  • This study was conducted to estimate the optimum temperature and required time for soil sterilization when heated water was circulated through underground heating pipes in the greenhouse which solar heat was influenced to the temperature of soil during the summer day. Two different types of heating pipes were used for the experiment. One was a polyethylene pipe(XL) and the other was a corrugated ring shaped stainless steel pipe(STS). The results of the studies were summarized as follows; By measuring the thermal characteristics of the XL and STS, it was examined that the average temperature differences of the inlet and outlet were $8.5^{\circ}C$ and $13.3^{\circ}C$, the average flowrates were 15.3 L/min and 5.6 L/min, and the average radiation powers were 9.1 kW and 4.1 kW, respectively. As results of the regression analysis of underground temperatures, when average soil temperature was$35^{\circ}C$, an average water temperature was $80^{\circ}C$, and XL was used, it was estimated that the possible heat transfer distance, the required time for heat transfer and heat flux to reach the underground temperature of $60^{\circ}C$ were 300 mm, 230 hours, and $7.57kW/m^2$, respectively.

  • Recently, in urban areas, cavities and ground collapse adjacent to underground structures are frequently reported. Several studies on the cavity generation by structure cracks have been made, however they are focused on the cause of cracks and settlement of the ground. In this paper, soil particle and groundwater discharge through pipe cracks and cavity generation mechanism are investigated. The theoretical analysis of the groundwater, which is the main factor of the drainage of the soil particles, and the particle transport mechanism and flow characteristics were investigated. An experimental model test was carried out to identify the mechanism of cavity generation by underground buried pipe cracks. The soil particle weight of discharge through the cracks, and the movement characteristics of the particles were analyzed using PIV. In this study, it is clearly identified that soil particle movements, cavity generation and ground collapse that occur in the ground are basically caused by the movement of groundwater.

  • Pipe jacking is a name for a method to excavate a tunnel by pushing pipe into the ground from an especial pit. Size of tunnels in this method is different from under 900mm (microtunneling) to more than 3,000mm. Method of excavation is also different from hand digging to use of any kind of tunnel boring machines such as slurry and earth pressure balance (EPB) machines. Slurry pipe jacking was firmly established as a special method for the nondisruptive construction of the underground tunnels in urban area. During the pipe jacking and microtunneling process, the jacking load is an important parameter, controlling the pipe wall thickness, need to and location of intermediate jacking station, selection of jacking frame and lubrication requirements. The main component of the jacking load is due to frictional resistance. In this paper the skin friction between pipe surface and surrounding condition also lubricant quality based on a few fundamental tests, were considered. During this study unconfined compressive strength test, dynamic friction measurement test and direct shear box test were raised for one of the largest diameter slurry pipe jacking project in Fujisawa city in Japan. It could be concluded that in slurry pipe jacking, prediction of frictional forces are mainly dependent on successful lubrication, its quality and lubricant strength parameters. Conclusions from this study can be used for the same experiences.

  • Water distribution pipes installed underground have potential risks of pipe failure and burst. After years of use, pipe walls tend to be corroded due to aggressive soil environments where they are located. The present study aims to assess the degree of external corrosion of a distribution pipe network. In situ data obtained through test pit excavation and direct sampling are carefully collated and assessed. A statistical approach is useful to predict severity of pipe corrosion at present and in future. First, criteria functions defined by discriminant function analysis are formulated to judge whether the pipes are seriously corroded. Data utilized in the analyses are those related to soil property, i.e., soil resistivity, pH, water content, and chloride ion. Secondly, corrosion factors that significantly affect pipe wall pitting (vertical) and spread (horizontal) on the pipe surface are identified with a view to quantifying a degree of the pipe corrosion. Finally, a most reliable model represented in the form of a multiple regression equation is developed for this purpose. From these analyses, it can be concluded that our proposed model is effective to predict the severity and rate of pipe corrosion utilizing selected factors that reflect the fuzzy soil environment.

  • The expansion behavior of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt shows geometric nonlinearity due to its ${\Omega}-shaped$ section. Previous studies on the anchoring behavior of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt were mainly performed using theoretical method. However, those studies oversimplified the actual behavior by assuming isotropic expansion of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt. In this study, the anchoring behavior of the inflatable steel pipe rockbolt were investigated by the numerical method considering the irregularity of pipe expansion and other influencing factors. The expansion of inflatable steel pipe rockbolt, the contact stress distribution and the change of the average contact stress and the contact area during installation were analyzed. The contact stresses were developed differently depending on the constitutive behavior of rocks. Small contact stresses occurred in steel pipes installed in elasto-plastic rock compared to steel pipes installed in elastic rock. Also, the anchoring behaviors of the inflatable steel pipe rockbolt were different according to the stiffness of the rock. The steel pipe was completely unfolded in the case of the stiffness smaller than 0.5 GPa, but it was not fully unfolded in the case of the stiffness larger than 0.5 GPa for the given analysis condition. When the steel pipe is completely unfolded, the contact stress increases as the rock stiffness increases. However, the contact stress decreases as the rock stiffness increases when the steel pipe is not fully expanded.

  • Despite high cost, the underground power distribution system has been preferred by utilities and customers due to its stability and good living environment. Utilities, however, are burdened with the cost of installation as the service region of underground power system is getting enlarged. In this paper, a design method is proposed in order to reduce the construction cost of underground distribution system. That is an optimum algorithm, which can increase the total number of pipes in a limited space compared with a conventional design method. As a result, the proposed design method can reduce efficiently the construction cost of underground distribution system.

  • There are a number of reported instances of actual pipeline rupture during power line faults caused by melting of the pipe wall. This type of hazard was considered to be among the most serious of AC effects on pipelines in an international survey, comparable to the personnel safety hazard. Moreover, resistance coupling is not only a risk when the pipeline parallels a power line but also when they cross. One method of minimizing the effects of resistive coupling is by maintaining an appropriate separation distance between the pipeline and tower. This paper investigate the experiment for separation distance between the powerline earth and pipelines.

  • Due to rapid urbanization and industrialization, water supply and sewer line systems are also developed relevantly. Manhole is an essential component structure of the pipeline system. Manhole is a structure constructed to accommodate the direction, dimension, differences in level, and easy of maintenance in the pipeline system. In this paper we present the result of investigations pertaining to the structural behavior of PVC sewer manhole buried underground. In the paper mechanical properties of PVC material are reported. In addition, by the finite element analysis (FEA), we confirmed that a PVC double-wall corrugated pipe manhole, when it is buried underground, is safe for the stress as well as buckling strength if the manhole is constructed within the suggested limit of buried depth.

  • PURPOSES : This study identifies the causes and the mechanism of the occurrence of underground cavities. METHODS : A case study on cave-in and a series of model tests with a small soil chamber were conducted. RESULTS : A hypothesis about the mechanism of the cave-in in road was established, and the basic influencing factors on underground cavity expansion were identified. CONCLUSIONS : It was found that the characteristics of shear strength of soil and direction of water flow had a larger influence on cavity formation and expansion than the characteristics of internal erosion. In addition, large cavities suddenly expanded when cavities were caused owing to breakage of buried sewer pipe.
