  • This paper presents numerical analysis result of rotor-bearing system of a multi-stage high pressure pump. Especially resonance possibility, stability and damping factor are estimated for a selected commercial multi-stage high pressure pump. The result shows that it is not easy to avoid resonance of rotor-bearing system against main excitation forces which are residual unbalance force and pressure pulsation. This makes damping effect be more important.

  • Vibration of turbine is concerned with array of last moving blade at lower pressure turbine. When last moving blade at lower pressure turbine was replaced, we must consider mass unbalance problems of blades. If mass unbalance happened at rotor, it is impossible to operate turbine. In this paper, we have how to minimize the mass unbalance problems of last moving blade at lower pressure turbine.

  • The vehicle vibrations result from the exciting forces which are caused by air resistance, engine firing, tire mass unbalance and tire uniformity. Especially, the shake and shimmy phenomena in the steering system are closely related to the vehicle vibration, the tire unbalance, and the tire uniformity. This study presents the shimmy phenomena due to the tire mass unbalance and the tire uniformity in order to investigate their effects.

  • Driving of the engine makes unbalance forces which induces vibration to the engine mount system. Active vibration control must be performed to reduce the vibration and the propagation of structure-born sound. In this study, the engine system is modeled as 3-dim. vibration system including flexible structures and an effective active noise control method is proposed. Also, appropriate actuator and sensor locations and types are selected. The miniature of the engine vibration system with multi-input multi-output is built and an active vibration control with multiple filtered-X LMS algorithm is applied to it. The applied control method was effective to reduce the transmitted vibration power through the rubber mount It showed the feasibility of the control of the engine vibration systems with flexible structures.

  • In the preceding Part I study, for improving the unbalance response vibration of a large PRT motor-generator rotor fundamentally by design, a series of design analyses were carried out for bearing improvement by retrofitting from original plain partial journal bearings, applied for operation at a rated speed of 1,800 rpm, to final tilting pad journal bearings. To satisfy evenly key basic lubrication performances such as the minimum lift-off speed and maximum oil-film temperature, a design solution of 5-pad tilting pad journal bearings and maximizing the direct stiffness by about two times has been achieved. In this Part II study, a detailed rotordynamic analysis of the large PRT motor-generator rotor-bearing system will be performed, applying both the original plain partial journal bearings and the retrofitted tilting pad journal bearings, to confirm the effect of rotordynamic vibration improvement after retrofitting. The results show that the rotor unbalance response vibrations with the tilting pad journal bearings are greatly reduced by as much as about one ninth of those with the plain partial journal bearings. In addition, for the tilting pad journal bearings there exist no critical speed up to the rated speed and just one instance of a concerned critical speed around the rated speed, whereas for the plain partial journal bearings there exist one instance of a critical speed up to the rated speed and two instances of concerned critical speeds around the rated speed.

  • Condition monitoring is very important in turbo machinery because single failure could cause critical damages to its plant. So, automatic fault recognition has been one of the main research topics in condition monitoring area. We have used a relatively new fault recognition method, Hidden Markov Model(HMM), for mechanical system. It has been widely used in speech recognition, however, its application to fault recognition of mechanical signal has been very limited despite its good potential. In this paper, discrete HMM(DHMM) was used to recognize the faults of rotor system to study its fault recognition ability. We set up a rotor kit under unbalance and oil whirl conditions and sampled vibration signals of two failure conditions. DHMMS of each failure condition were trained using sampled signals. Next, we changed the setup and the rotating speed of the rotor kit. We sampled vibration signals and each DHMM was applied to these sampled data. It was found that DHMMs trained by data of one rotating speed have shown good fault recognition ability in spite of lack of training data, but DHMMs trained by data of four different rotating speeds have shown better robustness.

  • A high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to rotating mass unbalance which has harmful effect on many machine tools. Therefore, the balancing procedure to reduce vibration in rotating system is certainly needed for all high-speed spindles. So, balancing procedure was performed with a spindle-bearing system for CNC automatic lathe by using numerical procedure. The spindle is supported by the angular contact ball bearings and the motor rotor is fixed at the middle of spindle. The spindle-bearing system has been investigated using combined methodologies of finite elements and transfer matrices. The balancing was performed through influence coefficient method and the comparison was made by whirl responses between before balancing and after balancing. As a result, balancing of simple spindle model reduced whirl orbit magnitude in case of a completely assembled spindle model.

  • This paper deals with the development of analytical model of a turbocharger and its detail rotordynamic analysis. Two analytical models, which are verified by experimental modal testing, are proposed and the analytical model including rotor shaft extended to compressor and turbine wheel end side is chosen. A rotordynamic analysis includes the critical map, Campbell diagram, stability, and unbalance response, especially nonlinear transient response considering nonlinear fluid film force at bearings. Although the linearized analysis accurately predicts the critical speeds, stability limit, and stability threshold speed, the predicted vibration results are not valid for speeds above the stability threshold speed since the rotor vibrates with a subsynchronous component much larger than the one synchronous with rotor speed. Hence, for operating speed above the stability threshold, a nonlinear transient analysis considering nonlinear fluid film force must be performed in order to accurately predict vibration responses of rotor and guarantee results of analysis.

  • Recently, mixers are being widely used in the display and semiconductor company in order to mix the chemical materials. The mixer normally consists of shaft, hub, reduction gear, and driving motor. It is one of the key design factors to evaluate the dynamic characteristics caused by the rotation. In this study, the dynamic characteristics of the high speed mixer, such as vibration, noise and thermal radiation, are verified by the experiment. Through the experiment, it is shown that the structural unbalance mass of high speed mixer is the important source of the severe vibrations and maximum temperature is mixer bowl.

  • The intermittent high vibration has been occurred one or two times a day for a 500MW large steam turbine during 5 months. This abnormal vibration was caused by the rubbing between the rotor and the carbide accumulated on the seal tooth of oil deflector. It was found that the accumulated carbide was insulation material installed on the HIP casing from the examination of the chemical composition. Also, this paper presents the mechanism of the intermittent high vibration and the proper method to eliminate this vibration problem. This result would be good practice to find the solution of similar high vibration in the steam turbines for power plant as well as industrial rotating machineries.
