  • Cold expansion of fastener holes is a mechanical process widely used in the aerospace industry. This treatment leads to an improvement of fatigue behavior due to the developed compressive residual stresses on the hole surface. Despite its importance to aerospace industries, little attention has been devoted to the accurate modeling of the process. This study is devoted to the modeling and simulation of the residual stress resulting from the cold expansion of two adjacent fastener holes. Simultaneous cold expansion of two adjacent holes lead to much higher compressive residual stress than sequential cold expansion.

  • This paper proposes a new method for choice of the best transmission system expansion plan on the side of highest satisfaction level of decision maker using fuzzy integer programming. The proposed method considers the permissibility and ambiguity of the investment budget (economics) for constructing the new transmission lines and the delivery marginal rate (reliability criteria) of the system by modeling the transmission expansion problem as a fuzzy integer programming one. It solves the optimal strategy (reasonable as well as flexible) using a fuzzy set theory-based on branch and bound method that utilizes a network flow approach and the maximum flow-minimum cut set theorem. Under no or only a very small database for the evaluation of reliability indices, the proposed technique provides the decision maker with a valuable and practical tool to solve the transmission expansion problem considering problem uncertainties. Test results on the 63-bus test system show that the proposed method is practical and efficiently applicable to transmission expansion planning.

  • This paper presents a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis to investiagate the effect of expansion chamber on overpressure reduction in protective tunnels subjected to detonation of high explosives. A commercial CFD code, Viper::Blast, was used to model the blast waves in a protective tunnel with a length of 160 m, width of 8.9 m and height of 7.2 m. Blast scenarios and simulation matrix were establihsed in consideration of the design parameters of expansion chamber, including the chamber lengths of 6.1 m to 12.1 m, widths of 10.7 m to 97 m, length to width ratios of 0.0 to 5.0, heights of 8.0 m and 14.9 m, and ratios of chamber to tunnel width of 1.2 to 10.9 m. A charge weight of TNT of 1000 kg was used. The mesh sizes of the numerical model of the protective tunnel were determined based on a mesh convergence study. A parametric study based on the simulation matrix was performed using the proposed CFD tunnel model and the optimized shape of expansion chamber of the considered tunnel was then proposed based on the numerical results. Design recommendations for the use of expansion chamber in protective tunnel under blast loads to reduce the internal overpressures were finally provided.

  • In [6], it is proved that the lengths of periods occurring in the ${\beta}$-expansion of a rational series r noted by $Per_{\beta}(r)$ depend only on the denominator of the reduced form of r for quadratic Pisot unit series. In this paper, we will show first that every rational r in the unit disk has strictly periodic ${\beta}$-expansion for Pisot or Salem unit basis under some condition. Second, for this basis, if $r=\frac{P}{Q}$ is written in reduced form with |P| < |Q|, we will generalize the curious property "$Per_{\beta}(\frac{P}{Q})=Per_{\beta}(\frac{1}{Q})$".

  • It has been known that buildings having inappropriate expansion joints in their spacings may be subject to exterior damages due to extensive cracks on the outer walls under service loads, and structural damages due to excessive moment induced by temperature changes at ultimate load conditions. Rather inconsistent code provisions are available regarding spacings of expansion joints from different foreign structural codes and even worse, no quantiative measure on spacings is given in our codes for building structures. In order to establish a rational measure on the spacing of expansion joints, theoretical approaches are taken in this study. The developed theoretical formula is, then, converted to design chart for structural designer's convenience in its use. The chart considers both service and ultimate load stages.

  • The power expansion planning is large and capital intensive capacity planning. In the past the expansion planning was established with the proper supply reliability in order to minimize social cost. However, the planning not used cost minimizing objective function in the power markets with many market participants. This paper proposed the power expansion planning process in the power markets. This system is composed of Regulator and GENCO's model. Regulator model used multi-criteria decision making rule. GENCO model is very complex problem. Thus, this system transacted the part by several scenario assuming GENCO model.

  • This paper proposes a method for choosing the best composite power system expansion plan considering a contingency security criterion. The proposed method minimizes the investment budget fer constructing new transmission lines subject to contingency criterion. it models the power system expansion problem as an integer programming one. The method solves for the optimal strategy using a branch and bound method that utilizes a network flow approach and the maximum flow-minimum cut set theorem. Although the proposed method is applied to a simple sample study, the test results demonstrate that the proposed method is suitable for solving the power system expansion-planning problem subject to practical future uncertainties.

  • A cycle analysis was performed for 2-stage expansion Claude refrigerators by a numerical method. The refrigerators are under recent development such that the reciprocating expanders of Collins cycle are replaced by new turboexpanders. A computer simulation program was written to predict the coefficient of performance of the refrigerators for several input parameters. It was found out that there exist unique optimum values for the ratio of expanded mass through the turboexpanders to the total mass and for the intermediate pressure of the 2-stage expansion. The maximum coefficient of performance was about $5{\times}10^{-4}$ at the optimal operation.

  • This study investigated particle expansion in basic oxygen furnace slag (BOF) and desulfurization slag (DSS) after heat curing by using the volume method. Concrete hydration was accelerated by heat curing. The compressive strength, ultrasonic pulse velocity, and resistivity of the concrete were analyzed. Maximum expansion occurred in the BOF and DSS samples containing 0.30-0.60 mm and 0.60-1.18 mm particles, respectively. Deterioration was more severe in the BOF samples. In the slag aggregates for the complete replacement of fine aggregate, severe fractures occurred in both the BOF and DSS samples. Scanning electron microscopy revealed excess CH after curing, which caused peripheral hydration products to become extruded, resulting in fracture.

  • Thermomechanical characteristics of rocks such as thermal shock, thermal expansion, thermal cracking were experimentally investigaed using Iksan granite, Cheonan tonalite and Chung-ju dolomite to obtain the basic data for proper design and Chung-ju dolomite to obtain the basic data for proper design and stability analysis of underground structures subjected to temperature changes. The effect of thermal shock did not appear when the heating speed was under 3$^{\circ}C$/min. and there existed little difference between multi-staged cyclic heating and single-cycled heating. Thermal expansion of rocks was affected by mineral composition, crack porosity and the degree of thermal craking. In quartz-beraring multimineralic rocks such as Iksan granite and Cheonan tonalite, the thermal expansion coefficient increaseed continuously with temperature rise, but that of Chung-ju dolomite which was a monomineralic rock showed a constant value for the temperature above 250$^{\circ}C$, Chung-ju dolomite yielded the lowest critical threshold temperature(Tc) of 100$^{\circ}C$ and unstable thermal cracking was initiated above the new threshold temperature(Tc')of 300$^{\circ}C$. Above Tc' thermal cracks grew but they were not interconnected. Iksan granite showed closing of microcracks to the temperature of 100$^{\circ}C$, then expanded linearly to Tc of 200$^{\circ}C$. Above Tc, thermal cracking was initiated and progressed rapidly and almost all the grain boundaries were cracked at 600$^{\circ}C$. Cheonan tonalite also showed similar behavior to iksan granite except that Tc was 350$^{\circ}C$ and that thermal cracks propagated more rapidly. Thermal expansions calculated by Turner's equation were found to be valid in predicting the thermal expansion and cracking behavior of rocks.
