Analysis of Ozone Concentration by TD and Q-mass Method

  • In order to get oxidizing power enough for growth of a superconductive thin film with oxide gas, concentrated ozone was used. As a method for concentrating ozone, a method for concentrating ozone by adsorbing ozone selectively into silica-gel beads is adopted, and this concentration is analyzed by the ultraviolet absorption method, the thermal decomposition method and the Q-mass analyzing method. Thermal decomposition method is most effective for measurement of a high concentration of ozone. Ozone as concentrated by the adsorption method got to have a concentration of 97 mol % at the maximum, and it was identified that the concentration of the ozone gas was stable for the time while a thin film was formed.

  • Titanium dioxide films were prepared by RF sputtering method on glass for various oxygen partial pressures at power 270 W. The crystal structure, photocatalytic property and the hydrophilicity of $TiO_2$thin film the deposition conditions were investigated. Crystallized anatase phase was observed in $TiO_2$film deposited at the ratio of oxygen partial pressure 10% and 20% for 2 hrs. As the increase of deposition time, the grain size and void size of $TiO_2$film have increased and also $V_2$films have been good crystallinity. The ultraviolet-visible light absorption of $TiO_2$films was increased with increasing of deposition time and occured chiefly at the wavelength between 280 and 340 nm. The absorption band was shifted to a longer wave length as deposition time increased. Water contact angle on the X$TiO_2$film of anatase structure was decreased with increasing ultraviolet illumination time and became lower than $11^{\circ}$ from $83^{\circ}$. When hydrophilic $TiO_2$film changed by enough ultraviolet illumination was stored in the dark, the film surface gradually turned to hydrophobic state.

  • The sulfuric acid sulfonation mixtures of 2-aminonaphthalene, contained 2-aminonaphthalene, Dahl's acid, Broenner's acid, amino-F-acid and Baden acid, can be determined quantitatively by multicomponent spectrophotometric analysis. The analysis was performed in diluted sodium hydroxide aqueous solution and based on the ultraviolet absorption of the sodium salts of each isomers. The determination of quantity of each isomers was performed by subjection the absorbances of the unknown mixture and of its constituents, gathered at a large number of wavelengths, to a least square treatment by an electronic personer computer. This method provided a rapid analysis of such complex mixture, and the standard deviation was ${\pm}1.65$ mole %.

  • The photocatalytic performance of $TiO_2$ thin films coated on porous alumina balls using various aqueous $TiOCl_2$ solutions as starting precursors, to which 1.0 $mol\%$ transition metal ($Ni^{2+},\;Cr^{3+},\;Fe^{3+},\;Nb^{3+},\;and\;V^{5+}$) chlorides had been already added, has been investigated, together with characterizations for $TiO_2$ sols synthesized simultaneously in the same autoclave through hydrothermal method. The synthesized $TiO_2$ sols were all formed with an anatase phase, and their particle size was between several nm and 30 nm showing ${\zeta}-potential$ of $-25{\sim}-35$ mV, being maintained stable for over 6 months. However, the $TiO_2$ sol added with Cr had a much lower value of -potential and larger particle sizes. The coated $TiO_2$ thin films had almost the same shape and size as those of the sol. The pure $TiO_2$ sol showed the highest optical absorption in the ultraviolet light region, and other $TiO_2$ sols containing $Cr^{3+},\;Fe^{3+}\;and\;Ni^{2+}$ showed higher optical absorption than pure sol in the visible light region. According to the experiments for removal of a gas-phase benzene, the pure $TiO_2$ film showed the highest photo dissociation rate in the ultraviolet light region, but in artificial sunlight the photo dissociation rate of $TiO_2$ coated films containing $Cr^{3+},\;Fe^{3+}\;and\;Ni^{2+}$ was measured higher together with the increase of optical absorption by doping.

  • A rapid and simple method for detecting colors was attempted on the basis of absorption and emission spectra of reflected light at $45^{\circ}$ angle from color-adsorbed filter paper illuminated by ultraviolet light through interference filter. Absorption spectra of prepared samples revealed more characteristic patterns than emission spectra. Detection of colors was readily accomplished by the investigation of wave length range, distribution pattern, the number of absorption bands and the degree of quenching.

  • A method to improve the photocatalytic activity of titanium dioxide by modification with a sensitizer and a metal oxide is proposed. To achieve this goal, we used metal oxides as dopants. In particular, $CaWO_4$ and $Gd_2O_2S$:Tb were used because their 2.6 eV and 2.2 eV band gap energy and optical properties have a large positive effect on photocatalysis. The improvement in the photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ modified with $Gd_2O_2S$:Tb under ultraviolet light irradiation is described in a previous study. The present work focuses on the sensitization of metal oxide-modified $TiO_2$. Having observed the ultraviolet-visible absorption spectra of 3,4,9,10-Perylenetetracarboxylic diimide in the wide visible-light region from 400 nm to 650 nm and the broad peaks in its photoluminescence spectra at 695 nm and 717 nm, we decided to use this perylene dye to sensitize modified $TiO_2$ to enhance its activity as a visible-light harvesting photocatalyst. We also explored the positive effects thin-film surface changes stemming from ultraviolet pre-treatment have on photocatalytic activity. Finally, we subjected several metal oxide-modified $TiO_2$ products sensitized by the perylene dye to ultraviolet pre-treatment, obtaining the most active photocatalysts.

Enhancement of Photoluminescence by Ag Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance for Ultraviolet Detection

  • For higher sensitivity in ultraviolet (UV) and even vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) detection of silicon-based sensors, a sandwich-structured film sensor based on Ag Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance (LSPR) was designed and fabricated. This film sensor was composed of a Ag nanoparticles (NPs) layer, SiO2 buffer and fluorescence layer by physical vapour deposition and thermal annealing. By tuning the annealing temperature and adding the SiO2 layer, the resonance absorption wavelength of Ag NPs matched with the emission wavelength of the fluorescence layer. Due to the strong plasmon resonance coupling and electromagnetic field formed on the surface of Ag NPs, the radiative recombination rate of the luminescent materials and the number of fluorescent molecules in the excited state increased. Therefore, the fluorescent emission intensity of the sandwich-structured film sensor was 1.10-1.58 times at 120-200 nm and 2.17-2.93 times at 240-360 nm that of the single-layer film sensor. A feasible method is provided for improving the detection performance of UV and VUV detectors.

  • Ozone is usually generated from oxygen gas using a silent discharge apparatus and its concentration is less then 10 mol%. An ozone condensation system is constructed for metal oxide thin film fabrication. Ozone is condensed by the adsorption method, which is widely used for the growth of oxidation thin films such as superconductor. Highly condensed ozone is analyzed by three methods; ultraviolet absorption, thermal decomposition and Q-mass analyzing methods. Thermal decomposition method is most effective in the highly condensed ozone region and its method is superior to Q-mass analyzer for determining ozone concentration because of the simplicity of the method.
