For a battery module where single cells are connected in series, the single cells should each have a similar state of charge (SOC) to prevent them from being exposed to an overcharge or over-discharge during charge-discharge cycling. To detect the existence of unbalanced SOC cells in a battery module, we propose a simple measurement method using a single-frequency response of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). For a commercially available graphite/nickel-cobalt-aluminum-oxide lithium-ion cell, the cell impedance increases significantly below SOC20%, while the impedance in the medium SOC region (SOC20%-SOC80%) remains low with only minor changes. This impedance behavior is mostly due to the elementary processes of cathode reactions in the cell. Among the impedance values (Z, Z', Z"), the imaginary component of Z" regarding cathode reactions changes heavily as a function of SOC, in particular, when the EIS measurement is performed around 0.1 Hz. Thanks to the significant difference in the time constant of cathode reactions between ≤SOC10% and ≥SOC20%, a single-frequency EIS measurement enlarges the difference in impedance between balanced and unbalanced cells in the module and facilitates an ~80% improvement in the detection signal compared to results with conventional EIS measurements.
The electronystagmography(ENG) means to measure and record CRP(Corneal-Retinal Potential) whenever the eyeball is moved by using a skin electrode stuck to the hi-temporal and the difference of CRP. Both the horizontal and vertical movement are known according to the position of the stuck skin electrode. In this paper, the variable time-constances to record the eyeball signal of the conventional EOG(Electro-Oculograph) Amplifier is chosen. The shorter the time-constance is, the worse the distortion of a signal is. But the unbalanced impedance of the electrode stuck on the hi-temporal is reduced. Also, the longer the time-constance is, the less the distortion of it signal is. But it is sensitive to the change of base line according to the unbalanced impedance. In order to solve these problems, an DC-Amplifier, the distortion of the eyeball signal is globally used. By solving unbalanced impedance problem of EOG amplifier, the distortion ratio of EOG amplifier is improved.
This paper proposes a droop control scheme to compensate the unbalanced line-to-line voltage of unbalanced 3-phase load which is coupled with two inverter-based distributed generations through unequal impedance lines. Unbalanced line-to-line load voltages occur due to using single-phase loads, which brings about bad effects on the coupled inverters and the distributed generations. In order to compensate the unbalanced line-to-line voltages, a positive sequence voltage control was used for sharing the active and reactive power and a negative sequence control was used for reducing the negative sequence voltage. The feasibility of the proposed scheme was first verified by computer simulations, and then experiments with a hardware set-up built in the lab. The experimental results were compared with the simulation results to confirm the feasibility of the proposed scheme.
Power system fault analysis is commonly based on well-known symmetrical component method, which describes power system elements by positive, negative and zero sequence impedance. The majority of fault in transmission lines is unbalanced fault, such as line-to-ground faults, so that both positive and zero sequence impedance is required for fault analysis. When unbalanced fault occurs, zero sequence current flows through earth and ground wires in overhead transmission systems and through cable sheaths and earth in underground transmission systems. Since zero sequence current distribution between cable sheath and earth is dependent on both sheath bondings and grounding configurations, care must be taken to calculate zero sequence impedance of underground cable transmission lines. In this paper, EMTP-based sequence impedance calculation method was described and applied to 345kV cable transmission systems. Calculation results showed that detailed circuit analysis is desirable to avoid possible errors of sequence impedance calculation resulted from various configuration of cable sheath bonding and grounding in underground cable transmission systems.
In this study, we first briefly introduce the effect of circulating current control on the modulation signal of a modular multilevel converter (MMC). The maximum modulation index is also theoretically derived. According to the optimal modulation index analysis and the model in the continuous domain, different DC-side output impedance equivalent models of MMC with/without compensating component are derived. The DC-side impedance of MMC inverter station can be regarded as a series xR + yL + zC branch in both cases. The compensating component of the maximum modulation index is also related to the DC equivalent impedance with circulating current control. The frequency characteristic of impedance for MMC, which is observed from its DC side, is analyzed. Finally, this study investigates the prediction of the DC voltage ripple transfer between two-terminal MMC high-voltage direct current systems under unbalanced conditions. The rationality and accuracy of the impedance model are verified through MATLAB/Simulink simulations and experimental results.
Most of the load distributions in low voltage power feeder distribution systems are designed with approximately balanced and connected at the three phase four wire systems. However, in the user power distribution systems, most of the loads are single & three phase and unbalanced, generating load unbalance. Load unbalance factor is mainly affected by the impedance of load system. Unbalanced current will draw a highly unbalanced voltage. This paper presents a new calculation method for unbalance factor under the load variation at the three phase four wire system. Load unbalance factor is measured by the power quality measurement apparatus and compared with the current unbalance factor. Two methods are indicated similar results.
Grid unbalanced faults can cause core saturation of power transformer and produce lower-order harmonics. These issues increase the electrical stress of power electronic devices and can cause a tripping of an entire HVDC system. In this paper, based on the positive-sequence and negative-sequence impedance model of a VSC-HVDC system as seen from the point of common connection (PCC), the resonance problem is analyzed and the factors determining the resonant frequency are obtained. Furthermore, to suppress over-voltage and over-current during resonance, a novel method using a virtual harmonic resistor is proposed. The virtual harmonic resistor emulates the role of a resistor connected in series with the commutating inductor without influencing the active and reactive power control. Simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC show that the proposed control strategy can suppress resonant over-voltage and over-current. In addition, it can be seen that the proposed strategy improves the safety of the VSC-HVDC system under unbalanced faults.
Power system fault analysis is commonly based on well-known symmetrical component method, which describes power system elements by positive, negative and zero sequence impedance. In case of balanced fault, such as three phase short circuit, transmission line can be represented by positive sequence impedance only. The majority of fault in transmission lines, however, is unbalanced fault, such as line-to-ground faults, so that both positive and zero sequence impedance is required for fault analysis. When unbalanced fault occurs, zero sequence current flows through earth and skywires in overhead transmission systems and through cable sheaths and earth in cable transmission systems. Since zero sequence current distribution between cable sheath and earth is dependent on both sheath bondings and grounding configurations, care must be taken to calculate zero sequence impedance of underground cable transmission lines. In this paper, conventional and EMTP-based sequence impedance calculation methods were described and applied to 345kV cable transmission systems (4 circuit, OF 2000mm2). Calculation results showed that detailed circuit analysis is desirable to avoid possible errors of sequence impedance calculation resulted from various configuration of cable sheath bonding and grounding in underground cable transmission systems.
Studying the control strategy of a microgrid under the load unbalanced state helps to improve the stability of the system. The magnitude of the power fluctuation, which occurs between the power supply and the load, is generated in a microgrid under the load unbalanced state is called negative sequence reactive power $Q^-$. Traditional power distribution methods such as P-f, Q-E droop control can only distribute power with positive sequence current information. However, they have no effect on $Q^-$ with negative sequence current information. In this paper, a stationary-frame control method for power sharing and voltage unbalance compensation in islanded microgrids is proposed. This method is based on the proper output impedance control of distributed generation unit (DG unit) interface converters. The control system of a DG unit mainly consists of an active-power-frequency and reactive-power-voltage droop controller, an output impedance controller, and voltage and current controllers. The proposed method allows for the sharing of imbalance current among the DG unit and it can compensate voltage unbalance at the same time. The design approach of the control system is discussed in detail. Simulation and experimental results are presented. These results demonstrate that the proposed method is effective in the compensation of voltage unbalance and the power distribution.
Most of the loads in industrial power distribution systems are usually balanced and connected to three power systems. However, in the user power distribution systems, partial loads are single & three phase and unbalanced, generating voltage unbalance by the impedance mismatching. Voltage unbalance has detrimental effects on three-phase induction motors, including over heating, line-current unbalance, derating, torque pulsation, low efficiency, etc. This paper presents a scheme on operation states of a three-phase induction motor under the unbalanced voltages with harmonics components. Three-phase voltages applied to the stator winding of the studied induction motor are controlled by respectively adjusting not only fundamental but also harmonics components. Harmonic components at the voltage unbalanced factor(VUF) of the three-phase source voltages can then be examined the different values of VUF on machine's operation characteristics.
