  • This paper proposes a new efficient MAC(Media Access Control) protocol to establish the ultrasonic communication network for underwater vehicles, which ensures a certain level of maximum throughput regardless of the propagation delay of ultrasonic and allows fast data transmission through the multiple ultrasonic communication channel. A MAC protocol for underwater communication network that allows 'peer-to-peer' communication between a surface ship and multiple underwater systems is designed, and the proposed control protocol is implemented for its verification.

  • The intent is to determine whether or not the custody transfer is helpful for data transmission in challenging underwater communications when running Bundle protocol or underwater protocols. From the point of view defending side, Underwater Acoustic Network (UAN) will be a serious threat for its strong functionality long rang and high precision of surveillance and detection. Therefore, countermeasures must be taken to weaken its effect. Our purpose is analyzed that how to benefit from the UIoT to learn from, exploit and preserve the natural underwater resources. Delay/Disruption Tolerant Network (DTN) is essential part of the network heterogeneity communication network. The vulnerability and potential security factors of UIoT are studied thereafter. Security mechanisms for an underwater environment are difficult to apply owing to the limited bandwidth. Therefore, for underwater security, appropriate security mechanisms and security requirements must be defined simultaneously. The paper consists of mathematical and security model. Most important point of view in the security challenges of effective Buffer and Storage management in DTN.

  • As underwater environment monitoring system's interest has increased, the research is proceeding about underwater acoustic sensor network. Underwater sensor network can be applicable to many fields, such as underwater environment monitoring, underwater resource exploration, oceanic data collection, military purposes, etc. It is essential to define the PHY-MAC protocol for revitalization of the underwater acoustic sensor network which is available utilization in a variety of fields. However, underwater acoustic sensor network has to implement by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics, such as limited bandwidth, multi-path, fading, long propagation delay caused by low acoustic speed. In this paper, we define frequency of adjusted PHY protocol, network topology, MAC protocol, PHY-MAC interface, data frame format by consideration of underwater environmental characteristics. We also present system configuration of our implementation and evaluate performance based on our implementation with test in real underwater field.

  • Underwater images often suffer from color distortion, blurring and low contrast, which is caused by the propagation of light in the underwater environment being affected by the two processes: absorption and scattering. To cope with the poor quality of underwater images, this paper proposes a multiscale fusion underwater image enhancement method based on channel attention mechanism and local binary pattern (LBP). The network consists of three modules: feature aggregation, image reconstruction and LBP enhancement. The feature aggregation module aggregates feature information at different scales of the image, and the image reconstruction module restores the output features to high-quality underwater images. The network also introduces channel attention mechanism to make the network pay more attention to the channels containing important information. The detail information is protected by real-time superposition with feature information. Experimental results demonstrate that the method in this paper produces results with correct colors and complete details, and outperforms existing methods in quantitative metrics.

  • Due to the difference between the underwater communication environment and the terrestrial communication environment, the radio communication mainly used on the ground cannot be used in underwater. For this reason, in the underwater communication environment, various communication media such as acoustic waves, infrared rays, light and so on has been studied, but there exist several difficulties in operating them individually due to their physical limitations. The concept for overcoming these difficulties is the very underwater multi-media communication, a method to select a communication medium best suitable for the current underwater environment among underwater communication multimedia whenever there occurs underwater communication failure. In this paper, we present an underwater multi-media communication network based on star topology and a fragmentation and reassembly technique to solve the problems caused by the different MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) sizes among different underwater communication media. We also present the estimations and analysis on processing times in each of fragmentation and reassembly and the total data amount for transmitting fragments in our proposed underwater multi-media communication network.

  • The terrestrial communication network and the underwater acoustic communication network have very different communication characteristics each other in operational environments, communication media, propagation delay, frequency bandwidth, transmission speed, bit error rate, and so on. These different characteristics cause some different address schemes and different maximum transmission units and, as a result, these differences must form certainly obstacles to the intercommunication between a terrestrial communication network and an underwater acoustic communication network. In this paper, we presents a method to use the virtual addresses to resolve the interconnection problem caused by different address schemes between a terrestrial communication network and an underwater acoustic communication network, and, through a mathematical modeling, we analyze the performance on the message transceiving delay time in the underwater environment.

  • A gateway buoy system connects a underwater network to a terrestrial network, which enables to efficiently monitor the underwater network on a land station. In this paper, we introduce an implemented gateway buoy system which relays gathered data from multiple underwater nodes to a land station in a real time. The gateway buoy hardware system is composed of a underwater acoustic modem system, a radio frequency modem system, and a gateway operating system. in additional, we have implemented a land operating program and a land monitoring program for gateway system and states of underwater network, respectively. We also perform real-sea experiments to verify the performance of the gateway buoy system which real-time monitors underwater network states and gateway system states.

  • Compared to terrestrial RF communications, underwater acoustic communications have several limitations such as limited bandwidth, high level of fading effects, and a large underwater propagation delay. In this paper, in order to tackle those limitations of underwater communications and to make it possible to form a large underwater monitoring systems, we propose a hierarchical underwater network architecture, which consists of underwater sensors, clusterheads, underwater/surface sink nodes, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). In the proposed architecture, for the maximization of packet delivery ratio and the minimization of underwater sensor's energy consumption, a hybrid routing protocol is used. More specifically, cluster members use Tree based routing to transmit sensing data to clusterheads. AUVs on optimal trajectory movements collect the aggregated data from clusterhead and finally forward the data to the sink node. Also, in order to minimize the maximum travel distance of AUVs, an Integer Linear Programming based algorithm is employed. Performance analysis through simulations shows that the proposed architecture can achieve a higher data delivery ratio and lower energy consumption than existing routing schemes such as gradient based routing and geographical forwarding. • Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is researched in various filed. Underwater Sensor Network (UWSN) is used various purpose such as underwater environment monitoring. But, WSN is researched in the terrestrial that uses mainly radio frequency, The existing terrestrial research is incongruent to apply to underwater. Therefore, we propose UWSN architecture that considers underwater environment. In this paper, UWSN applied cluster technique and functional node constructs. Each cluster collects and sends cluster data. Dual super cluster head receives cluster data and transmits each in the base-station. We implement WSN routing algorithm, and construct test-bed and analyze cluster data receive rate.
