  • This paper proposes a control strategy of total output power ripple cancellation for both of Machine-Side Converter (MSC) and Grid-Side Converter (GSC) in a DFIG under unbalanced grid conditions. The proposed control strategy for the MSC is the zero torque ripple control algorithm with an enhanced LVRT capability. The control algorithm for the MSC exhibits reduced torque pulsation in steady-state unbalanced grid conditions. In addition, this control algorithm also minimizes a peak value of rotor current in transient unbalanced grid conditions. The total output power ripple cancellation control algorithm is adopted in the GSC. The total output power ripple cancellation is achieved by nullifying the oscillating component of the total output active and reactive power at the summing point of stator and rotor of DFIG. The proposed control strategy for the GSC reduces the output power oscillation leading to the improved quality of wind farms output.

  • Stand-alone inverter supplies constant voltage to loads. However, when a three-phase stand-alone inverter supplies unbalanced load, the generated output voltages also become unbalanced. The nonlinear characteristics of inverter dead time cause a more serious distortion in the output voltage. With unbalanced load, voltage distortion caused by dead time differs from voltage distortion under balanced load. Phase voltages in the stationary reference frame include unbalanced odd harmonics and then, d-q axis voltages in the synchronous reference frame have even harmonics with different magnitude, which are mitigated by the proposed multiple resonant controller. This study analyzes the voltage distortion caused by unbalanced load and dead time, and proposes a novel dead time compensation method. The proposed control method is tested on a 10-kW stand-alone inverter system, and shows that total harmonic distortion (THD) is reduced to 1.5% from 4.3%.

  • This paper presents a high power and high efficiency unbalanced Doherty power amplifier used to extend the output power back-off (OPBO). The proposed unbalanced amplifier uses the same type of transistors in both the main amplifier and the peaking amplifier, similar to a conventional symmetric Doherty amplifier. The unbalanced amplifier can have the impedance of a ${\lambda}/4$ transformer located at the output of the main amplifier modified. This enables the OPBO to exceed 6 dB, the maximum OPBO for a conventional symmetric Doherty amplifier. The efficiency and linearity performance of the unbalanced Doherty amplifier are almost same as those found for the asymmetric Doherty amplifier, even though the unbalanced Doherty amplifier structure is simpler than the asymmetric Doherty structure. In order to verify the proposed amplifier performance, a 46 W Doherty amplifier has been both simulated and measured using a CDMA2000 1FA signal. From the measured results, the proposed unbalanced Doherty amplifier achieved an added power efficiency of 38 % and an adjacent channel power ratio of -34 dBc at a 885 kHz offset frequency and -35.6 dBc at a 1.98 MHz offset frequency.

  • In this paper, a feedback linearization control is proposed to regulate the output voltages of a three-phase four-wire inverter under the unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions. First, the nonlinear model of system including the output LC filters is derived in the d-q-0 synchronous reference frame. Then, the system is linearized by the multi-input multi-output feedback linearization. The tracking controllers for d-q-0-components of three-phase line-to-neutral load voltages are designed by linear control theory. The experimental results have shown that the proposed control method gives the good performance in response to the load conditions.

  • This paper presents a control method for reducing the current distortion in an indirect matrix converter (IMC) operating in boost mode under unbalanced input conditions. IMCs operating in boost mode are useful in distributed generation (DG) systems. They are connected with renewable energy systems (RESs) and the grid to transmit the power generated by the RES. However, under unbalanced voltage conditions of the RES, which is connected with the input stage of the IMC operating in boost mode, the input-output currents are distorted. In particular, the output current distortions cause a ripple of the power, which is transferred to the grid. This aggravates the reliability and stability of the DG system. Therefore, in this paper, a control method using positive/negative sequence voltages and currents is proposed for reducing the current distortion of both side in IMCs operating in boost mode. Simulation and experimental results have been presented to validate effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • The rectifier characteristics and the quality of the input current worsens with the increase of unbalances or harmonics of the supply voltages. Rectifier input current harmonics interfere with proper power system operation, reduce rectifier power factor, and limit the power available from a given source. It is of importance to select appropriately the rectifier's output filter inductance to determine the rectifier input current waveform, the input current harmonics, and the power factor. This paper presents a quantitative analysis of single and three phase rectifier input current harmonics, total harmonic distortion, and power factor as a function of the output filter inductance under balanced and unbalanced conditions. Also, its performance under the supply voltage including harmonics be investigated. These results provide a reference for selecting reasonable rectifier's output filter inductance for given harmonics or power factor criterion.

  • It is very important to maintain the balanced output voltage waveforms under the unbalanced DC-link voltages in the four-switch three-phase inverter(FSTPI). In this paper, the improvement of output voltage waveforms is proposed with the aid of DC-link voltage ripple estimation. The proposed method can be implemented without the additional voltage sensor. The proposed method applied to the permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is simulated and experimented in order to verify its feasibility.

  • This paper presents an improved direct power control (DPC) strategy for grid-connected voltage source inverter (VSI) under unbalanced and harmonic grid voltage conditions. Based on the mathematic model of VSI with the negative sequence, 5th and 7th harmonic voltage components consideration, a PI controller is used in the proposed DPC strategy to achieve the average output power regulation. Furthermore, vector PI controller with the resonant frequency tuned at the two times and six times grid fundamental frequency is adopted to regulate both negative and harmonic components, and then two alternative targets of the balanced/sinusoidal current and smooth active/reactive output power can be achieved. Finally, simulation results based on MATLAB validate the availability of the proposed DPC strategy.

  • This paper presents a control strategy to achieve the balanced sinusoidal output currents, as well as sinusoidal input currents for the matrix converter (MC) under unbalanced input voltages. By regulating the modulation index of the converter according to the instantaneous input voltages, the output currents are kept balanced and sinusoidal. In order to obtain sinusoidal input currents, the input power factor angle should be dynamically calculated based on the positive and negative sequence components of the input voltages. This paper proposes a simple method to construct the expected input power factor angle without the complicated sequence component extraction of input voltages. Simulation results are given to validate the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy.

  • The three-phase four-leg voltage-source inverter topology is an interesting option for the three-phase four-wire system. With an additional leg, this topology can achieve superior performance under unbalanced and nonlinear load conditions. However, because of the low bandwidth of conventional controllers in high-power inverter applications, the system cannot guarantee a balanced output voltage under the unbalanced load condition. Most of the methods proposed to solve this problem mainly use the multiple synchronous frame method, which requires several controllers and a large amount of computation because of frame transformation. This study proposes a simple hybrid controller that combines proportional-integral (PI) and resonant controllers in the synchronous frame synchronized with the positive-sequence component of the output voltage of the three-phase four-leg inverter. The design procedure for the controller and the theoretical analysis are presented. The performance of the proposed method is verified by the experimental results and compared with that of the conventional PI controller.
