two transmit sensors and single receiver sensor, and analyzed its performance using the LDPC codes and channel compensation algorithm.

  • Acoustic signal, which is a main carrier of underwater communication, attenuates along the traveled path heavily depending on the frequency as well as inter-node distance. In addition, since it has a long propagation delay, the conventional medium access control (MAC) schemes requiring complex signaling procedures and accordingly heavy overhead messages would not be appropriate in underwater communications. In this paper, we propose a code division multiple access (CDMA) scheme as a solution for MAC of underwater communication and evaluate the performance. A hierarchical data-gathering tree topology is considered and a staggered wake-up pattern is employed for the purpose of energy saving. As a performance measure, the data rate at each level of hierarchical topology is derived.

  • Underwater acoustics, which is the study of the phenomena related to sound waves in water, has been applied mainly in research on the use of sound navigation and range (SONAR) systems for communication, target detection, investigation of marine resources and environments, and noise measurement and analysis. Underwater acoustics is mainly applied in the field of remote sensing, wherein information on a target object is acquired indirectly from acoustic data. Presently, machine learning, which has recently been applied successfully in a variety of research fields, is being utilized extensively in remote sensing to obtain and extract information. In the earlier parts of this work, we examined the research trends involving the machine learning techniques and theories that are mainly used in underwater acoustics, as well as their applications in active/passive SONAR systems (Yang et al., 2020a; Yang et al., 2020b; Yang et al., 2020c). As a follow-up, this paper reviews machine learning applications for the inversion of ocean parameters such as sound speed profiles and sediment geoacoustic parameters.

  • This paper proposes particle filter(PF) method using acoustic signal for localization of an underwater robot. The method uses time of arrival(TOA) or time difference of arrival(TDOA) of acoustic signals from beacons whose locations are known. An experiment in towing tank uses TOA information. Simulation uses TDOA information and it reveals dependency of the localization performance on the uncertainty of robot motion and senor data. Also, comparison of the PF method with the least squares method of spherical interpolation(SI) and spherical intersection(SX) is provided. Since PF uses TOA or TDOA which comes from measurement of external information as well as internal motion information, its estimation is more accurate and robust to the sensor and motion uncertainty than the least squares methods.

  • As the demand for underwater systems providing pollution monitoring, marine ecosystem observation, surveillance monitoring is increased, acoustic modem for short-range underwater communication is spotlighted as one of significant research topics. Typically, in shallow water, it is so hard to analyze acoustic wave which undergoes spreading, absorption, reflection and scattering through transmission that there are limited advanced results. Furthermore, in order for the modem to be loaded in a fixed node or a moving vehicle in shallow water, its size should be small enough. In this paper, we address underwater acoustic channel model and design and implement an efficient micro acoustic modem which is adequate for short-range underwater communication. The developed modem is verified in a lake by varying working range and data rate up to 500 meters and 2 kbps, respectively.

  • The Navy is in the process of developing a sonar-operation strategy to increase the effectiveness of underwater target seeking capability. HMS is the basic strategy to detect underwater targets. The advantages of HMS is that, it has a short preparation time to operate and can be always used regardless of sea conditions and weather. However, it is difficult to effectively detect underwater targets due to the interaction between marine environments and sonar-operations. During the research, the effectiveness of the HMS system's underwater target seeking capability was analyzed by integrating various search patterns and environment conditions into the simulation. In the simulation the ship target an evasive target within a set region. The simulation presented results for an effective searching methods of underwater targets. These research results can be used as foundation for advancing and improving the sonar operational tactics.

  • Underwater Wireless Communication System can be useful for research of quality of water, ocean resources exploration, analysis ocean environment and so on. However, there exist security threats including data loss, data forgery, and another variety of security threats, because of characteristics of water, various geographical factors, intended attack, etc. To solve these problem, in this paper, we propose a CCM-UW mode of operation modified form of CCM mode of operation, providing data confidentiality, integrity, origin authentication and anti-attack prevent, for the Underwater Wireless Communication System. By implementing CCM-UW in MACA protocol(Underwater Wireless Communication MAC Protocol) and measuring speed of communication, we confirm the applicability of the security and analyze the communication environment impact.

  • Images obtained from underwater are usually degraded due to the environmental conditions. Some of the typical degradation factors include turbidity and color degradation. These degradations can be attributed to the absorptive and scattering properties of underwater degradation in terms of optical parameters, such as modulation transfer function (MTF), optical transfer function (OTF),point spread function (PSF), and color constancy. In this paper, we use the CODE V optical simulation software to mimic underwater conditions and model the imaging platform, thereby studying various parameters, such as PSF and MTF, and we use the PSF to remove the underwater turbidity. Experimental results show increased performance with the algorithm, compared to other existing methods.

  • Imaging sonars such as side-scanning sonar or forward-looking sonar are becoming fundamental sensors in the underwater robotics field. However, using sonar images for underwater perception presents many challenges. Sonar images are usually low resolution with inherent speckled noise. To overcome the limited sensor information for underwater perception, we investigated preprocessing methods for sonar images and feature detection methods for a nonlinear scale space. In this paper, we focus on a comparative analysis of (1) preprocessing for sonar images and (2) the feature detection performance in relation to the scale space composition.

  • Fish schooling or group moving in cyber underwater is a part of beautiful and familiar ecosystem. It is not so easy to present the behavior of fish crowd naturally as a computer animation. Thanks to development of computer graphics in entertainment industry, the numbers of digital films and animations is increased and the scenes of numerous crowd are shown to us. Though there are many studies on the techniques to process the behavior of crowd effectively and the developments of crowd behavioral systems, there is not enough study on the development for an efficient crowd behavioral simulator. In this' paper, we smartly present the types offish behavior in cyber underwater and make up for the weak points of time and cost. We develop the fish schooling behavior simulator for the contents of cyber underwater, automating fish behavioral types realistically and efficiently.
