Recently, in proportion to the increase of earthquake occurrence-frequency and its strength in the countries within the circum-pan Pacific earthquake belt, a concept of earthquake-proof design for huge structures containing liquid has been growing up. This study deals with the refinement of classical numerical approaches for the free vibration analysis of separated structure and liquid motions. According to the liquid-structure interaction, LNG-storage tanks exhibit two distinguished eigenmodes, the sloshing mode and the bulging mode. For the sloshing -mode analysis, we refine the classical rigid-tank model by reflecting the container flexibility. While, for the bulging-mode analysis, we refine the classical uncoupled structural vibration system by taking the liquid free-surface fluctuation into consideration. We first construct the refined dynamic models for both problems, and present the refined numerical procedures. Furthermore, in order for the efficient treatment of large-scale matrices, we employ the Lanczos iteration scheme and the frontal-solver for our test FEM program. With the developed program we carry out numerical experiments illustrating the theoretical results.

A study is made, in the framework of linear potential theory, to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of two-dimensional wave-energy absorbers as like the Salter's duck and an oscillating cam with Lewis-form section, which undergo uncoupled heaving and rolling motions in an incident linear gravity wave in deep water. Wave energy is supposed to be extracted by a linearly damped generator with an spring. Some well-known formulae in ship hydrodynamics such as Haskind-Newman relation and Bessho-Newman relation are utilized in forms of Kochin functions to derived expressions for efficiency, breaking effect and drift force of the absorber. Maximum ideal efficiency of 100% can be arrived at an prescribed tuning frequency. Coupling effect is also examined to assess the detrimental effect of sway on efficiency. From numerical calculations for both types of two-dimensional devices it may be concluded that a wave-energy absorber functions at the same time as a wave breaker and that the drift force acting on the device becomes smaller when it absorbs wave energy than as it oscillates freely. Finally the study is extended to an infinite array system, equivalent to a body in a canal, to show that all incident wave energy can be absorbed regardless of the absorber's size, only if the optimum space and the optimum condition of control are realized.

The reinforced concrete farm silos on the elastic foundatin are widely used in agricultural engineering because of their superior structural performance, economy and attractive appearance. Various methods for the analysis and design of farm silo, such as the analytical method, the finite difference method, and the finite element methods, can be used. But the analytical procedure can not be applied for the intricate conditions in practice. Therefore lately the finite element method has been become in the structural mechanics. In this paper, a method of finite element analysis for the cylindrical farm silo on ffness matrix for the elastic foundation governed by winkler's assumption. A complete computer programs have been developed in this paper can be applicable not only to the shell structures on elastic foundation but also to the arbitrary three dimensional structures. Assuming the small deflection theory, the membrane and plate bending behaviours of flat plate element can be assumed mutually uncoupled. In this case, the element has 5 degrees of freedom per node when defined in the local coordinate system. However, when the element properties are transformed to the global coordinates for assembly, the 6th degree of freedom should be considered. A problem arises in this procedure the resultant stiffness in the 6th degree of freedom at this node will be zero. But this singularity of the stiffness matrix can be eliminated easily by merely replacing the zero diagonal by dummy stiffness.
Objective: To compare head and hand movement patterns during squash forehand motions between experts and less-skilled squash players. Method: Four experts and four less-skilled squash players participated in this study. They performed squash forehand swings and a VICON motion analysis system was used to obtain displacement and velocity data of the head and right hand during the movement. Mann-Whitney U-tests were performed to compare head and hand range of motion and peak velocity, and cross-correlation was performed to analyze the head-hand coordination pattern between groups in three movement directions. Results: In terms of head and hand kinematic data, experts had greater head range of motion during down swings than less-skilled squash players. Experts seemed to reach peak hand velocity at impact by reaching peak head velocity followed by hand peak velocity within a given temporal sequence. In terms of head-hand coordination patterns, both groups revealed high positive correlations in the medial-lateral direction, indicating a dominant allocentric coordination pattern. However, experts had uncoupled coordination patterns in the vertical direction and less-skilled squash players had high positive correlations. These results indicate that the head-hand movement pattern likely an important factor squash forehand movement. Conclusion: Analysis of head and hand movement patterns could be a key variable in squash training to reach expert-level performance.
Magnetoresistance of NiFeCo/Cu/NiFeCo/FeMn uncoupled exchange biased sandwiches has been studied. The magnetoresistance change ratio, ${\Delta}R/R_{s}$ showed 4.1 % at a saturation field as low as 11 Oe in $Si/Ti(50\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/Cu(23\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/FeMn(150\;{\AA})/Cu(50\;{\AA})$ spin valve structure. In this system, the magnetoresistance was affected by interlayer material and thickness. When Ti and Cu were used as the interlayer material in this structure, maximum magnetoresistance change ratio were 0.32 % and 4.1 %, respectively. 6.1 % MR ratio was obtained in $Si/Ti(50\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/Cu(15\;{\AA})/NiFeCo(70\;{\AA})/FeMn(150\;{\AA})/Cu(50\;{\AA})$ spin valve structure. The magnetoresistance change ratio decreased monotonically as the interlayer thickness increased. It was found that the exchange bias field exerted by FeMn layer to the adjacent NiFeCo layer was ~25 Oe, far smaller than that reported in NiFe/Cu/NiFe/FeMn spin valve structure(Dieny et. al., ~400 Oe). The relationship between the film texture and exchange anisotropy ha been examined for spin valve structures with Ti, Cu, or non-buffer layer.

An analytical solution is presented to analyze the thermoelastoplastic response of a rotating thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessel made of functionally graded material (FGM). The analysis is based on Tresca's yield condition, its associated flow rule and linear strain hardening material behaviour. The uncoupled theory of thermoelasticity is used, and the plane strain condition is assumed. The material properties except for Poisson's ratio, are assumed to vary nonlinearly in the radial direction. Elastic, partially plastic, fully plastic, and residual stress states are investigated. The heat conduction equation for the one-dimensional problem in cylindrical coordinates is used to obtain temperature distribution in the vessel. It is assumed that the inner surface is exposed to an airstream and that the outer surface is exposed to a uniform heat flux. Tresca's yield criterion and its associated flow rule are used to formulate six different plastic regions for a linearly hardening condition. All these stages are studied in detail. It is shown that the thermoelastoplastic stress response of a rotating FGM pressure vessel is affected significantly by the nonhomogeneity of the material and temperature gradient. The results are validated with those of other researchers for appropriate values of the system parameters and excellent agreement is observed.
The aim of this paper concerns with the nonlinear analysis of cable-stayed bridges including the vibration effect of cable stays. Two models for the cable stay system are built up in the study. One is the OECS (one element cable system) model in which one single element per cable stay is used and the other is MECS (multi-elements cable system) model, where multi-elements per cable stay are used. A finite element computation procedure has been set up for the nonlinear analysis of such kind of structures. For shape finding of the cable-stayed bridge with MECS model, an efficient computation procedure is presented by using the two-loop iteration method (equilibrium iteration and shape iteration) with help of the catenary function method to discretize each single cable stay. After the convergent initial shape of the bridge is found, further analysis can then be performed. The structural behaviors of cable-stayed bridges influenced by the cable lateral motion will be examined here detailedly, such as the static deflection, the natural frequencies and modes, and the dynamic responses induced by seismic loading. The results show that the MECS model offers the real shape of cable stays in the initial shape, and all the natural frequencies and modes of the bridge including global modes and local modes. The global mode of the bridge consists of coupled girder, tower and cable stays motion and is a coupled mode, while the local mode exhibits only the motion of cable stays and is uncoupled with girder and tower. The OECS model can only offers global mode of tower and girder without any motion of cable stays, because each cable stay is represented by a single straight cable (or truss) element. In the nonlinear seismic analysis, only the MECS model can offer the lateral displacement response of cable stays and the axial force variation in cable stays. The responses of towers and girders of the bridge determined by both OECS- and MECS-models have no great difference.
In order to suppress the wind-induced vibrations of the Canton Tower, a pair of active mass driver (AMD) systems has been installed on the top of the main structure. The structural principal directions in which the bending modes of the structure are uncoupled are proposed and verified based on the orthogonal projection approach. For the vibration control design in the principal X direction, the simplified model of the structure is developed based on the finite element model and modified according to the field measurements under wind excitations. The AMD system driven by permanent magnet synchronous linear motors are adopted. The dynamical models of the AMD subsystems are determined according to the open-loop test results by using nonlinear least square fitting method. The continuous variable gain feedback (VGF) control strategy is adopted to make the AMD system adaptive to the variation in the intensity of wind excitations. Finally, the field tests of free vibration control are carried out. The field test results of AMD control show that the damping ratio of the first vibration mode increases up to 11 times of the original value without control.
This study investigates the accuracy of short-term ocean predictions during the development of ocean stratification for the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) Global Seasonal Forecast System version 5 (GloSea5) as well as the effect of atmosphere-ocean coupling on the predictions through a series of sensitive numerical experiments. Model performance is evaluated using the marine meteorological buoys at seas around the Korean peninsular (KP), Tropical Atmosphere Ocean project (TAO) buoys over the tropical Pacific ocean, and ARGO floats data over the western North Pacific for boreal winter (February) and spring (May). Sensitive experiments are conducted using an ocean-atmosphere coupled model (i.e., GloSea5) and an uncoupled ocean model (Nucleus for European Modelling of the Ocean, NEMO) and their results are compared. The verification results revealed an overall good performance for the SST predictions over the tropical Pacific ocean and near the Korean marginal seas, in which the Root Mean Square Errors (RMSE) were $0.31{\sim}0.45^{\circ}C$ and $0.74{\sim}1.11^{\circ}C$ respectively, except oceanic front regions with large spatial and temporal SST variations (the maximum error reached up to $3^{\circ}C$). The sensitive numerical experiments showed that GloSea5 outperformed NEMO over the tropical Pacific in terms of bias and RMSE analysis, while NEMO outperformed GloSea5 near the KP regions. These results suggest that the atmosphere-ocean coupling substantially influences the short-term ocean forecast over the tropical Pacific, while other factors such as atmospheric forcing and the accuracy of simulated local current are more important than the coupling effect for the KP regions being far from tropics during the development of ocean stratification.
In this study, the variation in excess pore pressure during dissipation is estimated by using successive cavity expansion theory and finite difference technique based on axisymmetric uncoupled linear consolidation theory with separate consideration of magnitude and initial distribution $\Delta{u}_{oct}$induced by changes of octahedral normal stress, and $\Delta{u}_{shear}$ induced by changes of octahedral shear stress. The coefficient of consolidation is also estimated by trial and error procedure until the predicted dissipation curve matches the measured curve at a typical degree of dissipation. The proposed method is applied to the results of miniature piezocone tests at Louisiana State University calibration chamber system. Based on the results of interpretation and the comparison with experimental measurements and those from other solutions, the prediction dissipation curves show a good match with those measured during dissipation tests and the values of coefficient of consolidation estimated by proposed method are more close to the range of laboratory measurements than those of other theories.
