Active sonar has been commonly used to detect targets existing in the shallow water. When a signal is transmitted and returned back from a target, it has been distorted by various properties of acoustic channel such as multipath arrivals, scattering from rough sea surface and ocean bottom, and refraction by sound speed structure, which makes target detection difficult. It is therefore necessary to consider these channel properties in the target signal simulation in operational performance system of active sonar. In this paper, a monostatic active sonar system is considered, and the target echo, reverberation, and ambient noise are individually simulated as a function of time, and finally summed to simulate a total received signal. A 3-dimensional highlight model, which can reflect the target features including the shape, position, and azimuthal and elevation angles, has been applied to each multipath pair between source and target to simulate the target echo signal. The results are finally compared to those obtained by the algorithm in which only direct path is considered in target signal simulation.
In this study, Sangpyeontongbo excavated at Bigyeongdo, Seosan, were investigated to determine the components of the corrosion products that were formed while they were buried underwater in an anaerobic environment. The causes of corrosion product formation were also determined. Microstructure observation, element mapping, principle component analysis for each year, and the detection of corrosion products were carried out. Results indicate that the concretions of corrosion products on the surface are needle-, hexahedral-, and octahedral-shaped; Pb, Cu, and S were among the elements detected. The Cu-S layer was clearly verified using element mapping. An analysis of major elements for each layer showed that Cu, S, and Pb were present and that most Zn was eliminated. The corrosion products detected were $PbCO_3$ (concretion) and $Cu_{1.96}S$ (metal). Accordingly, the anaerobic corrosion properties of Sangpyeongtongbo are summarized as follows: dezincification, copper sulfide, and lead compound.

Passive sonars employ DEMON (Detection of Envelope Modulation on Noise) processing to extract propeller information from the radiated noise of underwater targets. Conventional DEMON processing improves SNR(Signal to Noise Ratio) characteristic by Welch method. The conventional Welch method overlaps several different time domain DEMON outputs to reduce the variance. However, the conventional methods have high computational complexity to get high SNR with correlated acoustic signals. In this paper, we propose new DEMON processing method that divides acoustic signal into several frequency bands before DEMON processing and averages each DEMON outputs. Therefore, the proposed method gathers independent acoustic signal faster than conventional method with low computational complexity. We prove the performance of the proposed method with mathematical analysis and computer simulations.
It is important to predict accurately reverberation level, which is a limiting factor in underwater target detection. Recently, the studies have been expanded from monostatic sonar to bistatic sonar in which source and receivers are separated. To simulate the bistatic reverberation level, the computation processes for propagation, scattering strength, and scattering cross section are different from those in monostatic case and more complex computation processes are required. Although there have been many researches for bistatic reverberation, few studies have assessed the bistatic scattering cross section which is a key factor in simulate reverberation level. In this paper, a new method to estimate the bistatic scattering cross section is suggested, which uses the area of intersection between two circles. Finally, the reverberation levels simulated with the scattering cross section estimated using the method suggested in this paper are compared with those estimated using the methods previously suggested and those measured from an acoustic measurements conducted in May 2013.
Typical hydrophones in line array sensors for early detection of covert underwater targets can measure only sound-pressure-magnitude with the limitation of being unable to identify the direction of an incoming wave. In this study, a thickness shear mode vibrator was proposed as the main component of an inertia type vector hydrophone to measure both magnitude and direction of acoustic signals from targets. The equation to analyze the output voltage of the vibrator to an external force was derived, and the validity of the equation was verified through finite element analysis of a PMN-PT single crystal vibrator. The analysis results from this study will be utilized in the future for the design of inertia type vector hydrophones made of thickness shear vibrators.
Since the detection probability is critically dependent on the target strength (TS) in active sonar and on the radiated noise level (RNL) in passive sonar, the acoustic materials for echo reduction (ER) and transmission loss (TL) are widely used for the stealth of underwater targets. In this paper, a measurement system based on the small water tank, for the frequency range of greater than 30 kHz, is developed and verified using reference targets. In order to design the water tank and the geometry of test samples, a program is developed to calculate the arrival time of interfering signals due to the reflection from water tank walls and also due to the diffraction from the edge of the test samples. Considering all the interfering signals, an optimal experimental configuration for water tank and test samples is designed and used throughout the experiment. Next, the signal processing algorithms to estimate ER and TL are developed based on the measured propagation loss reflecting the geometric spreading characteristics of the transducer. Finally, a set of reference targets such as aluminium plate and perfectly reflecting plate are used in a small water tank to verify the developed measurement system.

Recently, unmanned systems are largely utilized in various fields due to the persistency and the least operational risk and an unmanned surface vehicle(USV) is the one of the representative application in the naval field. To assign multiple roles to an USV, we developed a sonar system which consists of a forward detecting sonar for the long-range detection, a downward detecting sonar for the small target scan and identification, and a strut type body for mounting sonar systems. In this paper, we described the developed sonar system for USV and the sea test results for verifying system performance. The test results showed that the developed sonar system was able to detect the underwater target about several kilometers away and could recognize a small object at the downside of the sonar system. We expect that the developed sonar system will be easily applied to other unmanned platforms without serious consideration.
The acoustical scattering characteristics of a target are influenced by the material properties and structural characteristics of the target, which are critical information for acoustic detection and identification of underwater target. In particular, for thin elastic target, unique scattered signals are generated around the target by the Lamb wave. In this paper, the results of scattered signal measurement of aluminum spherical shell in the water tank using the stepped frequency sweep sine signal are presented. In particular, the scattering of the water-filled aluminum spherical shell is compared with that of the air-filled one both theoretically and experimentally. The difference of the scattered signals are analyzed using the pseudo Wigner-Ville distribution in terms of average frequency, frequency distribution, and energy of the scattered signal. The result shows that all observed parameters increased when the aluminum sphere was water-filled, and it is well matched to the theoretical expectation.

Sound can travel a long distance in the ocean; hence, acoustic instruments have been widely used for ocean observations in various fields such as bathymetric survey, object detection, underwater communication, and current measurements. Herein we introduce a pressure-recording inverted echo sounder (PIES) which is one of the most powerful instruments, moored at seafloor for ocean observation in physical oceanography. The PIES can measure various kinds of oceanic phenomena (currents, mesoscale eddies, internal waves, and sea surface height variabilities) and support acoustic telemetry and pop-up data shuttle (PDS) system for remote data acquisition. In this paper, we review uses of PIES and describe present and prospective system of PIES including remote data acquisition toward (quasi) real-time data recovery.

As a method to understand the ecological habits around the artificial reef, various reports such as fishing gear survey, diving, sound survey, underwater CCTV and camera, etc. are reported. Among them, the sound survey method is carried out by installing an acoustic system on the ship and can be investigated regardless of the marine environment such as time constraints and turbidity. Such method, however, takes a lot of manpower and time as the ship travels at a constant speed. Investigations around artificial reefs are being conducted in an artificial way, and a lot of time and labor are consumed as such. Maritime buoys have been operated for various purposes such as route signs, weather observation, marine environment monitoring and defense monitoring for navigation safety in the past, but studies on monitoring systems for ecological habits and distribution of fish using marine buoys are remarkably insufficient. Therefore, this study aims to develop a system that allows users to directly monitor fish group detector data by estimating the distribution of fish groups around artificial reefs and using wireless communication at sea. In order to confirm the suitability of the maritime buoy used in this study, it was operated to compare data using LTE-equipped buoys capable of wireless communication and a data logger-type system buoy. Data transmission of buoys capable of LTE communication was carried out in a 10-minute ON, 10-minute OFF method due to the limitation of the power supply capacity, and data of the data logger-type buoy received full data. We compared and analyzed the data received from the two fish detectors. It is expected that real-time monitoring of the wireless buoy detection device using LTE will be possible through future research.
