  • In traditional method, the establishment of database for current data of underground utilities would frequently occur a lot of losses in the time, economic effect and problems of accuracy because the procedure for the generations of transverse and vertical section mapping would be composed of many steps and the establishment of underground utility is inefficiently accomplished. The goals of this study are 1) to obtain digital information and data aquisition simultaneously by realtime in the field, 2) to develop the computer program of generation of transverse and vertical section mapping based on the plan for data transformation. As a result of this study, the establishment of database for underground utilities is able to save the time and improve economic effect and accuracy while minimizing errors in rewriting and acquiring data.

  • Lots of various utilities are buried under the surface of the earth. The effective handling of the underground utilities is becoming the big subject and project for the harmonious management and administration of the city. To detect the position and depth of buried underground utilities, GPR and Induced EM surveys are commonly used. However, they have limitations, such as shallow skin-depth and non-availability in the areas where subsurface materials are not homogeneous and are compose of clays and/or salts and gravels. The aim of this study is to find the efficient geophysical method which can overcome these limitations. For this purpose, various geophysical mehods were applied in the site of poor geotechnical environment.

  • In recent decades, underground usage in urban areas has expanded from subways and utilities to include virtually every non-residential building function. Greater usage of underground space is envisioned in the more congested urban areas in the world such as Asia and Europe. This increasing interest in underground development is raising basic questions about whether people can work and live underground, and if so, what design techniques can sucessfully be employed. The actual experience of people in underground space, as well as general associations and image of the underground reveal predominantly negative attitudes. A number of design techniques have been suggested by researchers, or actually utilized by designers, to alleviate these potential problems for people in underground space. This paper identifies these psychological and physiological problems. In addition, design objective and possible solutions are briefly summarized. This is followed by a summary of special design problems and objectives related to road tunnels.

  • As digital twin technology is applied to various industrial fields, technologies to effectively process large amounts of data are required. In this paper, we discuss a customized service method for fast search and effective delivery of large-scale data for underground facility for public utilities management. The proposed schemes are divided into two ways: a fast search data generation method and a customized information service segmentation method to efficiently search and abbreviate vast amounts of data. In the high-speed search data generation, we discuss the configuration of the synchronization process for the time series analysis of the sensors collected in the underground facility and the additional information method according to the data reduction. In the user-customized service method, we define the types of users in normal and disaster situations, and discuss how to service them accordingly. Through this study, it is expected to be able to develop a systematic data generation and service model for the management of underground utilities that can effectively search and receive large-scale data in a disaster situation.

  • 24-hour monitoring is required to maintain the city's lifeline function in the underground facility for public utilities. And it is necessary to develop technology to exchange the shortage of human resources. It is difficult to reflect the specificity of underground space management in general management methods. This study proposes underground facility for public utilities digital twin system requirements. The concept of space is divided into physical space and virtual space, and the physical space constitutes the type and layout of the sensor that is the basis for the construction of the multimodal image sensor system, and the virtual space constitutes the system architecture. It also suggested system functions according to the task. It will be effective in preventing disasters and maintaining the lifeline function of the city through the digital twins.

  • In order to transform the underground utility data into the 3-D spatial objects, this thesis defined the type of the 3-D spatial objects and the storage structure of objects, and developed the spatial data transformation system that transforms the 2-D underground utility data into the pre-defined 3-D spatial objects through the Booch Method, an object-oriented development method. For this sake, the relational data model of ARC/INFO and the storage structure are analyzed, as well as the pre-requisites, required for the 3-D visualization of the underground utilities. Also, the 2-D underground utility data, saved in ARC/INFO, were transformed into the ASCII files through the internal pre-processing procedure, then used as the input data of the transformation system. In addition, to develop the transformation system, the object-oriented development methods are studied first and, then, applied to the system analysis and the design procedure with the Booch Method as a development method. Finally, the results of analysis and design procesure are implemented through AML, a ARC/INFO macro language, and C++, an object-oriented programing language. As a result of this study, the 3-D spatial objects that can visualize the 2-D utilities in 3-D, are acquired, and the adaptation of object-oriented development method to the system development procedure enabled an effective development prodedure.

  • Several studies have been conducted to analyze the risk of ground subsidence occurring in urban areas. Recently, the correlation between the density of underground utilities (i.e., the quantity of buried utilities in the analysis area) and the recorded ground subsidence has been explored to analyze such risk through. Choi et al. (2021) proposed an algorithm to optimize the correlation between the ground subsidence and normalized linear density of underground pipelines. In this study, the optimization algorithm was modified for analysis based on the risk grade. The analysis results using the modified optimization algorithm were compared with the correlation analysis results between the density of underground utilities and recorded ground subsidence presented by Choi et al. (2021). Compared with Choi et al. (2021), three analysis results showed equal or higher accuracy in the correlation analysis with recorded ground subsidence according to risk grade. In particular, for R100, it was divided into five grades and compared with the ratio of the recorded ground subsidence that occurred in grades 4 or higher. As a result, Choi et al. (2021) showed that 86% of recorded ground subsidence occurred in grades 4 or higher, whereas this study showed 93%. It was confirmed that the accuracy of the modified optimization algorithm was improved. The modified optimization algorithm can be applied to develop a ground subsidence risk map for each grade in an urban area, which can be used as basic data for decision-making for underground utility maintenance.

  • The uncertain existence and insufficient information of underground structures, such as pipe lines and cable tunnels, is causing many problems related to route plan, design, construction of new underground structures. The theoretical equations that is able to predict the location, size, and direction of underground structures through electric field analysis are suggested at the previous study (Ryu., 2015). Three field tests were performed for predicting the location, size, and direction of underground structures and the existence and size of sink-hole. Prediction results were reflected at the design and follow-up measures were performed.

  • This study is to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of flowable backfill and offer a guide line of mixture proportion based on soil types for constructing underground power utilities. Flowable backfill is known as soil-cement slurry, void fill, and controlled low-strength material(CLSM). The benefits of CLSM are reduced equipment costs, faster construction, re-excavation in the future, and the ability to place materials in confined spaces, which are narrow parts or perimeters of underground power cables nearly impossible for compaction. The flowable slurry mixed with 17 soils and 6 accelerated mixtures in the laboratory were evaluated for flowability and unconfined compressive strength to meet the target values of this study.

  • Both simulation and physical implementation are valuable tasks in sensor network routing protocols. In this paper, we propose an efficient underground utilities monitoring method within several constraints using wireless sensor network. First, in order to physically implement protocol of network which is applied, the distributed event-based simulation, which applies an existing nesC codes of sensor network routing protocols, is implemented and analyzed. Also, we have performed the simulation and analyzed the execution results for application model of routing protocols for monitoring underground utilities in the VIPTOS(Visual Ptolemy and TinyOS) environments which combine TOSSIM and Ptolemy II based on distributed event.
