  • There have been rapid increases to the demands for modeling diverse and complex spatial phenomena and utilizing spatial data through the computer across all the aspects of society. As a result, the importance and utilization of remote sensing and GIS's(geographic information systems) have also increased. It can produce digital data of enormous accuracy and value by incorporating remote sensing images into GIS analysis technology and make various thematic maps by classifying and analyzing land cover. Once such a map is made for the target area, it can easily do modeling and constant monitoring based on the map, revise the database with ease, and thus efficiently update geo-spatial information. Under the goal of analyzing changes to land cover along the road by combining the remote sensing and GIS technology, this study classified land cover from the images of two periods, detected changes to the six classes over ten years, and obtained statistics about the study area's quantitative area changes in order to provide basic decision making data for urban planning and development. By analyzing land use along the road, one can set up plans for the area along the road and the downtown to supplement each other.

  • Background: Abandoned coal piles after the closure of mines have a potential negative influence on the environment, such as soil acidification and heavy metal contamination. Therefore, revegetation by efficient species is required. For this, we wanted to identify the role of Silene acaulis in the succession of coal piles as a pioneer and a nurse plant. S. acaulis is a well-studied cushion plant living in the Arctic and alpine environments in the northern hemisphere. It has a highly compact cushion-like form and hosts more plant species under its canopy by ameliorating stressful microhabitats. In this research, we surveyed vegetation cover on open plots and co-occurring species within S. acaulis cushions in coal piles with different slope aspects and a control site where no coal was found. The plant cover and the similarity of communities among sites were compared. Also, the interaction effects of S. acaulis were assessed by rarefaction curves. Results: S. acaulis was a dominant species with the highest cover (6.7%) on the coal piles and occurred with other well-known pioneer species. Plant communities on the coal piles were significantly different from the control site. We found that the pioneer species S. acaulis showed facilitation, neutral, and competition effect in the north-east facing slope, the south-east facing slope, and the flat ground, respectively. This result was consistent with the stress gradient hypothesis because the facilitation only occurred on the north-east facing slope, which was the most stressed condition, although all the interactions observed were not statistically significant. Conclusions: S. acaulis was a dominant pioneer plant in the succession of coal piles. The interaction effect of S. acaulis on other species depended on the slope and its direction on the coal piles. Overall, it plays an important role in the succession of coal piles in the High Arctic, Svalbard.

  • In this study, the correlation between Half Cell Potential(HCP) and the corrosion influencing factors was analyzed with considering three levels of water-cement ratio, the concentration of chloride solution, and cover depth. As a result of long-term corrosion monitoring, HCP behavior was close to the critical corrosion potential(-350 mV) in all water-cement ratios in the case of 3.5 % and 7.0 % chloride concentration. Regarding the passed charge test in 548 curing days, the passed charge results were improved to 'Moderate' grade. Multiple regression analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between corrosion influencing factors and HCP, and it was evaluated that the effects of influencing factors to HCP were in the order of chloride concentration, water-cement ratio, and cover depth. In the case of the relationship between HCP and the passed charge, the coefficient of determination showed a high level of 0.9, which yielded a close correlation between the passed charge and HCP.

  • Soil-steel structures have been used for the underpass, or drainage systems in the road embankment. This type of structures sustain external load using the correlations with the steel wall and engineered backfill materials. Buried flexible conduits made of corrugated steel plates for the coastal road was tested under vehicle loading to investigate the effects of live load. Testing conduits was a circular structure with a diameter of 6.25m. Live-load tests were conducted on two sections, one of which an attempt was made to reinforce the soil cover with the two layers of geo-gird. Hoop fiber strains of corrugated plate, normal earth pressures exerted outside the structure, and deformations of structure were instrumented during the tests. This paper describes the measured static and dynamic load responses of structure. Wall thrust by vehicle loads increased mainly at the crown and shoulder part of the conduit. However additional bending moment by vehicle loads was neglectable. The effectiveness of geogrid-reinforced soil cover on reducing hoop thrust is also discussed based on the measurements in two sections of the structure. The maximum thrusts at the section with geogrid-reinforced soil cover was 85-92% of those with un-reinforced soil cover in the static load tests of the circular structure; this confirms the beneficial effect of soil cover reinforcement on reducing the hoop thrust. However, it was revealed that the two layers of geogrid had no effect on reducing the overburden pressure at the crown level of structure. The obtained values of DLA decrease approximately in proportion to the increase in soil cover from 0.9m to 1.5m. These values are about 1.2-1.4 times higher than those specified in CHBDC.

  • The importance of GPS was great1y increased for aviation after the completion of the GPS satellite constellation in December of 1993. The Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) is being developed for operational use in the United States and also a similar system, European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), is also under development in Europe. There are needs to develop Wide Area Differential GPS (WADGPS) covering Korea to complete the GNSS mentioned above. The GNSS then allows international aviation users to fly world-wide with a single avionic system. In case of DGPS, it can cover within 100km and needs many stations for serving the widely-spreaded users. But WADGPS can cover wide area via fewer stations than DGPS. In this paper we propose an Korea version of WADGPS and discuss on algorithms and performances.

  • Soil loss is widely recognized as a threat to farm livelihoods and ecosystem integrity worldwide. Soil loss prediction models can help address long-range land management planning under natural and agricultural conditions. Even though it is hard to find a model that considers all forms of erosion, some models were developed specifically to aid conservation planners in identifying areas where introducing soil conservation measures will have the most impact on reducing soil loss. Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) computes the average annual erosion expected on hillslopes by multiplying several factors together: rainfall erosivity (R), soil erodibility (K), slope length and steepness (LS), cover management (C), and support practice (P). The value of these factors is determined from field and laboratory experiments. This study calculated soil erosion using GIS-based RUSLE model in Imha basin and examined soil erosion source area using SPOT 5 high-resolution satellite image and land cover map. As a result of analysis, dry field showed high-density soil erosion area and we could easily investigate source area using satellite image. Also we could examine the suitability of soil erosion area applying field survey method in common areas (dry field & orchard area) that are difficult to confirm soil erosion source area using satellite image.

  • In this study, the characteristics of anti-pollution coatings on glass substrates through annealing treatment were investigated. To investigate the change of properties by coating method and number of annealing treatment, after the anti-pollution coating was performed on the surface of glass substrate in three ways, the annealing treatment was performed by setting three kinds of annealing treatment conditions. The annealing treatment method is a torch using gas, which is advantage in that it can be installed directly on the site in an easy way compared with a annealing treatment process which is generally difficult. The anti-pollution properties, contact angle, transmittance, hardness, and adhesion of films on glass substrate were measured under 9 conditions of combination of coating methods and annealing treatment conditions. It was confirmed that as the number of annealing treatment increases, the anti-pollution property of the film synthesized on glass substrate becomes better.

  • Possible links among cosmic ray, cloud, and climate have scientific uncertainties. The reputed topics have been highly controversial during several decades. A link between the atmospheric ionization by galactic cosmic rays (GCR), which is modulated by solar activities, and global cloud cover was firstly proposed in 1997. Some researchers suggested that the GCR can stimulate the formation of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in the atmosphere, and then the higher CCN concentrations may lead to an increase of cloud cover, resulting in a cooling of the Earth's climate, and vise versa. The CLOUD (Cosmic leaving outdoor droplets) experiment was designed to study the effect of GCR on the formation of atmospheric aerosols and clouds under precisely controlled laboratory conditions. A state-of-the-art chamber experiment has greatly advanced our scientific understanding of the aerosol formation in early stage and its nucleation processes if the GCR effect is considered or not. Many studies on the climate-GCR (or space weather) connection including the CLOUD experiment have been carried out during the several decades. Although it may not be easy to clarify the physical connection, the recent scientific approaches such as the laboratory experiments or modeling studies give some implications that the research definitively contributed to reduce the scientific uncertainties of natural and anthropogenic aerosol radiative forcing as well as to better understand the formation processes of fine particulate matters as an important parameter of air quality forecast.

  • A practical implementation method of squeeze-film aeroelastic disk vibration damping and its practical design performance are presented to provide a solution method to meet the tight TMR(Track Mis-Registration) design budget of high-TPI HDDs. Most previous research results are mainly based on the component-level study in the 'open-cover state' which is far from the realistic operation HDD condition. In this study, the squeeze-film disk damping effect is widely investigated under the realistic drive-level condition of 'enclosed-cover state.' It is found that the proper aeroelastic gap(s) between disk(s) and adjacent surface(s) to give significant vibration reduction in the enclosed HDD operating conditions can be achieved not only by classical well-known squeeze-film damping gaps such as very small 0.0x-millimeter level gaps which are not practically implementable in mass-production HDDs, but also by a few 0.x millimeter which is possible for designing realistic HDD design. The various experimental results including drive-level PES are also presented to prove feasibility of the optimal disk damper design for 93kTPI HDDs.

  • A finite element method is used for the force analysis of semicircular arch shaped corrugated steel plate lining. The assessment of stability and behavior for several conditions are executed from the analysis of soil-structure interaction in accordance with CHBDC (Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, 2000). One fortieth scaled model tests were conducted on the semicircular arch lining to verify the FEM analysis results under the earth-load conditions.
