In this paper, it is shown that an input-output (I/O) feedback linearized controller can be designed rationally by utilizing the time-scale properties of heave and pitch for an underwater vehicle. It is assumed that the dynamics of the vehicle is restricted to the vertical plane. An output-feedback control is designed, which stabilizes steady cruising paths. It is shown that the vehicle dynamics with acceleration as output becomes minimum phase. The dynamics can be transformed into a reduced system through a kind of partial linearization and singular perturbation technique. The reduced system is not only minimum phase but also exactly I/O linearizable via feedback. The I/O dynamic characteristics of the heave and pitch modes can be made linear and decoupled. Furthermore it becomes independent of cruising condition such as vehicle velocity. This study may help for designing autopilot systems for underwater vehicles.
This paper presents an integrated underwater navigational algorithm for unmanned underwater vehicles, using additional two-range transducers. This paper proposes a measurement model, using two range measurements, to improve the performance of an IMU-DVL (inertial measurement unit - Doppler velocity log) navigation system for long-time operation of underwater vehicles, excluding DVL measurement. Extended Kalman filter was adopted to propagate the error covariance, to update the measurement errors, and to correct the state equation when the external measurements are available. Simulation was conducted with the 6-d.o.f nonlinear numerical model of an AUV in lawn-mowing survey mode, at current flaw, where the velocity information is unavailable. Simulations illustrate the effectiveness of the integrated navigation system, assisted by the additional range measurements without DVL sensing.
The Strap Down Inertial Measurement Unit(SDIMU) is recently used for the sensor package of the modern underwater vehicles such as torpedoes and unmanned underwater-vehicles. For using SDIMU, an initial alignment must be carried out before the fire or navigation stage. The general initial alignment methods require that a mother vehicle Is a stationary condition or the Inertial Navigation System(INS) of vehicle is received the specific of data navigation from the mother vehicle. But an underwater vehicle dropped from aircraft is hard to satisfy above both necessary conditions of the general initial alignment. So, we suggest a new strap down initial alignment method of an underwater vehicle dropped from aircraft without using any aided sensors. The highlight point of this method is that a period of initial alignment is not before the fire but during running stage to fix alignment error. And we verify it by analyzing various data of S/W simulations, Hardware In the Loop Simulation(HILS) tests and sea trials.
Intertidal zones, akin to tidal flats, are among the potential areas where underwater cultural heritage might be submerged. However, the shallow depths in these regions present challenges for conventional vessel-based survey methods. Moreover, during low tides, intertidal zones transform into tidal flats, limiting the efficiency of survey efforts due to restricted access and potential risks. As a result, proper underwater cultural heritage surveys encounter difficulties in these environments. In recent times, extensive research is underway to address these issues by investigating underwater cultural heritage surveys in intertidal zones, encompassing diverse fields, including equipment-based investigations. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to conduct intertidal cultural heritage surveys, employing aerial photography and 3D mapping to create detailed orthoimages and 3D models. The study focused on assessing the potential application of these techniques for cultural heritage surveying within intertidal zones. Notably, the survey conducted in Jindo's Naesan-ri demonstrated high-resolution capabilities, enabling the distinction of actual pottery fragments mixed within gravel fields. Similarly, in the survey of Jindo's Byeokpa-hang, it was found that a wooden pillar structure existed in a section about 200m long. The integration of various sensors, including LiDAR, with UAVs allows for diverse investigation possibilities, including bathymetric measurements, and is expected to facilitate the acquisition of varied datasets for further research and assessment.
Results of a numerical simulation of a flowing of the underwater vehicles hull with the pump-jet nozzle are presented. It was calculate velocity distributions and coefficients of the lift force and the longitudinal moment of the hull with the pump-jet nozzle and isolated hull for some values of angle of attack. It was shown that the area of tile influence of the nozzle on the velocities distribution of the hull and character of changing of coefficients of the lift force and the longitudinal moment and their derivatives depending on angle of attack.
This paper deals with the global path planning problem for AUVs (autonomous underwater vehicles) in a tidal current field. The previous researches in the field were unsuccessful at simultaneously addressing the two issues of obstacle avoidance and tidal current-based optimization. The use of a genetic algorithm is proposed in this paper to move past this limitation and solve both issues at once. Simulation results showed that the genetic algorithm could be applied to generate an optimal path in the field of a tidal current with multiple obstacles.
This paper presents an improved guidance algorithm for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) in 3D space for generating smoother vehicle turn during the course change at the way-points. The way-point guidance by the line-of-sight (LOS) method has been modified for correcting the reference angles to achieve minimal calculation and smoother transition at the way-points. The algorithm has two phases in which the first phase brings the vehicle to converge to a distance threshold point on the line segment connecting the first two way-points and the next phase generates an angular path with smoother transition at the way-points. Then the desired angles are calculated from the reference and correction angles. The path points are regularly parameterized in the spherical coordinates and mapped to the Cartesian coordinates. The proposed algorithm is found to be simple and can be used for real time implementation. The details of the algorithm and simulation results are presented.
The problem of motion control for AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) is addressed. The utilization of such robotic vehicles has gained an increasing importance in many marine activities. In this paper the objective is to describe how to design and apply FGS (Fuzzy Gain Scheduling) PD (Proportional Derivative) controller for an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) to control the yaw and depth of the vehicle by keeping the path of the navigation to a desired point, and/or changing the path according to a set point.

In this paper, we propose a formation control algorithm for underactuated autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) with parametric uncertainties using the approach angle. The approach angle is used to solve the underactuated problem for AUVs, and the leader-follower strategy is used for the formation control. The proposed controller considers the nonzero off-diagonal terms of the mass matrix of the AUV model and the associated parametric uncertainties. Using the state transformation, the mass matrix, which has nonzero off-diagonal terms, is transformed into a diagonal matrix to simplify designing the control. To deal with the parametric uncertainties of the AUV model, a self-recurrent wavelet neural network is used. The proposed formation controller is designed based on the dynamic surface control technique. Some simulation results are presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed control method.
The ostraciiform swimming mode allows the simplest mechanical design and control for underwater vehicle swimming. Propulsion is achieved via the flapping of caudal fin without the body undulatory motion. In this research, the propulsion of underwater vehicles by ostraciiform swimming mode is explored experimentally using an ostraciiform fish robot and some rigid caudal fins. The effects of caudal fin flapping frequency and amplitude on the cruising performance are studied in particular. A theoretical model of propulsion using rigid caudal fin is proposed and identified with the experimental data. An experimental method to obtain the drag coefficient and the added mass of the fish robot is also proposed.
