  • The hydroxyl radical (·OH) and superoxide anion radical (·O2- ) generated by the shock wave generated during ultrasonic cavitation collapse in TiO2 suspension are highly useful because they can sterilize and disinfect. For practical use as a sterilization method without any chemicals, in this study, we proposed a method for evaluating the generation of radicals generated by high-intensity ultrasound emitted to titanium dioxide suspension. In the proposed method, the sonoluminescence phenomenon, which emits light by ultrasonic cavitation decay energy, was utilized, and the degree of radical generation was evaluated through the amount of light energy by sonoluminescence. As a result, even at a low concentration of titanium dioxide of 0.02 wt%, light energy 5 times higher than in the absence of titanium dioxide was received. After that, as the concentration increased by 0.1 wt%, the luminous intensity of sonoluminescence increased linearly by about 14.8 × 10-12 lm. Therefore, it was confirmed that the radicals generated by radiating high-intensity ultrasound to the titanium dioxide suspension increased linearly as the concentration of titanium dioxide increased within a given concentration range.

  • Purpsoe: To investigate the diagnostic value of quantitative analysis of a tissue diffusion and virtual touch tissue imaging quantification (VTIQ) technique with acoustic radiation force impulse (ARFI) elastography for assessing enlarged cervical lymph nodes. Materials and Methods: Fifty-six enlarged cervical lymph nodes confirmed by pathologic diagnoses were covered in the study. According to the results of pathologic diagnosis, patients were classified into benign and malignant groups. All the patients were examined by both conventional ultrasonography and elastography. AREA% and shear wave velocity (SWV) in ROI of different groups were calculated and compared using ROC curves. Cut-off points of AREA% and SWV were determined with receiver operating characteristic curves. Results: Final histopathological results revealed 21 cases of benign and 35 cases of malignant lymph nodes. The mean values of AREA% and SWV in benign and malignant groups were $45.0{\pm}17.9%$ and $2.32{\pm}0.57m/s$, and $61.3{\pm}21.29%$ and $4.36{\pm}1.25$)m/s, respectively. For the parameters of elastography, "AREA%" and SWV demonstrated significant differences between groups (p=0.002). AREA% was positively correlated with SWV with a correlation coefficient of 0.809 (P<0.001). Conclusions: Stiffness of different lymph node diseases in patients may differ. Elastography can evaluate changes sensitively and provide valuable information to doctors. The study proved that the VTIQ elastography technique can play an important role in differential diagnosis of lymph nodes.

  • New concept of fine dust measurement method is suggested based on ultrasonic scattering. These days, fine dust has been social problem in Korea, and many researches has been conducted including the area structural maintenance. Conventional measurement system such as optical scattering and semiconductor has a limit from environmental factors like relative humidity. However, ultrasound is based on mechanical waves, which perturb mechanical properties of medium such as density and elastic constants. Using the advantage, the algorithm for fine dust measurement is derived and evaluated using 2-D finite difference method. The numerical analysis simulates ultrasonic wave propagation inside multiple scattering medium like fine dust in air. Signal processing scheme is also suggested and the results show that the error of the algorithm is around minimum of 0.7 and maximum of 24.9 in the number density unit. It is shown that cross-section of fine dust is a key parameter to improve the accuracy of algorithm.

  • Ultrasonic backward radiation profile is frequency-dependent when the incident region has deptional gradient of acoustical properties or multi-layers. Until now, we have measured the profiles of principal frequencies of an used transducers so that it was not easy to characterize the frequency dependence of the SAW(surface acoustic wave) from the backward radiation profile. We tried to measure the spectral backward radiation profiles using DFP(digital filer package) in a Lecroy DSO(digital storage oscilloscope). The measured spectral profiles showed that the steel specimen of #1200 surface treatment have 2% SAW velocity dispersion of the loaded case and the severly rusty steel specimen have the very big changes in the shape and pattern of the spectral profile. It is concluded that the spectral backward radiation profiles could be very effective tool to evaluate the frequency dependence of surface area.

  • In this paper, we proposed an emulsification method without using an emulsifier and investigated the effects of particle size distribution in fluids on dispersion stability. Surfactant-free oil in water emulsion was prepared with 1 % (w/w) of olive oil by using high speed agitation, high pressure and ultrasonic dispersion methods. The particle size, microscopic observation, and dispersion stability of each sample were evaluated and dispersion stability according to various dispersion methods was compared. As a result, the emulsion dispersed by the ultrasonic dispersion method showed the smallest particle size and uniform distribution of $0.07{\sim} 0.3{\mu}m$ and was the most stable in a 7 days stability evaluation. In the above experiment, four olive oil emulsions having different particle sizes were prepared using ultrasonic dispersion technology that was capable of producing stable emulsions. The dispersion stability of each samples with oil droplet sizes of (A) 0.1 to $0.5{\mu}m$, (B) 0.3 to $4{\mu}m$, (C) 1 to $10.5{\mu}m$ and (D) 2 to $120{\mu}m$, was observed for 7 days, and the relationship between the stability and performance was studied. Emulsion (A) with particle size less than $0.5{\mu}m$ displayed the dispersion stability showing below 5 % change in a 7 days stability evaluation. In the case of (B), (C), and (D) that had larger particle than $0.5{\mu}m$, the changes of dispersion stability were 10 %, 13 % and 35 % respectively. From these results, it was proved that dispersion stability of emulsion with uniform particle size of $0.5{\mu}m$ or less was confirmed to be very stable.

  • In this study, ibuprofen(IBP) degradation by the photochemical ($UV/S_2O{_8}^{2-}$) and sonochemical ($US/S_2O{_8}^{2-}$) processes was examined under various parameters, such as UV ($10{\sim}40{\pm}5W/L$) and US ($50{\sim}90{\pm}5W/L$) power density, optimum dosage of persulfate ion ($S_2O{_8}^{2-}$), temperature ($20{\sim}60^{\circ}C$) and anions effect ($Cl^-$, $HCO_3{^-}$, $CO{_3}^{2-}$). The pseudo-first-order degradation rate constants were in the order of $10^{-1}$ to $10^{-5}min^{-1}$ depending on each processes. The synergistic effect of IBP degradation in $UV/S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ and $US/S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ processes could investigated, due to the generation of $SO_4{^-}$ radical. This result can confirm from the produced $H_2O_2$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ concentration in each processes. IBP degradation rate affected by the $S_2O{_8}^{2-}$ dosage, temperature, power and anion existence parameters. In particular, IBP degradation rate increased with the increase of the temperature ($60^{\circ}C$) and applied power density (UV:$40{\pm}5W/L$, US:$90{\pm}5W/L$). On the other hand, anions effect on the IBP degradation was negative, due to the anion play as a the scavenger of radical.

  • The results of crack evaluation by conventional UT(Ultrasonic Test)is highly depend on the inspector's experience or knowledge of ultrasound. Phased array UT system and its application methods for small crack length evaluation will be a good alternative method which overcome present UT weakness. This study was aimed at checking the accuracy of crack length evaluation method by electronic scanning and discuss about characteristics of electronic scanning for crack length evaluation. Especially ultrasonic phased array with electronic scan technique was used in carrying out both sizing and detect ability of crack as its length changes. The response of ultrasonic phased array was analyzed to obtain the special method of determining crack length without moving the transducer and detect-ability of crack minimal length and depth from the material. A method of crack length determining by electronic scanning for the small crack is very real method which has it's accuracy and verify the effectiveness of method compared to a conventional crack length determination.

  • The renewed interest in the use of hyperthermia in cancer therapy is bases on radiobiological and clinical evidence indicated that there may be a significant therapeutic advantage with the use of heat alone or combined with radiation or chemotherapy, There are many methods for generating heat for localized tumor as like radiofrequency, microwave, electromagnetic induction and ultrasound. But it is very difficult to be even thermal dose distribution and stable output of power and then the detection of temperature in tumor is difficult to be precise with thermocouples and semiconductor sensors. We designed the microwave heating generator, dipole antenna applicators and autometic temperature controlled thermocouples for localized hyperthermia on skin and in cavities. 1. The microwave generator with 120 W, 2,450MHz magnetron could be heating up to $40^{\circ}C\~50^{\circ}C\;for\;1\~2$ hours in living tissues. 2. The thermal dose distribution in tissue with microwave was described $42^{\circ}C\~44^{\circ}C$ with in 3 cm depth and $2\~6cm$ diameter area. 3. Skin surface heating applicator with spiral 3 times wave length antenna radiated high Power of microwave. 4, Intracavitary heating applicator with dipole antenna with autometic control temperature sensor kept up continuously constant temperature in tissue. 5. For constant thermal distribution, applied two steps power with 10W microwave after $17\~20W$ during first 10 minutes. 6. The cooling rate by blood flew in living tissue was rised as $10\%$ then meats.
