  • This study proposes a new concept of a tunnel central drainage system by using a drain board to make a breakthrough on difficulties in the installation of conventional drainage system and draw-down of its drain capacity especially in long tunnels. A fundamental study has been performed for evaluation of the drain capacity of the planar drainage system adopted in this study. In fact, the system proposed makes possible to omit the side, transverse as well as central drainage pipes required in the conventional system, even if its drain capacity and any guideline for design are not available to date. In this circumstance, it is carried out to investigate the correlation between drain capacities and, shapes and posit ions of the columns of the drain board in terms of a variety of water inflows through hydrological model tests. It is shown from the tests that a drain capacity is highly influenced by the shape and the distance between the columns of a drain board in flowing direction, and a round rectangular shape of the columns leads to the highest capacity of drainage. And also, the shorter distance between the columns in flowing direction, the higher drain capacity would be achieved.

  • With the wide spread of direct current(DC) electric railroads in Korea, the stray current or leakage currents from negative return rails become a pending problem to the safety of nearby underground Infrastructures. The most widely used mitigation method for this interference is the stray current drainage method, which connects the underground metallic structures to the rails with diodes (polarized drainage) or thyristor (forced drainage). This method, however, inherently possesses some drawbacks such as an increase of total leakage torrents from rails, expansion of interference zone, etc. In order to resolve these drawbacks, we developed a rapid potential-controled rectifier and applied to a depot area where stray current inference is very severe. The effect of this method was analyzed from the field tell data and we suggest this method can be an excellent alternative to the drainage-bond-based mitigation methods.

  • The owner of underground metallic structures (gas pipeline, oil pipeline, water pipeline, etc) has a burden of responsibility for the corrosion protection in order to prevent big accidents like gas explosion, soil pollution, leakage and so on. So far, Cathodic Protection(CP) technology have been implemented for protection of underground systems. The stray current from DC subway system in Korea has affected the cathodic protection (CP) system of the buried pipelines adjacent to the railroads. In this aspect, KERI has developed a various mitigation method, drainage system through steel bar under the rail, a stray current gathering mesh system, insulation method between yard and main line, distributed ICCP(Impressed Current Cathodic System), High speed response rectifier, restrictive drainage system, Boding ICCP system. In this paper, the mechanism of mitigation method of DC stray current for underground metallic structures is described.

  • In recent, the utilization of underground in urban area is increased as subway, store, and others but we have done a few studies for the inundation of underground due to flooding. So, we investigate the examples of underground inundation and the causes of inundation for flood events. And the relationship between flood characteristics and underground inundation is analyzed through the frequency of rainfall which is made by annual multi maximum series. As a result, most of underground is inundated by high frequency of rainfall. And there are some cases that the underground is inundated by low frequency of rainfall because of poor drainage system and characteristics of location.

  • As interest in the use of underground spaces increases, safety against water pressure acting on underground structures is required. In Korea, various buoyancy prevention methods are used to control such underground water pressure, and among them, the vertical drainage method with excellent economic efficiency, constructionability and stability has recently been introduced and applied. However, in the case of the vertical drainage method designed and constructed in the field, it is often designed and constructed depending on numerical analysis, making it difficult to expect practical stability judgment. Accordingly, in this study, an experiment was conducted to measure both pressure by installing a vertical drainage system using a model soil. Based on the measured value by the experiment and the numerical analysis value, we intend to compare and analyze the action positive pressure and use it as basic data for field application.

  • In tunnels, safety factor concept has been suggested to estimate their stability quantitatively. It is merely limited in the framework of mechanical analysis. However safety factor concept has not been applied in hydro-mechanical coupled analyses due to their modelling complexity. Recently studies on this topic are being actively made. In this study, induced drainage modelling methods for hydro-mechanical coupled analyses are compared and analyzed to estimate safety factor of a subsea tunnel exactly. To this end, methods both controlling hydraulic characteristic of shotcrete and using a drainage well are considered. Sensitivity analysis were carried out on rock class, thickness of shotcrete, and hydraulic properties of rock mass. As the results of this study, it turned out that the induced drainage modelling using a drainage well would give more reliable results than that of controlling hydraulic characteristic of shotcrete in estimating tunnel stability in hydro-mechanical coupled analyses.

  • A general rainfall outflow in urban drainage has early time of concentration because urban drainage areas are most paved area. In general, rainfall outflow is flowed in drainage pump station and is discharged to rivers in urban areas. However it is excluded through drainage pumps about a heavy rainfall which exceed the design rainfall and the rainfall outflows increase the urban inundation risk. A current pump operation is control according to water level of collecting well or reservoir in drain pump station. But recently, the localized downpours are happened frequently in urban drainage and the current pump stations are frequently incapable of the heavy rainfall outflows. In this study, a real urban inundation was simulated and the drain capacity of drain pump station was evaluated by analysis about flood-factor in urban underground passage. Then the analysis about the inundation was done by the simulation about the real rainfall which cause the inundation. Also, in the simulation the inundation risk and the evaluation of flood-factor were analyzed according to change of the pump operation rule.

  • The objective of this study is to develop the existing drainage system for catching the partial leakage of tunnel structures operating in cold region. The drainage system consists of drainage board, Hotty-gel as a waterproofing material, cover for preventing protrusion of Hotty-gel, air nailer, fixed nail, pipe for collecting ground leak, pipe for conveying ground leak, wire-mesh, and sprayed cement mortar. The drainage systems were installed in conventional concrete lining tunnels to evaluate the site applicability and constructability. The performances of waterproof and the drainage in the drainage system were evaluated by injecting 1,000 ml of red water in the back of the drainage system at 7 days, 14 days, 21 days, 28 days, 2 months, 3 months, 4 months, 5 months, 6 months, 7 months and 8 months. During 8 months of field test, the average daily temperature of the tunnel site was measured from $-16.0^{\circ}C$ to $25.6^{\circ}C$. The daily minimum temperature was $-21.3^{\circ}C$ and the daily maximum temperature was $30.8^{\circ}C$. There was no problem in waterproof and drainage performance of the drainage board in the drainage system. However, the pipe for conveying ground leak had the leakage problem from 14 days. It is considered that the leakage of the pipe for conveying ground leak was caused by the deformation of the pipe of the flexible plastic material having a thickness of 0.2 cm by using the high pressure air nailer and the fixing pin and the insufficient thickness and width of the hotty-gel for preventing the leakage.

  • Tunnel in subway should be designed as a water-proof type tunnel as much as possible but it is difficult to make it come true due to several facts, such as construction technique and cost. A drainage type tunnel as a substitute of a water-proof tunnel lead to the increase of water pressure on the concrete lining that make bad effect to tunnel structure when it has some problem to operate the drainage system. Throughout studying about cases on defects of tunnel drainage in subway We hope it contributes to tunnel maintenance.
