  • Type 304SS coatings were performed at 200$\square$ onto AISI 1045 carbon steel substrate using unbalanced magnetron sputtering (UBMS) with an austenitic AISI 304 stainless steel (SS) target of 100mm diameter. The total deposition pressure in the active Ar gas was 2$\times$10$^{-3}$ Torr. Coatings were done at various target power densities and bias voltages. Chemical compositions of metallic elements of the coatings were measured by energy dispersive X-rays spectroscopy (EDS). The structure and the morphology of Type 304SS coatings were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion properties of the coated specimens were examined using electrochemical polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in a deaerated 3.5% NaCl solution. The porosity rate was obtained from a comparison of the dc polarization resistance of the uncoated and coated substrates. Scratch adhesion testing was used to compare the critical loads for different coatings. XRD results showed that the sputtered films exhibit a ferritic b.c.c. $\alpha$-phase. Potentiodynamic polarization curves indicated that all samples had much higher corrosion potential and better corrosion resistance than the bare steel substrate. The corrosion performance increased with increasing power density and the adhesion was enhanced at the bias voltage of -50V. An improvement in the corrosion resistance can be obtained with a better coating adhesion. Finally, an optimized deposition condition for corrosion protection was found as $40W/cm^2$ and -50V.

  • Objective: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the changes in friction between orthodontic brackets and archwires coated with aluminum oxide (Al2O3), titanium nitride (TiN), or chromium nitride (CrN). In addition, the resistance of the coatings to intraoral conditions was evaluated. Methods: Stainless steel canine brackets, 0.016-inch round nickel-titanium archwires, and 0.019 × 0.025-inch stainless steel archwires were coated with Al2O3, TiN, and CrN using radio frequency magnetron sputtering. The coated materials were examined using scanning electron microscopy, an X-ray diffractometer, atomic force microscopy, and surface profilometry. In addition, the samples were subjected to thermal cycling and in vitro brushing tests, and the effects of the simulated intraoral conditions on the coating structure were evaluated. Results: Coating of the metal bracket as well as nickel-titanium archwire with Al2O3 reduced the coefficients of friction (CoFs) for the bracket-archwire combination (p < 0.01). When the bracket and stainless steel archwire were coated with Al2O3 and TiN, the CoFs were significantly lower (0.207 and 0.372, respectively) than that recorded when this bracket-archwire combination was left uncoated (0.552; p < 0.01). The friction, thermal, and brushing tests did not deteriorate the overall quality of the Al2O3 coatings; however, some small areas of peeling were evident for the TiN coatings, whereas comparatively larger areas of peeling were observed for the CrN coatings. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that the CoFs for metal bracket-archwire combinations used in orthodontic treatment can be decreased by coating with Al2O3 and TiN thin films.

  • Drilling processes require a cutting monitoring function that can be analyzed and gives feedback about strange conditions, tool collision and tool wear in real time. In this study, we proposed a drill monitor using the torque from the main spindle in CNC machine tools and a PROFIBUS network as a PLC-based interface. This paper studied drilling torque changes depending on drill size, the repetition cutting of the drilling and the drill's wear in the same cutting conditions. The material of the drills was high speed steel (HSS) and uncoated. The drills chosen were 2.7 mm, 6.7 mm, and 10.0 mm in diameter. These drills were selected because they had basic holes for their taps.

  • The surface characteristics of Ti/TiN films coated on sintered stainless steels (SSS) by electron beam physical vapour deposition (EB-PVD) were investigated. Stainless steel compacts containing 2, 4, and 10wt%Cu were prepared by the electroless Cu-plating method, which results in increased homogenization in the alloying powder. The specimens were coated with Ti and TiN with a 1.0$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness respectively by EB-PVD. The microstructures were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The corrosion behaviors were investigated using a potentiosat in 0.1 M $H_2$$SO_4$, and 0.1M HCl solutions and the corrosion surface was observed using SEM and XPS. The Ti coated specimens showed rough surface compared to Ti/TiN coated specimens. Ti and Ti/TiN coated SSS revealed a higher corrosion and pitting potential from anodic polarization curves than that of Ti and Ti/TiN uncoated SSS. In addition, Ti/TiN coated SSS containing 10wt% Cu exhibited good resistance to pitting corrosion due to the formation of a dense film on the surface and the decrease in interconnected porosity by electroless coated Cu.

  • STS444 with or without $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}MnO_3$ (LSM)-coating was contacted to $La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3$ (LSCF) cathode on various electrolyte materials and the polarization resistance $(R_p)$ was measured by impedance spectroscopy. By making a symmetric half-cell and contacting only one side of the cathode with the interconnect, the effect of chromium (Cr) poisoning was separated from the aging effects. When the LSCF cathode was contacted with LSM-coated STS (stainless steel), $R_p$ of LSCF was lower than that contacted with the uncoated STS. Impedance patterns measured for the working electrode (W.E.), the counter electrode (C.E.) at $600^{\circ}C$ in air were analyzed. Normalized data of net Cr effect showed that $Ce_{0.9}Gd_{0.1}O_2$ (GDC) electrolyte is more tolerant to the chromium poisoning than $La_{0.9}Sr_{0.1}Ga_{0.8}Mg_{0.2}$ (LSGM) or 8 mol% $Y_2O_3-doped$ $ZrO_2$ (YSZ) electrolytes.

  • Multilayered WC-Ti/suv $1-x/Al_{x}$ N coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel using cathodic arc deposition (CAD) method. These coatings contain structural defects such as pores or droplets. Thus, the substrate is not completely isolated from the corrosive environment. The growth defects (pores, pinholes) in the coatings are detrimental to corrosion resistance of the coatings used in severe corrosion environments. The localized corrosion behavior of the coatings was studied in deaerated 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution using electrochemical techniques (potentiodynamic polarization test) and surface analyses (GDOES, SEM, AES, TEM). The porosity was calculated from the result of potentiodynamic polarization test of the uncoated and coated specimens. The calculated porosity is higher in the $WC-Ti_{0.6}$ $Al_{0.4}$ N than others, which is closely related to the packing factor. The positive effects of greater packing factor act on inhibiting the passage of the corrosive electrolyte to the substrate and lowering the localized corrosion kinetics. From the electrochemical tests and surface analyses, the major corrosion mechanisms can be classified into two basic categories: localized corrosion and galvanic corrosion.

  • The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of 304 stainless steels (STSs) with various coatings (organic coating and dry coating) were examined, and their applicability as bipolar plates in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) was validated. The results showed that the organic-coated samples had a significant decrease in anodic and cathodic current density compared to the uncoated sample. However, an increase in carbon black content in the organic coating or additional heat treatment at 700 ℃ resulted in a decrease in corrosion resistance. In addition, improvements in corrosion resistance achieved by adding TiO2 powder to the organic coating were found to be limited. In contrast, dry coating with TiC and CrC exhibited higher corrosion potential, significantly lower current density, and reduced contact resistance compared to the organic coatings. Notably, the TiC-coated sample showed a comparatively lower current density and more stable behavior than the CrC-coated sample. Based on a series of experimental results, a thin TiC coating without defects is proposed as a promising surface treatment strategy for STS bipolar plates in PEMFC.

  • We investigated the influences of cobalt coating deposited by DC electroplating on the ferritic stainless steel, STS 430, as a protective layer on a metallic interconnect for SOFC applications. Cobalt coated STS 430 revealed a uniform and denser-packing oxide surface and a reduced growth rate of $Cr_2O_3$ scales after oxidation at $800^{\circ}C$in air. Cobalt coating layer was oxidized to $CoCo_2O_4$ and Co containing mixed oxide spinels such as $Co_2CrO_4$, $CoCr_2O_4$, and $CoCrFeO_4$. The area specific resistance value of Co coated sample was $0.020\;{\Omega}cm^2$ lower than that of uncoated at $800^{\circ}C$ in air during 500 h. After 1000 h oxidation, cobalt oxide coating layer suppressed chromium outward diffusion.

  • Polymer cement slurry (PCS) made from organic polymer dispersion and cement has good adhesion to steel, waterproofness and acid resistance due to being of polymer films formed in cement slurry. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the mix design conditions at early curing age of PCS-coating material effected on improvement in bond strength of coated rebar. The test pieces are prepared with two types of polymer dispersions such as St/BA and EVA, four polymer-cement ratios, two types of cement, four coating thicknesses and three curing ages, and tested for the bond strength test. From the test results, in general, bond strength of PCS-coated rebar is better than that of uncoated rebar and epoxy-coated rebar. It is also high bond strength at curing ages of 7-day or less, and coating thicknesses of $75{\mu}m$ and $100{\mu}m$. The maximum bond strength of PCS-coated rebar at curing age of 3-hour is almost same as that of curing age of 1-day and 7-day. The maximum bond strength of PCS-coated rebar with ultra high-early strength cement and St/BA at polymer-cement ratio of 80%, and coating thickness of $100{\mu}m$ is about 1.52 and 1.58 times respectively, the strength of uncoated rebar and epoxy-coated rebar. It is apparent that the curing age, coating thickness, type of polymer and cement are very important factors to improve the bond strength of PCS-coated rebar to cement concrete. We can have basic information that PCS-coated rebar with curing age at 3-hour and coating thickness of $100{\mu}m$ can replace epoxy-coated rebar.
