This paper proposes a practical design for a Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel (CHBM) inverter based on Power Electronics Building Blocks (PEBB) and high performance control to improve current control and increase fault tolerance. It is shown that the expansion and modularization characteristics of the CHBM inverter are improved since the individual inverter modules operate more independently, when using the PEBB concept. It is also shown that the performance of current control can be improved with voltage delay compensation and the fault tolerance can be increased by using unbalance three-phase control. The proposed design and control methods are described in detail and the validity of the proposed system is verified experimentally in various industrial fields.

In this study, we propose a control algorithm to reduce the unbalanced characteristics of a three-phase system power caused by the unbalanced load of the AC electric railway. Then, we verify its performance through the design of a power compensator and experiments applying it. Like electric railway systems, a Scott transformer is applied, and the load and single-phase back-to-back converters are connected to the M-phase and T-phase outputs. The back-to-back converter monitors the difference in active power between the unbalanced loads in real-time and compensates for the power by using bidirectional characteristics. The active power is performed through PI control in the synchronous coordinate system, and DC link overall voltage and voltage balancing control are controlled jointly by M-phase and T-phase converters to improve the responsiveness of the system. To verify the performance of the proposed power compensation device, an experiment was performed under the condition that M-phase 5 kW and T-phase 1 kW unbalanced load. As a result of the experiment, the unbalance rate of the three-phase current after the operation of the power compensator decreases by 58.66% from 65.04% to 6.38%, and the excellent performance of the power compensator proposed in this study is verified.
This paper analyzes the input side performance of a conventional three-phase to single-phase matrix converter (3-1MC). It also presents the input-side waveform quality under this topology. The suppression of low-frequency input current harmonics is studied using the 3-1MC plus capacitance compensation unit. The constraint between the modulation function of the output and compensation sides is analyzed, and the relations among the voltage utilization ratio and the output compensation capacitance, filter capacitors and other system parameters are deduced. For a 3-1MC without large-capacity energy storage, the system performance is susceptible to input voltage imbalance. This paper decouples the inner current of the 3-1MC using a Lyapunov function in the input positive and negative sequence bi-coordinate axes. Meanwhile, the outer loop adopts a voltage-weighted synthesis of the output and compensation sides as a cascade of control objects. Experiments show that this strategy suppresses the low-frequency input current harmonics caused by input voltage imbalance, and ensures that the system maintains good static and dynamic performances under input-unbalanced conditions. At the same time, the parameter selection and debugging methods are simple.

A grid-connected inverter can be used in grid-connected or stand-alone modes. Generally, a grid-connected inverter operates in a grid-connected mode, but the inverter operates in stand-alone mode if grid faults occur. In the stand-alone mode, the grid-connected inverter must supply electric power to a critical load that needs to receive stable power even though grid faults occur. Generally, three-phase loads are used as critical loads, but a single phase is configured in some cases. In these conditions, the critical load is required to unbalance the load power consumption, which makes the three-phase load voltage unbalancd. This unbalanced voltage problem can cause fatal problems to the three-phase critical loads, and thus must be addressed. Hence, this paper proposes an algorithm to solve this unbalanced voltage problem by the individual phase current control. The proposed method is verified using Psim simulation and experiments.
The phase-lock technique is applied to a three-phase semi-bridge type battery charger system. Using an inner fast dynamic loop, the phase-locked voltage control (PLVC) technique of three-phase semi-bridge converter is proposed to give a frequency synchronism and to reduce the subharmonics due to the unbalance of transformer or power line. To protect the power devices, the two stage soft-start, function with softly locking the phase and softly increasing the current is presented. As limiting the reference voltage of the inner voltage control loop, muti-lock phenomena are removed on the PLVC loop. A current limit function is also proposed to limit the current of battery and converter. The proposed controller is confirmed through experiment results.

This paper proposes the control method for compensating for unbalanced grid current and reducing a total harmonic distortion (THD) of the grid current at the three-phase grid-connected inverter systems under unbalancd and distorted grid voltage conditions. The THD of the grid current caused by grid voltage harmonics is derived by considering the phase delay and magnitude attenuation due to the hardware low-pass filter (LPF). The Cauchy-Schwarz inequality theory is used in order to search more easily for a minimum point of THD. Both the gain and angle of a compensation voltage at the minimum point of THD of the grid current are derived. The negative-sequence components in the three-phase unbalanced grid voltage are cancelled in order to achieve the balanced grid current. The simulation and experimental results show the validity of the proposed control methods.

In this paper, the implementation of a three-phase shunt active power filter is presented. The filter is essentially three independent single-phase current-controlled voltage source inverters (CC-VSI) with a common DC bus. The CC- VSI is operated to directly control the AC grid current to be sinusoidal and in phase with the grid voltage without detecting the load currents. The APF consists of a current control loop, which shapes the grid currents to be sinusoidal and a voltage control loop, which regulates the active power balance of the system. The experimental results indicate that the active filter is able to handle predominantly the harmonics, as well as the unbalance and reactive power, so that the grid currents are sinusoidal, in phase with the grid voltages and symmetrical.
The stability of a grid-connected system (GCS) has become a critical issue with the increasing utilization of renewable energy sources. Under grid faults, however, a grid-connected inverter cannot work efficiently by using only the traditional droop control. In addition, the unbalance factor of voltage/current at the common coupling point (PCC) may increase significantly. To ensure the stable operation of a GCS under grid faults, the capability to compensate for grid imbalance should be integrated. To solve the aforementioned problem, an improved voltage-type grid-connected control strategy is proposed in this study. A negative sequence conductance compensation loop based on a positive sequence power droop control is added to maintain PCC voltage balance and reduce grid current imbalance, thereby meeting PCC power quality requirements. Moreover, a stable analysis is presented based on the small signal model. Simulation and experimental results verify the aforementioned expectations, and consequently, the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

This paper proposes a current control scheme of the PWM converters under nonideal source voltage conditions such as unbalance and distortion. For the distorted source voltage, the harmonic current controllers are introduced to the conventional current controller. These control loops can eliminate the 5th and 7th order harmonics which are hardly to be done by using filters. For the unbalanced source voltage, a negative sequence current controller is introduced either to reduce the DC-link voltage ripples or to eliminate the source current unbalance. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed control scheme.
The thermal over-current relay or electronic motor protection relay is mostly used as the open-phase detection device of the three-phase motor or load. When the over-current or overheat of electric line is generated, it detects and operates circuit breaker, but there is the defect that the sensing speed is slow, the operation can be sometimes failed, and the precision is decreased. In order to improve these problems, this paper is proposed a new control circuit topology for open-phase protection using semiconductor devices. Therefore, the proposed open-phase protection device enhances the sensing speed and precision, and has the advantage of simple fitting in the three-phase motor control panel in the field, as it manufactures into small size and light weight.
