아조벤젠을 함유한 장쇄지방산과 폴리 비닐알코올간의 에스테르화 반응에 의한 폴리머의 광이성화 현상에 관한 연구 (Photoisomerization of Polymer by Esterification Reaction between Poly vinyl alcohol and Azobenzene-containing Long Chain Fatty Acids)

  • The Synthesis of azobenzene containing long chain fatty acid and poly vinyl alcohol by esterification reaction($C_{n}-Azo-PVA$) was optimized, starting from P-(P'-hydroxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid and the product of reaction containing azobenzene chromophores was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in toluene solvent at room temperature. In addition, UV absorption spectra of Langmmuir Blodggett (LB) film deposited on quartz plate have been measured and the structure of these compounds were ascertained by means of Ultraviolet and FT-IR. Recrystallization of reaction product in the solvent results the experimental yield obtained about 22.27% P-(P'-octadecyloxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid-poly vinyl alcohol. Long chain azobenzene derivative-poly vinyl alcohols are induced phtoisomerization by u, v, and visible light irradiation. The LB film of azobenzene containing long chain fatty acids($C_{18}-Azo-PVA$) are possible of being applied to functional molecular devices such as photomemory and light switching.

폴리이미드막표면위에 경사진 자외선 조사를 이용한 액정셀에서의 고프리틸트각의 발생 (Generation of High Pretilt Angle in a Cell with Oblique non-polarized UV Light Irradiation on Polyimide Surface)

  • We investigated the generation of high pretilt angle for nematic liquid crystal (NLC) in a cell with obilique non-polarized ultraviolet (UV) light irradiation on mixtured polyimide surface. It was found that the monodomain alignment of NLC is obtained with an angle of incidence of 75∼85 degrees on PI surface. We consider that the monodomain alignment of NLC is attributed to anisotropic dispersion force effect to photo-depolymerization of polymer. We successfully observed that the pretilt angle of NLC is generated above 5 degree with an angle of incidence of 75∼85 degrees. It is considered that the pretilt angle generation NLC is attributed to interaction between the LC molecules and the polymer surfaces.

  • Generally, $TiO_2$ powders absorb ultraviolet rays and make oxidation/reduction reactions on its surface. Hydroxide radical(OH), a product of photocatalyst reactions, has so strong oxidation/reduction electric potential that it can oxidize noxious gas like NOx. In this study, $TiO_2$ was substituted for cement to investigate the purifying degree of NOx. Rutile and anatase types of $TiO_2$ were used as photocatalyst. The sun rays and the ultraviolet were used as a light source. Anatase type $TiO_2$ was better than rutile type in purifying performance. The sunray showed the best purifying performance among the light sources. 3% substitution of TiO$_2$ with the sunray was enough to purify NOx efficiently.

  • The Synthesis of long chain fatty acid containing azobenzene and $(C_{n}-Azo)$ was optimized, starting from p-(p'-hydroxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid and the product of reaction containing azobenzene chromophores was investigated by ultraviolet spectrophotometery in chloroform solvent at the various temperature. In addition, Reversibility and stability of azo compounds have been measured by means of Ultraviolet and the structure of these compound were ascertained by means of FT-IR and NMR. Recrystallization of reaction product in the solvent results the experimental yield obtained about 62.93% p-(p'-octadecyloxy phenyl azo)-benzoic acid. Long chain azobenzene derivatives in chloroform solution are induced photoisomerization by u. v. and visible light irradiation. The solution of long chain fatty acids$(C_{n}-Azo)$ containing azobenzene are possible of being applied to functional molecular devices such as photomemory and light switching.

  • Ultraviolet light(UV-C, wavelength: 200~280nm) is employed profitably for sterilizing drinking water. For most water serving apparatus such as a water purifier, a water cooler and heater, a coffee vending machine and etc., pre-sterilized water may be contaminated secondarily with bacillary inhabitation in a container before serving. In consideration of this problem, a household water tap which is equipped with a sterilization/Purification device in combination with non-contact UV-lamp, was designed to sterilize and purify water at the last outlet just before serving. Hopefully this simple but creative item may be commercialized for household and public use.

Wide bandgap III-nitride semiconductors: opportunities for future optoelectronics

  • The world at the end of the $20^{th}$ Century has become "blue" Indeed, this past decade has witnessed a "blue rush" towards the development of violet-blue-green light emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs) based on wide bandgap III-Nitride semiconductors. And the hard work has culminated with, first, the demonstration of commercial high brightness blue and green LEDs and of commercial violet LDs, at the very end of this decade. Thanks to their extraordinary properties, these semiconductor materials have generated a plethora of activity in semiconductor science and technology. Novel approaches are explored daily to improve the current optoelectronics state-of-the-art. Such improvements will extend the usage and the efficiency of new light sources (e.g. white LEDs), support the rising information technology age (e.g. high density optical data storage), and enhance the environmental awareness capabilities of humans (ultraviolet and visible photon detectors and sensors). Such opportunities and many others will be reviewed in this presentation.

  • The photocatalytic degradation of Endocrine Discruptors, dibuthyl phthalate(DBP) has been investigated over TiO$_2$ photocatalysts irradiated with a ultraviolet (UV) light. The effect of operational parameters, i.e., reaction time, light intensity, pH and additive on the degradation rate of aqueous solution of Endocrine Discruptors has been examined. Results show that the employment of efficient photocatalysts and the selection of optimal operational parameters may lead to degradation of Endocrine Discruptors solutions.

  • Azotobacter is isolated from soil and its purified species is identified as A. chroococcum. The survival rate of Azotobacter irradiated with UV light is measured, and the reproductive rates of the survivals are calculated. In general, not only the survival rate, but also the length of the generation time of the survival progeny is inversely proportional to the irradiated dose of UV light. The reproduvtive rate of Azotobacter is increased with the exogeneous treatment of nucleic acid derivatives.
