The main risk factors of tunnel excavation through urban areas are ground settlement and surface sink which caused by ground conditions, excavation method, groundwater condition, excavation length, support method, etc. In the process of ground settlement assessment, the numerical analysis should be conducted considering the displacement and stress due to tunnel excavation. Therefore a technique that can simplify such process and easily evaluate the influence of tunnel excavation is needed. This study focused on the tunnelling-induced ground settlement which is main consideration of underground safety impact assessment. The parametric numerical analyses were performed considering such parameters as ground conditions, tunnel depth, and lateral distance from tunnel center line, etc. A simplified ground settlement evaluation chart was suggested by analyzing tendency of ground subsidence, lateral influence area and character by depth. The applicability of the suggested settlement evaluation chart was verified by comparative numerical analysis of settlement characteristics.

As the construction of trans infrastructure using the underground tunnel have been rapidly increased, various nearby excavation of existed underground facility including subway structure has been occurred in urban tunnelling. The concern and worry relating to the safety and stability of the existed facility by nearby excavation is becoming the key issues in urban tunnelling. In this study, it was conducted for existed the subway station structure at Seoul subway line which was closely located in the new Dongbuk urban metro railway to determine the behavior characteristics of station structure according to adjacent tunnel construction. Also, it was reviewed the evaluation of the safety zone and excavation method for subway structure. And after a review of damage evaluation, track irregularities and structural calculation by using a numerical analysis, stability of the subway structure according to nearby tunnel excavation was evaluated to be secured. This study is expected to be applied as useful reference in advance if you need to review the effects of existed structure according to nearby construction in complex urban tunnelling.

Urban densification has necessitated the development of subterranean spaces such as subway networks and underground tunnels to facilitate the dispersal and movement of populations. Development of these underground spaces requires excavation from the ground surface, which can induce groundwater flow and potentially lead to ground subsidence and sinkholes, damaging structures. To mitigate these risks, it is essential to model groundwater flow prior to construction, analyze its characteristics, and predict potential groundwater discharge during excavation. In this study, we collected meteorological, topographical, and soil conditions data for the city of ○○, where tunnel construction was planned. Using the Visual MODFLOW program, we modeled the groundwater flow. Excavation sections were set as drainage points to monitor groundwater discharge during the excavation process, and the effectiveness of seepage control measures was assessed. The model was validated by comparing measured groundwater levels with those predicted by the model, yielding a coefficient of determination of 0.87. Our findings indicate that groundwater discharge is most significant at the beginning of the excavation. Additionally, the presence of seepage barriers was found to reduce groundwater discharge by approximately 59%.
Recently, when being constructed the large structures, the deep excavations have performed to utilize the underground space. As the ground excavation is deeper, the damage of the adjacent structure and the ground is frequently occurred. the Analysis of the retaining structures is necessary to safety of the excavation works. There are many methods such as elasto-plastic theory, FEM, and FDM to analyze the displacement of the retaining structure. In this thesis, GEBA-1 program by the Nakamura-Nakajawa elasto-plastic method was developed. The lateral displacement of the wall was analyzed by the developed program GEBA-1, SUNEX, and EXCAD, and compared with the measured displacement bye the Inclinometer. The monitored fields were three excavation work site in S-I, S-II, and S-III area. Excavation method of each site is braced retaining wall using H-pile. Excavation depth is 14m, 14m, and 8.2m.

This study aims to investigate an economical efficiency of two excavation methods with respect to the room-and-pillar method for the underground space and conventional excavation method, i.e. 2-arch tunnelling method. For feasibility study, an excavation cost for both room-and-pillar method and 2-arch tunnelling method was estimated when the same space in operation was required. It was assumed that properties of reinforcements and rock were adopted from literatures. However, an excavation shape of the room-and-pillar method was assumed not to be the rectangular shape which is a general type in the room-and-pillar method but to be an arch shape in order to compare with the conventional excavation method (2-arch tunnelling) and to achieve the maximum bearing capacity of the structure during excavation. Consequently, the wider space in use or required and the better condition of rock we assumed, the more economical advantage we have in the room-and-pillar method than the 2-arch tunnelling method.

Ground subsidence in urban areas due to excessive development and degraded underground facilities is a serious problem. Geophysical surveys have been conducted to estimate the distribution and scale of cavities and subsidence. In this study, electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) was performed near an area of road subsidence in an urban area. The subsidence arose due to groundwater leakage that carried soil into a neighboring excavation site. The ERT survey line was located between the main subsidence area and an excavation site. Because ERT data are affected by rapid topographic changes and surrounding structures, the influence of the excavation site on the data was analyzed through field-scale numerical modeling. The effect of an excavation should be considered when interpreting ERT data because it can lead to wrong anomalous results. A method for performing 2D inversion after correcting resistivity data for the effect of the excavation site was proposed. This method was initially tested using a field-scale numerical model that included the excavation site and subsurface anomaly, which was a loosened zone, and was then applied to field data. In addition, ERT data were interpreted using an existing in-house 3D algorithm, which considered the effect of excavation sites. The inversion results demonstrated that conductive anomalies in the loosened zone were greater compared to the inversion that did not consider the effects of excavation.

In cable tunnel construction using TBM, the vertical shaft is an essential structure for entrance and exit of TBM equipment and power lines. Since a shaft penetrates the ground vertically, it often encounters rock mass. Blasting or rock splitting methods, which are mainly used to the rock excavation, cause public complaints due to the noise, vibration and road occupation. Therefore, mechanical excavation using vertical shaft excavation machine are considered as an alternative to the conventional methods. However, at the current level of technology, the vertical excavation machine has limitation in its performance when applied for high strength rock with a compressive strength of more than 120 MPa. In this study, the potential utilization of waterjet technology as an excavation assistance method was investigated to improve mechanical excavation performance in the hard rock formations. Rock cutting experiments were conducted to verify the cutting performance of the abrasive waterjet. Based on the experimental result, it was found that ensuring excavation performance with respect to changing in ground conditions can be achieved by adjusting waterjet parameters such as standoff distance, traverse speed and water pressure. In addition, based on the relationship between excavation performance, uniaxial compressive strength and RQD, it was suggested that excavation performance could be improved by artificially creating joints using the abrasive waterjet. It is expected that these research results can be utilized as fundamental data for the introduction of vertical shaft excavation machines in the future.

The development and use of underground space in the city have been expanded considerably worldwide due to the growing population and traffic. Because the construction of underground causes some problems including traffic jam and safety accidents, the non-open excavation construction method are commonly used. NTR (New Tubular Roof) method which is one of the non-open excavation method is investigated in this study. The structural safety of underground structures by using NTR method is evaluated by ANSYS 9.0. The tubular roof according to diameters are analysed by ANSYS 9.0 at critical construction step. Finally, according the diameter and thickness of tubular roof the stress nad dispacement are analyzed and then the The efficient use of tubular roof is suggested from relationship between tubular's thickness and stress condition.
In urban area, the use of mechanical excavators (e.g., TBM and roadheader) has been increasing in construction of tunnelling and underground space. The undercutting technology, which is modified from the conventional rock-cutting concept, has been developed by advanced countries. Therefore, research on the latest technology of mechanical excavation is required, and keeping carrying out research on conventional mechanical tunneling methods at the same time. In this study, as a fundamental study of the undercutting technique, the principle and concept of the undercutting were introduced, as well as the current status of the research of advanced countries. The undercutting is applicable as a full-face excavation method for the tunnels and underground spaces, as well as an auxiliary(partial-face excavation) method for extension of the existing tunnels.
For the deep underground excavation site with the geological complexity of soft seam and hard rock, the numerical analysis and in-situ measurement on the behaviors of roadway and surrounding rock according to stepwise excavation of the steep soft seam are carried out. The strata behavior is modeled using elasto-plastic FEM considering the empirical failure criteria of Hoek & Brown and the strain-softening model. Hydraulic pressure capsule, MPBX and tape extensometer are installed around the roadway for the in-situ measurement of rock stress and deformation. Despite the complexity of geology and excavation procedure, the elasto-plastic analysis considering the empirical failure criteria of Hoek & Brown and the strain-softening model shows good agreement with the in-situ measurement. Comparison of numerical modeling with in-situ measurement enables to predict the behaviors of the roadway and to obtain design parameters for the excavation and support at depth.
