Recently, as tunnel structure is getting old, many deformations and defects have been occurred. As tunnel has the characteristics of underground structure, the estimation of the cause of deformation is very difficult. Then, it is necessary to investigate the state of tunnel lining and to estimate the deformation cause and safety for tunnel. In this study, inspection and diagnosis system for effective maintenance in tunnel was researched. Firstly, non-destructive techniques such as GPR (ground penetrating radar), impact echo test, and infrared thermal techniques were applied to tunnel lining inspection. Tunnel lining analysis system was developed to analyze the stability of tunnel. And, tunnel soundness evaluation system was developed to find the probable causes and indicate the method for repair and reinforcement for tunnel.

The west express way is notorious for extremely heavy traffic area in the west of Seoul, South Korea. Hence, the city government recently initiated a new underground BTO (Build-Transfer-Operate) road project to solve traffic congestion and a high construction cost. The proposed underground express road being designed is the first double-level tunnel ever designed in South Korea and using Conventional tunnelling method (NATM). A total length of tunnel for light vehicles is 10.91km long including both open cut structures and concrete lining with middle-deck in bored tunnel. There are also 4 ventilation shafts for ventilation and evacuation on emergency. Many design issues had been aroused during the preliminary design phase and detail design phase is currently going on. This paper discusses design focuses including excavation methods, ground water issues, a deck slab installation, and a construction cost etc. for the double level road tunnel design of urban area.

The experiment was performed to analyze the intersectional ventilation efficiency by intersection structure and Jet Fan in network-form road tunnel. For this, the size of real road tunnel was reduced by 1/45. To apply traffic inertia force when driving, blower fan was used to form an airflow in model tunnel and the intersectional efficiency was also investigated by measuring the speed at local point of the tunnel. To improve the reduction of ventilation caused by the structure character, Jet Fan was installed to optimize ventilation efficiency in tunnel.

An underground research tunnel is essential to validate the integrity of a high-level waste disposal system, and the safety of geological disposal. In this study, KAERI underground research tunnel(KURT) was constructed in the site of Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI). The results of the site investigation and the design of underground tunnel were presented. The procedure for the construction permits and the construction of KURT were described briefly. The in-situ experiments being carried out at KURT were also introduced.
In this study, physical, mechanical, and thermal properties of rock samples were investigated to estimate the Excavation Damaged Zone (EDZ) developed during the construction of the KAERI Underground Research Tunnel. The average porosity in the EDZ was increased by about 140%. The average wave velocity, Young's modulus, and uniaxial compressive strength in the EDZ were decreased by about 11, 37, and 16%, respectively. And the thermal conductivity in the EDZ was decreased by about 20%. From the laboratory tests, the EDZ size could be estimated to be around 1.1-2.4 m.
This work presents a safety assessment of an underground tunnel subjected to a ballistic missile attack employing the numerical approach. For the impact simulation, a box shaped reinforced concrete (RC) structure with a cross section dimension of 8.0×10.0 m under a soil layer that was attacked by a SCUD missile was modeled using finite element (FE) software LS-DYNA. SCUD missile is one of a series of tactical ballistic missiles developed by Soviet Union during the Cold War, which is adopted for a short-range ballistic missile. The developed FE simulation for the penetration depth of the missile impacting into the soil structure was verified from the well-known formula of the penetration prediction. The soil-structure interaction, the soil type, and the impact missile velocity effects on the penetration depth of the missile into the different soil types were investigated. The safety assessment of the underground tunnel was performed with regard to the different depths of the underground tunnel. For each missile velocity and soil type, a specific depth called the unsafe depth was obtained from the analysis results. The structure beneath the soil beyond this depth remains safe. The unsafe depth was found to be increased with the increasing missile velocity.
Underground structures show different behaviors depending upon the space and the mechanical characteristics of discontinuities, such as joints, beddings, faults and shear zone. Desingning the rock structeres without considering the significance of these discontinuities can lead to false conclusions. This paper includes study on the following topics; the numerical analysis of continuous rock and discontinuous rock around a tunnel, the influences on shotcrete moment and rock-bolt axial force of tunnel due to different joint orientation and stiffness.
Electromagnetic measurements of the power cable tunnel were conducted from August 10 to 20, 2018, in the ${\bigcirc}{\bigcirc}$ city underground utility tunnel. During this period, the average temperature was $31.89^{\circ}C$ and the humidity was 67.56% in power cable tunnel. As a result of the electromagnetic measurement, the highest electric field was 25.3 V/m and the magnetic flux density was $42.6{\mu}T$. The average electric field was 18.56 V/m and the magnetic flux density was $29.32{\mu}T$ in the power cable tunnel. As a result of comparison with the electric equipment technical standard, the electric field in the power cable tunnel was 0.5% of the electric equipment standard and 35.2% of the magnetic flux density. It's similar value that electric field is about robotic vacuum(15.53 V/m), and magnetic flux density is similar value about capsule- type coffee machine ($23.07{\mu}T$). The number of cable lines and the size of the electromagnetic waves were not proportional to each other through comparison of cable lines in the power cable tunnel. It was confirmed that 154 kV, rather than 22.9 kV, could have a greater influence on occupational.

Underground structures such as subsea tunnel having large section should be stable against seismic loads. In general, underground structures show more stable behavior due to the limited dynamic motion and force, and considerable energy dissipation; however, severe damage was reported from recent earthquakes. Therefore, more sophisticated and analytic approach is required to investigate the seismic response of underground structure like subsea tunnel. In this study, seismic analysis of virtual Honam-Jeju subsea tunnel are performed. Consequently, stresses and forces of tunnel lining increased at fractured and/or weak rock zones. Stresses and forces of tunnel lining also increased at large section under axially deformed condition; however, decrease under transversely deformed condition.
This paper investigates the mechanisms of tunnel spalling and massive tunnel failures using fracture mechanics principles. The study starts with examining the fracture propagation due to tensile and shear failure mechanisms. It was found that, fundamentally, in rock masses with high compressive stresses, tensile fracture propagation is often a stable process which leads to a gradual failure. Shear fracture propagation tends to be an unstable process. Several real case observations of spalling failures and massive shear failures in boreholes, tunnels and underground roadways are shown in the paper. A number of numerical models were used to investigate the fracture mechanisms and extents in the roof/wall of a deep tunnel and in an underground coal mine roadway. The modelling was done using a unique fracture mechanics code FRACOD which simulates explicitly the fracture initiation and propagation process. The study has demonstrated that both tensile and shear fracturing may occur in the vicinity of an underground opening. Shallow spalling in the tunnel wall is believed to be caused by tensile fracturing from extensional strain although no tensile stress exists there. Massive large scale failure however is most likely to be caused by shear fracturing under high compressive stresses. The observation that tunnel spalling often starts when the hoop stress reaches $0.4^*UCS$ has been explained in this paper by using the extension strain criterion. At this uniaxial compressive stress level, the lateral extensional strain is equivalent to the critical strain under uniaxial tension. Scale effect on UCS commonly believed by many is unlikely the dominant factor in this phenomenon.
