The assessment on characteristics of hydraulic behavior and water quality variations of underground reservoirs of buildings were studied. Firstly, it was thought that underground reservoir capacities($m^3$) of buildings should be not determinated by the uniform and same methods but be estimated on the basis of the dwelling areas on dominated households and their residential characteristics, because these characteristics influence significantly on actual water usages and patterns of buildings. Secondly, it was likely that the average reduction rate of residual chlorine in underground reservoirs were affected from the their capacities, because the average reduction rate of residual chlorine in underground reservoirs under $1,000m^3$ was 43 percent, on the other hand, that rate of underground reservoirs over $1,000m^3$ was 60 percent. Thirdly, through the field investigation, the retention time of drinking water in underground reservoirs were in the range from 0.3 day to 3.9 day. In addition to, the average reduction rate of residual chlorine were depended largely on the retention time of drinking water. When the retention time was under 24 hours, the average reduction rate of residual chlorine was 45 percent, and in case of over 24 hours, was 49 percent. Fourth, water level in underground reservoirs was averagely varied in the range from 0.1 m to 2.65 m at the height of underground reservoirs. If considered actual height of underground reservoirs, 37.6 percent of the height of underground reservoirs was only used. Consequently, the frequency of the inflow and outflow of drinking water in underground reservoir were very increased, and had an effect on the reduction of residual chlorine. Lastly, the investigations on hydraulic structure characteristics of underground reservoirs inside showed the locations of inflow and outflow of drinking water almost were in the opposite direction. And some buildings had several baffles in the middle. Nevertheless, their installations had no beneficial for the improvement of water quality.
In the Construction Technology Promotion Act (CTPA) of the Republic of Korea, safety management cost is enforced as a statutory cost that must be included in the budget of construction projects. However, the construction of underground electric power transmission facilities (UEPTFs) is not included in the category of construction works defined in the CTPA. Consequently, the statutory safety management cost does not apply to the construction of UEPTFs. To overcome this limitation, the clients of UEPTF construction projects generally provide internal guidelines enabling the addition of the safety management cost in the project budget. Nevertheless, even after the execution of the internal guidelines, some important cost items are omitted from the budget owing to the incompleteness of the guidelines. In this context, this paper proposes a complete set of accounting items and their calculation methods for appropriate budgeting of the safety management cost of UEPTF construction projects. To this end, the current budgeting method of the safety management cost of UEPTF construction projects is analyzed, and a questionnaire study is performed to confirm the necessary cost items and their appropriate calculation methods. Based on the results of the questionnaire study, a set of accounting items and their calculation criteria for the budgeting of the safety management cost of UEPTF construction projects are proposed.
The reliable estimation of the system parameters and the accurate prediction of the system behavior are important to design underground structures safely and economically. Especially, the elastic modulus and the in-situ stresses are very important parameters in predicting the behavior of the underground structure. Therefore, the back analysis using the field measurement data is developed to determine accurately the elastic modulus and the in-situ stresses of the underground structural system in this study. A back analysis using the combined finite and boundary element is developed. It can consider the far field boundary condition and is efficient in computation. In this study, a back analysis is performed to predict behaviors of underground structures for the real construction site. The comparison between the results of the back analysis with field measurement data and the obtained material properties from the field test shows good agreement for the real construction site.
In recent years, residential apartment building parking lots are built in underground spaces, and with conjunction to improve the environment of the urban area, artificial greeen roof systems are installed on the upper slabs. However, early plant growth are resulting in root penetration into concrete cracks and in turn into the waterproofing membranes, leading to degradation and damaging of the waterproofing system and structural durability. This issue highlights a problem of conventional maintenance system of concrete structures, and proposals for amendments follow. In this study, a waterproofing and root barrier construction design for the upper slabs of residential building underground parking lots is proposed, and motioned to be added into future construction specifications.
It is required to response to the demand for new space due to high density of population and buildings in urban area. In particular, in case of big cities such as Seoul where the lack of new construction site due to the depletion of available space, existing buildings must be demolished for new construction. Utilization of urban underground space can be an alternative to solve for urban space problems. There are applications of underpinning methods using micropiles for existing buildings. Sometimes, the difficulties come from the compact space available for new foundation underneath the existing ones. In this paper, a novel underpinning method is introduced which can solve the space restriction problems underneath existing columns.
Flow-able backfill is known as soil-cement slurry, void fill, and controlled low-strength material (CLSM). The benefits of CLSM include reduced equipment costs, faster construction, re-excavation in the future, and the ability to place material in confined spaces such as narrow parts nearly impossible for compaction or perimeter of underground power cables. A review of some recent full-scale tests carried out by KEPRI on slurry backfill materials for application in underground power cable was presented. Based on this research, applicability was assessed and compare to results of laboratory tests for improved slurry materials with optimal mixture contents.
Contemporary concrete structures make use of underground spaces as parking lots and other comfort facilities for efficiency purposes. As underground environmental conditions are in constant exposure to degradation factors from the environment such as groundwater, hydraulic and soil pressure, structural movement and settlement, structural defects in the form of leakage occur. Current maintenance regulations and regimes are unable to respond to this field, as degradation mechanisms in underground environments are still unclear. In this regard, this study proposes the utilization of integrated information sharing system that can provide various technical information for construction designs to prevent leakages in underground concrete structures.
